Should We Continue to Judge Characters Based on Performance at 50?
"Continue to"? I never have. *cackles*
I have a very hard time playing a character that isn't fun by level 25ish. That's just not acceptable. I'm not here to gaze somberly into the distance, awaiting a time when I can have fun. No, I'm gonna have a blast NOW. Maybe that's why I've never gotten anywhere with a bland weapon-wielding powerset. "You get Crowd Control in only twelve levels!" "But I'm not having fun!" "But you will be having fun!" "Why wait when I can have fun right now?" Also, I exemplar all. the freaking. time. Friends are playing new characters? EX into sewer runs! TF going on and I have time for once? EX into the task force! I'm bored and a mission team is advertizing? EX into newspaper mission team! I did this before the Powers 5 Levels Above EX'd Level awesomeness and the Exemplar XP too. So it's all even better now! I build characters with this in mind too! When going for set bonuses, I try and make sure they apply by level 30 (or the level I get that power, whichever is higher). I don't fill my low levels with nothing but CJ/Hurdle/Health/OtherSupportingPowers. And I still challenge myself when Exemplarifying down into a group by being reckless beyond belief. Actually, I sorta do that all the time. Anyway! My basic point is that I don't play late bloomers unless I really truly love their concept. They're boring for like 75% of the game. I'm not a fan of that. |
My 50's are essentially shelved. I won't delete them "just in case", but I know i'll rarely play them again.
And I'll echo what someone above said about the lvl 40+ lvls. I have quite a few of these sitting around because they "peaked" and I am no longer looking forward to a new power. Time for a new alt! Yeah!
When IO's first came out I started work on my favorite Brute a L50 SS/Elec and quickly realized that I could not afford the L50 IO's for sale I then (early days of the market) settled on L30-33 and found a lot for sale there for a more reasonable price. Since I did do a little PVP every now and again I stayed in that range and did my first IO redition on her.
Now days the L27-33 recipes can be nasty expensive. I still tailor my characters to be able to exemp to the mid 30's just in case but avoid the high priced IO's. I also have more than the 2 million I started my first IO project with.
I play most for the journey but like my favorite and a few other 50's I have decided that roughly once a month I should take some time and one week only play my 50's on a rotating basis. This will help cover the expenses of up and coming character projects plus keep me in touch and familar with previous projects.

I understand your point. And you made me realize I may think too much in this way while planning a new toon : how will it perform at 50 with a good IO build ? Actually I tend to shelve my level 50 toons fast, and will probably spend more time on it in the leveling process.
The level 50 content is clearly missing, while there is plenty of lower level content, true point. (Hope GR will fix that). On the other hand, I dont like at all to play being exemplared : I feel loosing the privilege of what I just won before, new powers and slots.
Another set of questions could be : is this character fun leveling with from 1 to 50 ? Will it be fine with SOs only ? Does it perform well before getting an expensive or final level 50 build ?
