A bit of preamble...

The backstory of Black Paws is located in another thread here entitled "Of Wolf and Man". It's not neccessary to understand the following fiction, but it certainly adds gravitas.

Black Paws, Wind Eagle, and a few other characters in this are Native American in origin. This is not dwelled upon, but may not be obvious at first glance. This story involves characters from two SG's originally found on the Victory Server, though they have fallen into lethargy. They are The Dawn of Distorted Light and the Pargon League of Justice (No, Pargon is not a mispelling).

Names and certain other elements may sound a bit odd or campy, but are used as such as they are the names of toons and such. They are used in order to pay respect to their owners.

Without further delay, the beginning of the story. Comments are always encouraged.

The Wolf and The Eagle

Black Paws could see his breath in the air. That’s how he knew Wind Eagle was unhappy. His chief’s countenance was seldom marred by any genuine emotion. You could generally tell it from the local weather patterns.

“You’ve gone too far this time, Black Paws.”, Wind Eagle said.

“He took my eye, so I took his. Seemed fair to me.” Black Paws replied.

The wolf warrior stood with his back to the Pargon League of Justice’s second-in-command. Fresh scars covered the right side of his face underneath his war paint

“You MAIMED him! He’ll be lucky to walk again, much less physically be able to serve the time behind bars he owes society. We have to operate within the framework of the law or we’re just as bad as the villains in the Isles. You can’t turn these criminals into victims in the eyes of the courts or it ruins everything we’ve striven for since coming together under Pargon’s leadership.”

The Wolf Warrior spun on his chief drawing his blades. Kicking Wind Eagle in the gut, Black Paws knocked him into the nearby wall. His ritual blades were crossed into an “x” over his teammate’s throat before Wind Eagle’s cloak had even settled from the impact. Black Paws snarling face was so close to Wind Eagle’s that the feral whispers that followed could only be heard by the two of them.

“WHERE was the LAW when he savaged that little girl? WHERE was the LAW when he ran over three people with a car trying to get away from us?”

Black Paws voice rose to a roar as his face contorted with rage.

“WHERE WAS THE LAW WHEN MY FAMILY WAS BUTCHERED?!”

The blades at the throat of the Avatar of Chinook suddenly were slick with condensation. Black Paw’s eyes detected no trace of change in Wind Eagle’s face. The painted skull still stared at him unblinkingly. A blast of nearly solid air propelled The Wolf from the Eagle across the length of the meeting table in their base and into the floor on the other side. Black Paws sought to rise, but suddenly felt his strength leave him. Whipping his head to the side, he found himself looking at the calm technological form of Giga Hertz. The Defender had used his Kinetic control to interfere with the flow of blood and electrical signals to his muscles, draining his endurance.

“Calm down, Robert.” The digitized voice urged him.

Hair hanging down over his bowed head, Black Paws snarled, “Don’t…call…me…that.”

“Let him go, Giga.”, Wind Eagle said.

“I don’t think…”

“It’s ok, let him go.”

Giga Hertz motioned at the prone figure of Black Paws, and immediately his fists tightened on the hilts of his blades, his breathing became regular, and muscles tensed along sinewy arms and legs. The Wolf’s powers of recovery were as impressive as Giga Hertz’s ability to suppress them.

Rising to his feet, Black Paws sheathed his blades. Anger still marred his features, but something else took residence there as well. Resolve.

“So that’s it then, isn’t it? It’s not about what’s right and what’s wrong. It’s about the letter of the law. It’s about rules and regulations and pleasing the powers that be. Your tactics have already driven Thunder Crow to join another one of these stupid groups. Ghost Bear and Coyote wander around like lost children. None of you has the strength to embrace The Way like I do. None of you has the strength to understand the real meaning of the word you proudly splay across your banners and sigils… Justice.”

Offering a hand in friendship to Black Paws, Wind Eagle began, “Black Paws, I…”

“Save it, Chief. Save it for that technological freak you run with there. Save it for your brother Frost Raven over in the Isles. Maybe he’ll agree with you on the day you finally put him down for betraying your grandfather.”

“Frost Raven betrayed us all, you know that.”

“I don’t care. I’m leaving, and I don’t want to see you...,”

The Wolf turned and pointed a finger at Giga Hertz.

“…or you on the streets interfering with me or any of my packs.

With these final words, Black Paws lept across the table and into the portal room in one bound. Energy crackled around him as he faded from the Pargon League of Justice’s base and appeared near the courthouse of Atlas Park. A series of short, powerful leaps took Black Paws to a corner of the plaza, where he crouched and watched the heroes of Paragon City scurry forth on their business.

“Good afternoon. *siiip**

Black Paws turned to find himself in the presence of an immense bald man in a scintillating pink business suit, drinking a cup of coffee.

“How are you today?’ the man asked.

“You look like a pink nightmare.” was Black Paws grumbled reply.

A smile on his face and a pinky finger extended in proper manner, the hulking figure said, “I am Mr. Huggy, pleased to meet you.”

‘I’m Black Paws.”

“That’s it? Just Black Paws? No affiliation?”

His face srunched up in annoyance, The Wolf replied, “I just quit.”

“*Siiiip* A lone wolf, eh? *siiip* Let me tell you a little bit about my organization. It’s called The Dawn of Distorted Light…”
