You can definetly hit the softcap to all positional defenses, of that I have no doubt. And if money is no object, then you can really make a beast of a farmer.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

Good to know. I was a bit worried that if I invested into my defenses my attacks would end up packing all the force of an enraged kitten. Thanks for the input.
Do you have mid's hero designer?
I have my elec/shield brute to lv44 now and he is a beast. And yes the build was expensive, but no insanely so. I don't know how much infamy you are sitting on. This build cost me probably 400 million or so give or take. I was sitting on 1.7B or something and the cost was soaked up by a few of my less rich toons as well.
If you don't have mid's... get it. It is a live saver for planning your build. I will post the data chunk of my build here if you want it.
But in a nutshell, slot for defense. melee first, then ranged and aoe. All the rest will come as it will. 43.8% melee defense at lv44 is not too shabby. I still have 2 more sets to add to my build as well. here is the expensive part... 2 obliteration sets. start bidding for em now. sciroccos x5, force feedback set, perf shifter set, mako bite set, touch of death set, mocking beratement x5, gaussians set, lotg x4(2 sets of these) both of my sets of 4 of lotg have the +recharges. It isnt required but i got lucky on recipe rolls. i have a steadfast protection +def in true grit... i took scirroco as my patron. i still have to add a thunderstrike set to mu lightning and when i get and 6 slot striker, i am adding blood mandate.
stats for my build:
43.8 melee def
40.1 ranged
42.6 aoe
197% regen
max hp 119%
end rec 158% i have the perf shifter set but an addition perf shifter +end in one with shield.
128% recharge
This combo for a brute is the most fun i have had playing a brute. i have 2 other 50 brutes. mace/stone and fire/ea. both are good but this elec shield blows them away.
Just let me know if you want that build and i will post the data chunk.

1. def
2. yes. see my prev post
3. the io sets i mentioned give additional dmg on all attacks. 6 of the sets give the additional dmg. 20.5% additional dmg by my math. So slotting the sets alone add dmg. and this is to all attacks.
as far as recharge goes, i have plenty of recharge. LR and SC come back super fast. Those 2 attacks stacked after i use buildup will destroy most of a big mob then i destroy the rest. by the time i go to another mob, LR and SC are recharged. Unless I am on a team, then the mobs die faster. But i built my elec/shield for solo primarily.

Here is the build I am planning for my electric shield scrapper - except for the miracle/numina unique's and the LoTG +recharge, it should be a fairly cheap build (I get the expensive stuff with merits). It doesn't have a TON of recharge, but it has enough and I haven't shorted enhancements on any of the powers just to fit in the def bonuses.

Ok - just realized I was in brute not scrapper forum - just substitute any immobilze power and single target blast for the two powers from the scrapper APP to keep the same def bonuses. The above build is softcapped to melee and ranged and close to softcap on AE - thats actually the toughest to softcap.

Softcapping def is a great goal, but requires too much sacrifice for this particular Elec/SD brute build in my opinion. Even if you did hit the all 3 types of def softcap, I suspect you had to have made compromises in everything else. My recommendation is built to balance to a degree. If your ok with your 3 def to be just 40%+, you can attain more wiggle space for improvements. Not to mention you'd probably save a lot of inf. Speaking by personal experience, it's not so bad to eat a small purp candy before every mob since you can decimate +2/x8 probably the fastest solo. Just my 2 cents.
After a lot of play time I'm finally going to IO my first toon. I'm sitting on a lot of infamy and I'm sure I won't have enough but I'm approaching this in a "money is no object" kind of fashion. My only real goal is to turn my elec/shield into a monster but I'm not really sure what to aim for. Should I go for damage and recharge or is it possible to softcap any of my defenses? Shield doesn't seem like it's necessarily the most protective of sets so I'm not actually sure if I can softcap anything. Maybe I'm not giving it enough credit, or maybe my piteous knowledge of IO set bonuses is dragging me down. I was also thinking the recharge route could be fun because it would let me use my AoEs and probably turn my brute into a farming machine. I'm rambling, so to recap:
1.should I focus on softcapping my defenses or +recharge and damage
2.is it even possible to softcap Elec/Shield?
3.if it is, will the resources spent softcapping end up making my attacks under preform due to the focus on defense over attack?
