Tribute to CoH/CoX
I want to possible make one of those obnoxious comments about not having any doom while simultaniously nodding to the fact that I hate doom posts.
But isntead I'll try a rather arrogant commentary on that fact, as I just did, and then say, Yes its a fun game, and in general, the Devs are top notch in my book too!
Since all I played before this was Guild Wars where there was very little developer-community interaction, the nearest we got was a comunity rep sent to lurk the popular fan forums, its very nice the levels of communication we get on whats going on, and although the Beast Pack is about as high in my list of priorities as -something that would normally be low on a list of priorities- its nice that even a fringe area of enjoyment is being included because there was enough feedback for it.

Positron's i13 letter: We are trying to make PvP more accessible to new players, while giving experienced PvP'ers the advantage that comes with formulating tactics around the new systems we're putting in place. PvP from now on will be on our priority list. If something isn't working out, we'll be in there tweaking it and making it work, for the entire future of the product, not just Issue 13.
Asha'man,
First, I would like to say: nice name! I'm also a Robert Jordan fan I'm looking forward to the day that the devs release a quarterstaff set so I can make a Mat Cauthon tribute character! Boy that's gonna be a great guy to play. I'll probably call him "Son of Battles" or maybe just "Toy" or I'll go with "Carai an Caldazar" if it's not too many characters.
Also, I couldn't agree more. I've played since about when Kheldians were released and even though I've left once or twice I always come back because of how much the devs add in every issue! Every character gets to be completely different, a shield scrapper and a willpower scrapper will both be able to solo content and will both be fairly sturdy characters but they'll feel completely different while you play them!
And I gotta say, the incarnate system has me almost crying with joy. I used to never want to dust off my 50s because there didn't seem any point since I couldn't gain any more levels. But now I gladly hop on my scrapper a couple times a week just so I can get on a TF and earn some shards so I'll be ready for the justice slot!
I would also like to echo what Asha'man has said but for a different reason.
I am a self confessed computer game nerd! Before I bought CoX I would spend a good portion of my wages on various new releases and the next must have computer games. Although at the time I thought nothing of it, it would actually be quite a large sum of money each month.
That was until I purchased CoX. It was my first MMO and I was hooked from day one.
I am now a five year veteran and during that time I can count on one hand how many other games I have bought.
So I too would like to thank the Devs for a great game. Not because of the content (which I love), not because of the powersets and designs (which are limitless) and not because of the community (which is awesome) but because I reckon over the past five years the Devs have probably saved me thousands!

@Ice_Storm, I must admit that I haven't read the last couple of books. I trudged through a book or two where nothing seemingly happened, in 1000+ pages... But I'm planning on picking it up again.
Some time back I made a toon with the name Mandragoran. Unfortunately his build didn't click with me so he stalled in the low teens. But I haven't deleted him because of the name.
To the OP:
But, what about our level-pacted Demon Summoning/Dark and Demon Summoning/Poison juggernaut duo?
I have to agree with the up front customization. I spent a day downloading a competing MMO just to try it out because I heard how the game play was so much better. I regretted it completely. NOTHING compares to CoX's costume creator. Nothing compares to the diversity in powersets even for a level 2 character in CoX. Playing a game where random drops to fill out your costume, defense attributes, and self buffs is beyond description. Even CoX's invention origin sets are head and shoulders above the rest, when a permadom can slot for recharge in the same power another might slot for more damage, stun, or endurance reduction.
There was a big backlash to Architect Entertainment. I still go there on occasion to play for tickets for the absurdly prices common salvage and find a MARVELOUS world of content that isn't close to being impossible to complete or merely an experience farm. I would challenge each player to build an AE arc just to get the experience of what it is like to team next to your own hero controlled by admittedly poor AI. (MY AE clone of my FF/psy blast defender is way too enamored with detention field.)
This game is far from dead. I do find it extremely discouraging i cannot find Going Rogue in the local Wal-mart. For myself, I MISS having the big Coke and Nike ads in the regular city zones. It added realism for me.
Here's to the Next 81 months of CoX.

HelinCarnate:OMG it is so terrible. I have the option to take 3 more powers but no additional slots. Boo F'ing hoo.
Among all of the different suggestions I decided to roll up an Ill/TA controller and got him up to lvl 35 (thanks Local Man). I had just gotten Oil Slick Arrow when altitis hit again and I went on my merry way with another toon. A couple of days ago I dusted him off and wow, just wow... He shot up from lvl 35 to his current lvl 41 in a hurry. He's freaking awesome.

Sadly, my Ill/TA is on my secondary server, not my main one. (I have my main Ill/Rad and an Ill/Cold on my main server.) Still, he has been the first one I have pulled out on that server to get the new Incarnate shineys when my other buddies were not in game. I still prefer my Ill/Rad and Ill/Cold over Ill/TA . . . but Ill/TA is a great set. While TA may not be the best secondary for Illusion, I still feel that Illusion may be the best primary for Trick Arrow.
And, yeah, I appreciate the great work the Devs do. This is my first MMO. I have tried a couple of others but stay here. Great concept, great content, great community.
And I have saved a lot of money, too. I go to far fewer movies than I used to. We cut back on Cable premium channels. Most of my limited entertainment dollars go to CoH and Netflix.
LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

My chief complaint with City of X is the fact they went and made so many fun combinations of ATs and powersets to try out.
I'm becoming Steelclaw-ish in the way I play, I can't manage to stick with one character more than a few days and in the last few weeks I'm playing a different character every night (yay for Patrol XP coupled with the ease of getting a random PuG in this game).
Two movies at the theatre per month would put me at $15. (Ten 20 oz sodas from the vending machine or god worse, the convenience store.) The fact that veteran players have only paid for CoH Issue 0, CoV, and Going Rogue is quite a statement. If you came in long enough after City of Villains release, you got the first two for one price as it is. I know this isn't like other games, but would people pay $15 per month and pay for Issue 17, Issue 18, Issue 19, etc?

@Psylenz, yes yes yes...I have to devote time to our level-pacted MMs. But my other toons will suffer from it. Decisions, decisions... :-)
@Local_Man, you convinced me to pair up Ill with TA. I've taken such a liking to him that I am devoting many hours and fake money to try and pimp him out with as much recharge as I can. I know I will not accomplish perma-PA. My attention span and willingness to devote oodles and oodles of influence into a build does not match the requirements of a purp'ed out build. On a related note, I apparently didn't read your guide closely enough because I purchased 5 Malaise IOs...including the Psi damage proc. D'OH! I learned quickly that the dmg causes aggro. I, in all my brilliance, decided to try to deceive a Rikti boss, which required 2 applications of confuse. And it procced on the first application. :-)
@Ice_Storm, I too am loving the incarnate system and the WSTs. In 6 yrs I ran a total of 1 TF (speed KTF runs). Because of my limited play time it was impractical for me to wait for a TF team to build and then devote another 2 hrs to the TF itself. I couldn't risk jumping on a TF and having to log out mid way. Since the incarnate system was release I've led or participated in 2 LGTF, 1 STF, 1 Khan and about half a dozen ITFs. All of them successful. I'm loving it.

Couldn't agree more with this point. Some people complain about the monthly fee. I consider it a bargain. It's kept me from buying any new shinies for a long time now. And at $60 a pop nowadays, that adds up quick.

The last two books that he wrote are just jam packed full of action. It's nice to see that the large amounts of boring reading were worth it cause they led into some truly spectacular stuff in the most recent stuff. It's like the series went back to it's roots and mimicked the fast pace, high action, and high story content that the earlier ones had.
My name is Asha'man and I'm an irreparable altoholic. And proud of it. Nice to meet you.
In the process of creating yet another thread of how great the xx/xx powerset is and how much fun I'm having with it (it was going to be regarding my Ill/TA troller), I thought of how many of these threads I've posted in the past and of all the time I've spent reading powerset guides and perusing the never ending build threads. And it hit me, City of Heroes is an amazing game. It has kept my gaming attention since right after beta, when I first laid eyes on all these majestic heroes flying and zooming past the Atlas statue. It really is a wonder that after all these years 1. I haven't come close to playing every powerset available, 2. I haven't played through all the content that CoX has to offer (and probably never will since the content just keeps coming).
I have servers full of different powerset combinations at all different levels. I never duplicate a build I've played already. About a year ago, if you search my posting history, I created the "What's YOUR favorite Archer?" thread. But guess what? So are most of my other toons. My SD/SS tank is my incarnate and a powerhouse. My latest project, DA/IM tank is fun as well and shamefully I parked him for a little while after getting Frozen Aura. I have seen a trend where I set a goal, i.e. OSA and Frozen Aura, and once I hit it I feel like it's time to play something else. And off I go with another toon. I'm sure once I revisit my DA/IM tank I'll be just as excited about the AoE carnage my once anemic /IM tank can bring.
My Plant/Storm controller was once my favorite toon bar none. I'm thinking of revisiting him and unlocking the Cardiac Alpha slot since he could run through an end bar in no time flat. He will definitely be a beast with the alpha unlocked.
I loved my namesake Fire/nrg blaster. My SS/WP brute, and all my other 50s and high end toons.
So looking back at all the fun I've had over the years, I just want to say Thank You to all the Devs, past and present, that have contributed to making CoX what it is today. The game has changed dramatically over the years, and will continue to change, but I trust the Devs to make the right choices and continue to improve an already incredible game.
I was tempted to try out those "other hero MMOs" but that would mean playing less City of...and we can't have that, can we?
P.S. I would say Happy Valentine's Day to my beloved CoX...but that just sounds...umm...what's the word I'm looking for? :-)
