Katana/DA

Hello all. I don't normally post on the forums. But I felt that my best option is to ask the helpful community. I have a Katana/DA scrapper I been using since issue 4. I have had alot of ups and downs with it. I watch as other scrappers do a lot better in everything from DPS to surviving onslaughts of enemies. So I was treading the forums looking for a awesome build but was finding builds based on a budget. So I am asking if anyone got a build out there where budget isn't a issue. I try making builds but I feel like it could be better. and i seen how good people can get. Not to mention there are a lot of post saying DA is awesome. So if anyone could come up with a awesome build for this set it would really be appreciated.

Are you more interested in a max dps build or a max survivability build? Somewhere in between? And, while I'm sure Dechs means to be helpful, I think kat/da leans more towards building toward positional defense, while his builds lean towards typed defenses. His general advice for DA is good, though, if you're not sure where to start.

The high-end scrapper kat/da conversations are a bit out of date, sadly. It's a combo that hasn't been discussed in-depth post ATO's and hami-o 'fix'.

Finally, some of those 'budget' kat/da builds have been pretty good. Grab one you like, improve it as you're able, and submit it for discussion. Let's see where it goes.

edit to add:
Question for Planet J: is that thing manageable on just the alpha slot, or do you lean on destiny for endurance?
edit 2 to add:
I guess I should define manageable. Do you find yourself popping blues in PvE team play? How many blue insps to drop a pylon? How many for a run-of-the-mill even-con av? (rough estimates are fine with me.) Are you running ageless? (which seems like a viable solution...) or something else?
edit 3:
d'oh. mids was running sprint... looks more reasonable with that turned off, hehe

Might take some searching but one of Werner's scrappers is a Katana/DA named, as I recall, Alexi (not sure the spelling is correct) and quite capable of Silly Scrapper Tricks.

I run barrier t4 core as needed...no ageless.

I only need blues when I get into long protracted fight or S/L farming with large mobs.

AV battles/pylons take some blues occasionally but not anything more than average builds. Plus I have some accolades and that helps some with endurance.

-E- Werner's build uses lots of now defunct Hami-Os and BotZ sets, I've compared notes...his build would have to be reworked for i22. I actually sent him a copy of my build for him to glance over, and haven't heard back from him...but I am sure he is playing with it...He also used hover instead of combat jumping...

The BotZ sets still work, they just don't give as much enhancement as they used to. My BS/DA still runs 2 full sets, since I need the KB protection anyway it was worth it to me.

Claws: I was mainly talking about the Hami-Os...I know BotZ still works...

Dragon: Your current Katana build is more of a glass cannon build...you are hardly utilizing the strengths of the set...like Divine Avalanche boosting Melee Def and trying to go positional...that's why your survivability is lower. I would have liked to be able to work in a few purple damage sets, or even the brute set in my build...but I couldn't make it work and still get the survivability I was looking for...

I've been playing my Katana/Dark Scrapper and leveling a Super Strength/Fire Brute. But I haven't been much on the forum, haven't crunched numbers or fiddled with builds in months (didn't even play for about three months), and don't even have the current Mids'. I'm personally below 40% defense after the Enzyme fix. I'm sure I'll work something out some day, but right now, I'm just enjoying the newer soloable content and not worrying about being uber. So yeah, sorry, I won't be much help at the moment.

Eh, just in case it's still somehow helpful, the latest build I fiddled with was for a Katana/Dark Brute. But it's leaning heavily on Enzymes, so it needs some major tweaking. Also, it looks like I was going for the Divine Avalanche -> Gambler's Cut -> Sting of the Wasp -> Gambler's Cut chain. I kind of like that chain, and I assume I did that to fit some things in, but you'll do more damage with a more standard chain, and most people want their knock ups/downs.

Well, it probably needs a lot of polishing, and I think I'm going to wait for I23 before comitting to anything, but below is the sort of build I'd consider for I22.

Comments:

  • Other than removing Enzymes and adding the Scrapper ATO, the big change was to trade defense for recharge. For incarnate content, the "soft cap" isn't, and improving recharge on Dark Regeneration seems important - once I use it, I typically want it again pretty quickly. It's also the right move for on-paper survivability calculations.
  • While I'm playing pretty much nothing but incarnate content right now, I'd still like to get my ranged defense up to 40% so I'm at the normal soft cap with the tail end of Barrier.
  • I kept heal enhancement on Dark Regeneration for those times I want to heal but only one enemy is in range.
  • Endurance should be more than sustainable in actual use, but I've not carefully calculated to account for the changes from my current build.
  • I'm switching to a lower DPS no knockup/down attack chain here. Most people won't like that, but I've used that chain before and liked it.
  • Easy to switch Hover/Fly for Combat Jumping/Super Jump if desired.
  • 4% more smashing/lethal resistance, now 64% - woot!
  • 14 points knockback protection. It's not critical, but I'm not satisfied with my current 11 points. 12 would be fine, but 14 is what happened.
  • Soul Transfer. I've never, ever taken a rez, but what the heck. It fit. If all else fails, I might as well make them regret killing me.
