FM/SR: Question About Defense
Yes and no. There is no difference in mitigation between 45% defense (aka soft-cap) and 105% defense (random number pulled from my jelly bean) in typical game play (tower buffed Lord Recluse maybe, but I really doubt you will be facing him solo with any serious expectations of long term survival). Until defense debuffs start to kick in that is. Yes, SR has 95%+ ddr (defense debuff resistance), but a dozen or so Cimerorans whacking away at you will eventually drop you out of the soft-cap if you started at or very near 45%. If you started at say 50%, you have that much more of a buffer before you have to worry about cascading defense failure (the more often they hit you > the more often they debuff you > the more often they hit you > etc etc.) I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to get to much higher than 50% though, and on my DM/SR I even settled for 44.7% melee defense, as DM has -tohit in its attacks, which is essentially like +def. With FM as your primary, your secondary mitigation is +dmg, so as long as you're confident in your ability to defeat potential threats faster than they can debuff your 45% you should be fine.
Such is my understanding at least.

However if such instances call for protection for cascading defense failure, and the buil has ample room, go ahead and throw in elude as a OH Sheet power.
protector-knight: lvl 50 invun/axe tank
Lillian Brick: lvl 50 stone/stone/pyre tank
Hybrid-knight: lvl 50 db/regen scrap
Vengful-Nature: lvl 50 spines/sr/bod scrap
Element-Wizard: lvl 50 fire/storm/stone troll
I see plenty of significant tohit buffs / defense debuffs in my typical gameplay, and I see people who claim "anything above 45% is pointless" as an undeniable truth also tend to complain about defense powersets being useless as soon as the devs introduce any kind of mob with higher tohit...
That said, it's true that in many encounters, 45% def will be as good as any value above. As someone who doesn't mind using inspirations, I build for 45% (if I ever get to that point) and rely on purples when the situation calls for it.
Now, with SR, I don't see the point of *not* picking Elude, as there's so much room in builds since inherent Stamina.
Still have to rework my KM/SR in mids before respecing her...
I have an SD/WM tanker I'm building that, once at 50 and with the right sets, according to MIDS, will be at 57% Melee, 55% Ranged and 49% AoE, assuming I can get the PvP +3% Def IO. Even without it she's well and above the softcaps, but I am worried (See: Paranoid) about the DDR and I want to take her on a States someday. And if she gets stuck as an Off Tank or, lord help me, main tank on it... I'll need the extra Defense...
Hello Fellow Scrappers:
I'm planning on rolling a FM/SR scrapper in the near future and wanted to know if it's true that going past 46%-47% defense is pointless? I was working on this build and got it way beyond that and did not want to go with it if it does not make a difference.
THANKS!
