So, I'm looking at an extra (spare, old) processor I have laying around - an Athlon 64 x2 4000, socket AM2 - and trying to find a use for it. Considering grabbing a Shuttle style case of some sort and throwing a WHS system together for kicks (and for a central backup point.)
All other systems in the house (save one that isn't mine) are running Win7x64 Home Premium.
1. Anyone throw one of these together with the OEM disks that are floating around out there?
2. Does it play nice with W7HPx64? (I don't mind the W7 backup program, but I don't really want to grab more external drives for backup, and I'd like to centralize a few things.)
3. IIRC this is based on some version of Server 2003. (Which I may be wrong on.) Any word on an updated base OS coming for it that anyone's heard of?
4. As an always-on system, anyone have good, low power component recommendations, or a good site focused on this sort of thing? Probably heading for a Caviar Green drive, of course, even underclocking (!!!) the CPU out of interest of heat/cooling/noise in what would be a smaller case, finding a MB with onboard video (since this isn't, of course, a gaming system) and the like - my restriction is, of course, that CPU.
Non COH, "what the heck" question:
