This toon is already at level 30, so those powers are fixed. I can paste an as-built if someone helping me would need that. But here goes.

This is a toon I decided to try to softcap with some restraint on budget.

Tell me where I'm doing it wrong if I am, please. ty.

Breaks the rule of fives on 6.25% global rech. changed Blaze's IOs to Thunderstrike, or if I feel it's too expensive, it's not like I'm really getting anything useful from it, I might Frankenslot.

Why cap S/L? Go for ranged def. Still possible, even w/the BotZ nerf, esp w/a Fire/Cold and all the hold/slow powers. Thunderstrikes, Lockdowns, Pacings. BTW, I did manage to cap ranged on my Fire/Ice build, but it was at the sacrifice of Rain of Fire, which I wasn't too happy with. I might do it on a dual build, but for the most part, I'd rather have more offense w/like high 30's def, that I can cap w/a small purple.

Are we playing the same game?

S/L is the best way to protect yourself hands down. If you're a blaster you also have the option of taking a different armor and with Tough getting the S/L res around 50ish and then use Aegis, Cleaving and Erad, etc to get the ENFC.

I'd like to see the Range cap. That would be great actually.

That said, either cap would work really well. I've never had a capped blaster and always depend on the competence of tanks to get the aggro off me when I let loose the big AoE hurt.

My first thoughts about the weakness of merely S/L is clockwork, and we're not around those much, CoT and Overseers et al.

The def flavor of choice for blasters, defenders & controllers have been ranged for a while. All my aforementioned high lvls were capped or near. W/the BotZ nerf, that's a lot harder to achieve, but still doable, though I think increasingly not worthwhile.

S/L's great--most of my resist-based melee toons shoot for that too, but if I have no reason to close into melee, say w/a Fire/Ice blaster, I'm gonna go for ranged every time. Lots of pure psi, en, etc damage types out there.

I know I'm asking you to do something here, but, How? How would I take the build above, and keep nearly all powers the same and get range capped?

If you could, take that data chunk, smack it around, you don't even need to reslot stuff that makes no difference, and get my fire/ice gal capped to range.

She's got cheap enough sets I could second build or respec her w/o worries.

Here's my horribly gimped quick attempt to throw a ranged fire/ice together. I pass the cap by 2.3% but that won't free up some of the six slottign I had to do to get capped.

I'm trying to play w/the new Mids' for I17, but the data tables are borked atm. I'll try again when they're fixed, cuz I don't wanna roll it back.

Wait, I think I posted a ranged-capped build on my guild forum as a theoretical build. It's not your build by a long shot (no need for Ice Armor for one thing), just one way to get to ranged def-cap w/a Fire/Ice blaster. Or at least very close (like 44%?), which then you could sub in the newly gimped BotZ set to get the last 1% or so by gimping yet another power a little bit.

To reiterate, I would *not* do this, but would settle for a 32%-ish ranged def and combine & chew purp insps on a regular basis, but it could be done. At the very least, I'd make it a dual build, cuz I love my Rain of Fire, esp for big events (raids, invasions, etc).
