Fire/Regen Feedback

I've been trying to settle on a new scrapper build and I wanted to try something uncommon, but still powerful. I've never given fire melee a chance, and I hadn't leveled a regen character very far once WP came out. Originally I was going to go with /SR, but I later settled on the idea that I could try to softcap defenses on regen instead and have better luck that way.

Some things to note beforehand:

  • No purples/pvp sets.
  • I'm sure I've sacrificed a lot by focusing on smashing/lethal defence, so my recharge is lacking.
  • The last 2 powers were just thrown in because I was lacking slots, but I was considering dropping the epic pool and picking up hasten/SS.
  • I know my recharge is fairly low for regen, but I'm not sure how important max hp, regen, and defence are to a regen character.
  • I have no idea if the 6% heal bonus from numina's only works with recon or if it affects all healing/regen. Mids seems to indicate that it only affects recon and DP. I'm very open to the idea of dropping the 4th slot from all my numina's sets if that's the case.
  • This build is hungry for slots. No Kismet in there, but it couldn't hurt if I can spare the slot.
  • Lastly, I know this build doesn't accomodate for pvp slotting, but how does fire/regen perform in general in pvp?

After reading around the forums on regen feedback in general, I'm seeing more and more that people recommend heavy recharge bonuses. While I still haven't squeezed hasten into the build yet, I did drop a couple percentage points out of S/L defense to put a lot more recharge into the click powers in the regen set. You're probably going to want to go for Melee defense rather than S/L defense. It is a bit more reliable than s/l defense. Also a PvP Fire/Regeneration build focuses on recharge>hp>recovery>regeneration in that order. Fire/Regeneration is incredibly powerful in PvP but you'd be best to just go with regular common invention IOs for a while so you can learn how to PvP. Its a lot different than PvE.

Thanks for the quick and informative reply! Your build does have a lot of what I'm looking for to draw inspiration from, although it hasn't been updated for inherent fitness. Not really a big issue, but any advice on what to fill those empty powers with would also be welcome.

I'm quite happy with where it is right now. It's not quite melee capped, but with Shadow Meld on such a short recharge, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. I ended up going heavy on recharge after all. I had to move some slots around to get the accuracy bonuses from LotG. I wanted to fit some crushing impacts in, but after dropping scorch, I found I wasn't quite able to do that without dropping all the melee defense from touch of death. I slotted the snipe mainly for the attractive set bonuses, but I don't know how often I would use a snipe.

With a Recharge/healing alpha, most of the gaps I left in should be filled. The accuracy and tohit are a bit on the low-end, but Build Up should help out. Perhaps an accuracy/defense alpha could be used instead. Any feedback on this new build would be appreciated.

I'm at work so I can only comment about generalities instead of specifics but...

Build Up will help a bit, but only when it's running. Unless you're totally dead set on having 2 travel powers, I'd drop one (Super Speed for me), turn that into Tactics, move all 6 pieces of Gaussian's into Tactics and leave Build Up with a single Recharge IO. (I know, I know, you probably need both for PvP) Now you have a good bit more +To Hit with Tactics and the Gaussian's: Chance for Build Up now can fire at any time, not just when Build Up is recharged and good to go. This is how my DM/Regen is set up (Course, I don't have Build Up but I can't think of a single character of mine with more than 1 slot in Build Up outside of maybe a Blaster or two).

Oh, and the Spiritual tree of Alphas are absolutely amazing on /Regen. My DM/Regen won't be using anything else. The +Recharge is quite noticeable even with only 1/3 of the boost ignoring ED and the +Heal is just icing on the cake, again, even with only 1/3 of the boost ignoring ED. I can't wait to see what effect the Rare and Very Rare version of the Spiritual Alpha will bring to my /Regen.

I've always been a fan of the SS/SJ combo, but you're right; Tactics would probably be a better use of the Gaussian set, and I still have the endurance to spare. I prefer SJ as a travel power, but SS has its uses when stealthing missions. I'm not sure where this build stands right now on hit chance against say +4 mobs.

To see accuracy against +4 mobs, options -> configuration -> exemping & base values -> base tohit = 39. Make sure that if you put the Gaussian set in Tactics, you remove the proc when checking the accuracy, or it will count both Tactics and the proc.

Used to be I would agree with this, nowadays I'm leaning more toward S/L defense.

Good reason for it: Machine guns.

Machine guns are the single most common defense debuff in the game. They are flagged Ranged/Lethal, so you could have 1,000% melee defense and it won't stop that gun from hitting you.

2-3 guys with machine guns hit you and all that melee defense goes away in a hurry with nothing you can do about it, because /Regen doesn't have any defense debuff resistance at all.

With S/L defense, at least you can make it more difficult for those machine gunners to take away all that defense you built up with IOs. It will still happen, just not as fast.

I switched my Claws/Regen from Melee to S/L and am noticing a world of difference when fighting Council, Malta, Crey, and any of the other enemy groups that have a lot of machine gun users.

I forgot about the machine gunners' defense debuff. Are there any melee attacks in the game that do not have a smashing or lethal component? Touch of Death has a couple nice set bonuses, but it lacks recharge and accuracy. If I focus on S/L defense I can 4 slot Kinetic Combats and then shore up the weak spots with other sets.

Also, thanks Werner for pointing out the tohit values for me. That will really help all my character builds in general.

Here's how it looks when I make sure that I can hit +4 mobs with 95% accuracy (with tactics on minus the proc). I also moved the defenses back to S/L instead of melee, but I'm still about 10% short of softcap. I didn't want to drop any of the recharge bonuses I had, and the only way I could see to get close to the softcap would be to put in more Reactive Armors and another Kinetic Combat set, which wouldn't be possible because I dropped Scorch. Feedback on this newer build is very much appreciated. You guys have been tremendously helpful so far!

There are some, you won't see them very often though.

Notable exceptions would be Midnight Grasp and Siphon Life, so whatever you do, don't try to solo Nosferatu

And on the rare occasion you run across a melee attack that has no S/L component....you're a frigging Regen!!! Heal it back!

I was merely wondering if there was any benefit to using melee def over S/L, considering S/L is attached to almost all melee attacks and provides the additional benefit of covering ranged S/L damage as well.

If you don't plan on using moonbeam, and you can sacrifice that recharge, you could switch the manticore set for a siphon insight for another 3.75% s/l defense (and some more accuracy).

I'd also do something with tactics and BU... either flip the slotting or drop the gaussians altogether or something. BU has a crappy recharge and that gaussian 6 set isn't doing too much for you defensively.

I'm very thankful for all the advice, everyone. You've really helped me turn this build completely around and still fulfilled all the criteria I was looking for! Instead of taking moonbeam, I've replaced it with Dark Blast for a more consistent tohit debuff that I can throw into an attack chain if I need a quick ranged attack. The S/L def is back at 40.3%, which is good enough for me. Here's how it looks now:
