Looking for potential improvements in Katana/Willpower Softcap+ Build
I have no idea how this will play, or if it's even decent and doing much of anything other than soaking up damage and going "Nyah, nyah! Can't hit me!"
I've heard that Katana is supposed to be somewhat decent damagewise and that Willpower is very survivable, made incredibly so with the softcap. |
Change the Eradication - Damage in Golden Dragonfly to Eradication - Damage/Recharge, the Damage hardly does anything.
I don't think it's realistic to keep hover as a defensive toggle. Hover is very slow, especially if you can't slot much for flight speed. When fighting as a scrapper you want to be able to react very fast, hover will not let you do this and you will have to start it up at the beginning of every fight since you are travelling with SJ/CJ. What I do is I make use of CJ: target - jump - kill - target - jump - kill. CJ is your fastest way of in combat travel and it will let you leep any obstacles in your way without even thinking about them.
You might also want to consider going for Body Mastery with Focused Accuracy and Physical Perfection (if you get rid of Hover) instead of Char, for the tohit debuff resistance for whenever you encounter tohit debuffers (and some recovery and regen). Not sure you can get the lost def back somewhere else though.
Not being exactly at the def soft cap should not be too much of a problem. Some 0.5% are not going to make or break this character. You are already sacrificing quite some regen/damage(in the sense of recharge and attack chain) to get where your defense is right now. Defense is great and it will let you survive many things that you will not be able to survive without but WP has hardly any defense debuff resistance. One debuff going through and you will start crumbling and need to start relying heavily on your inherent WP powers again (s/l res and regen), some 0.5% defense will not protect you from this (another 5 or 10% will delay it, but that's simply not possible). You also have to be aware that you have big holes in smashing and psionic ranged and ae.
From my Kat/WP experience I can tell you that you will stand longer than most anyone, your team may wipe, hosp and come back while you continue fighting with full hp and 2 groups wailing on you. But there are weaknesses and some (few) mobs will break you very easily.
I don't really build with anything resembling an optimum attack chain in mind. I just fire off what's up depending on the situation.
Problem with losing Char/Hover in favor of Physical Perfection/Focused accuracy is that I also lose out on the 2.5% Energy/Negative defense with the Basalisk set.
Smashing isn't a big concern, as best I can recall there are few, if any Ranged/AoE sources of Smashing damage. Most if it is going to be Melee, which is quite readily handled, as it's always paired up with Smashing/Lethal. So I have that capped already. And any Ranged smashing is going to typically be paired up with Energy.
Yes, Psionic is a bit of a hole. But 25% defense and 33% resistance to it is a heck of a lot better than the exactly nil that I have with my /Fire Brute and her Healing Flames. It's not like I'm going to head into PvP where I'll be butting up against potentially pure sources of Psi damage.
Main thing to watch out for are Carnival and Rikti bosses, which I do anyway.
The main source of -To-Hit that I know of are CoT ghosts and Arachnos Widows, I do believe. Because CoT dwells in hated cave maps, I avoid them while levelling a character. Typically I always have my "Last Chance to Hit" monitored, and it dips below 95 on so few occassions I just pop a Yellow or two.
The only other time it might be a problem is when some boss pops a Tier 9, and typically that's also accompanied by +Res that I'm not going to be able to overpower anyway. So typically I just wait that out since by that time I've usually gotten everything else in the spawn nice and dead.
Char is there to serve solely as a set mule, and for the slots I have, I'm not sure if I can get it back anyplace.
Good catch on the Eradication - Damage, as I think I misclicked there.

My pointing out of defense holes etc. was not supposed to attack your build, as you seem to have understood (or I misunderstood your understanding). As a Kat/WP I was trying to point out to you where you will run into problems with this character, there is no way to close the ranged and ae smashing and psionic holes, those are simply a fact of life for a Kat/WP, the same for the problem with defense debuffs.
If you avoid problematic mobs you will obviously not run into many problems, ever. I was simply trying to point out some problems that might occur if we consider any mob as a possible opponent.
The reason I mentioned Focused Accuracy is that unless there are still mobs (which you can hit) around to bash on, waiting is not an option. A Kat/WP relies heavily on DA hitting at least once every 10 seconds (if your enemies are to be taken serious and you have aggro). Without an active DA, you have a huge defense hole that will get exploited instantly.
Oh, I know you're not attacking it. I'm just pointing out that I can't thing of any pure Ranged/AoE smashing, and I'm used to having to a big gaping weakness to Psionics. Sorry if I came off as combatative.

You won't run into it that often, but if you fight any Warwolves it's gonna suck, because they REALLY like to throw rocks at your head.
Also, Gravity Control powers are flagged Smashing, and some of them have no positional flag at all. Lift is an example of one. (Levitate from Mind Control is the same way I believe)
Fortunately, you don't run into too many NPCs that pack those powers. Only Family Consiglieres and Kadabra Kill have Gravity that I know of, and I can't think of any NPC with Mind powers who get Levitate.
Warwolves and their rocks are much more common though. There are a couple missions that have nothing BUT warwolves in them, and they pop up very frequently when running Council and 5th Column missions above level 25 or so.

I haven't taken Hover in a long time, when I last did it didn't seem viable for anything other than quickly switching to it in combat with fly active. I stand corrected then and will check it out once more when making a new Character that I can see hovering.
A friend has suggested taking Stealth instead of Hover. I've never taken the power and have no idea how much defense it provides, and how much remains when it is not active. Could it be used as a replacement for Hover to nudge me over into softcap territory?

Recalling that Rise to the Challenge gives -3.75 % To-Hit, I ditched Hover from the build, since it's melee damage that one usually has to worry about. So I think I'm essentially soft-capped.
I also stuffed the Numina unique into Fast Healing, and the Regenerative Tissue unique into Health rather than the plain IO's.
Am curious if there is anything I'm slotting in a somewhat overkill-ish fashion that I would put a slot elsewhere and help out the build.

Poked around with the silly thing again. Realizing that I'm likely going to be double stacking Divine Avalanche, I swapped the Touch of Deaths for Mako's Bites to get some more damage, pulled slots out of the things I had four slotted with LotG's and put them in attacks to slot Eradication sets to further up AoE defense. Also pulled a slot out of Quick Recovery and put it in Stamina to get a touch more recovery. Also tentatively slotted a Miracle instead of the Regenerative Tissue in Health, due to current Endurance issues (she's at 33ish right now).
Have I overbuilt her for Defense and not enough offense or recharge?
Is there any slotting I should go for that winds up being superior to what I have?

Well, okay, I think I might've gone just a touch over the top. But then again I already have the most expensive pieces of the build sitting around (The LotG Globals Recharges).
I based this off a build Twilight Snow posted in another Kat/Will thread awhile back.
I've been playing my SS/Fire Farming brute for awhile and find myself a touch frustrated at her fragility. If I didn't have RotP on her, she'd be unplayable in PPD/Longbow missions.
I'd really like to ditch hover, since I'm terrible at steering while in flight. But that will take me down below the cap. How much will .3 or .6 below the cap make a difference?
