How many badges are there?

Ok I know this probably seems like a dumb question, however, just how many badges are there in game?

What are some good websites for badge information?

According to the City Info Tracker website there are approx 1461 badges. I'm not sure how many badges any one toon can earn, but I don't believe it's all 1461. The badge leader board there (of people who've signed up, not every player in game) shows the top badger with 1399 badges.

You can see how they're broken down by type here: http://cit.cohtitan.com/badges/

And more badge information through the Paragonwiki site here: http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Badges

In the interest of equal time: www.badge-hunter.com.

Check Badge-Hunter also for the Vidiots map pack, which overlays your in-game maps with all sorts of useful information, including badge locations.

That leader, Bimble, is just one short: Bug Hunter, which is awarded by the Devs for reporting very significant exploits (privately and without exploiting it yourself). So, 1400 is the maximum anyone can have right now without a bug in play giving them more than they would be able to normally get.

The other several dozen badges Bimble doesn't have are the Praetorian version of the badges. Most of them are just alternate versions of the badges you can get from not starting as a Praetorian (e.g., the damage received badges). There are just a few unique Praetorian badges which only a Praetorian can get and have no CoH/V analogue. However, if you created a Praetorian, then you'd miss out on the date-sensitive badges for events (logging in a toon on an Anniversary event, e.g.) or for the yearly subscription badges. All this to say that a Praetorian based toon will always be behind a CoH based toon in badge gathering. Which leads to the point: 1400 is the max.

Until I24 comes out with a dozen or two more badges.

Ok so 1400 is the max....does that include or exclude the veteran rewards?

Which is actually a point of contention now that the Devs have haphazardly decided to let the annual vet badges go unsupported. This means that people like Bimble who were lucky enough to get his 8th anniversary vet badge are probably going to remain one of the lucky few to ever get that badge. Most people since CoH:Freedom went live have not gotten their latest anniversary vet badge (my 8th for example was due in April) because the Devs somehow lost the ability to reliably award those badges to the vast majority of players.

Bottomline it's going to be a bit more confusing to determine "the total number of badges any one character can have" because now there are some people who are quite randomly going to have more possible badges than others.

The current theoretical maximum is actually 1403 by my count, due to three badges that can only be acquired by a Praetorian:

-Moral High Ground
-Resistance Member
-Loyalist

Edit: This is actually not true since GR was released in August 2010, so Praetorian characters would be missing at least 6 badges (5 anniversary and 1 loyalty). Maximum is indeed 1400.

You can actually raise that maximum by 8 by exploiting X Times the Victor. Doing so is lame, however. They also won't be counted by any badge hunting websites so your verified count would remain the same.

I've listed the "unobtainable" badges below for reference. This includes ones like Bug Hunter and Passport, as well as anniversary, loyalty, and event badges that once missed can never be earned.

-8 Veteran
-8 Anniversary
-Vigilant
-The Constant
-Tempered Through Fire
-Defender of Primal Earth
-Doorbuster
-A Nemesis Plot
-Passport
-Bug Hunter
-V.I.P. (you need to buy the Collector's Edition for this)

That's 25 altogether. So depending on when you started playing/collecting that's the margin (add 3 if you start Primal).

I had an idea...

When 'fixing' the Anniversary badges, make the new one replace the old. This way, the badge still accurately states how many years you've subbed, but there's only one badge doing so.

I actually suggested something like this myself several years ago. The idea was that the total number of badges would not vary among people whether you've played for 8+ years or only one and thus be a little more fair to all players interested in badging. They could have even come up with a "zero year newbie badge" so basically everyone would have that one badge as a placeholder regardless of overall vet time.

Not exactly sure if I thought of this idea first, but even if I didn't this shows that the suggestion is valid amongst multiple players. I realize that this will likely never happen now, but it's the kind of idea that should have been accounted for back when badges were first being developed.
