When you first start up the game it has to patch itself to the most current live version. This usually consists of 2+ GB of data, which can take quite a while depending on your connection speed. Fortunately, you should only have to do the large download once. Unfortunately, you have to patch through the updater to play the game. After the initial download and patch, you'll only have to download more when there are updates to the game.

im in vegas...and using cable modem. it says 3hrs now, thats what i thought was so weird. ive never had anything take so long.

Bah. Don't complain. My cable is 256kbps (anything faster and, well, no CoH for me), which translates to roughly a sustained speed of 30KB/s. At 2.9GB total, that's a *28 hour* (and 9 minutes) download for me under ideal conditions. 
Yay for boxed editions. [which cut the download from an Architect Edition install down to only about 300MB, so around 3 hours]
so i downloaded free trial and got all signed up. but when i open game it says it has like 5hrs remaining for an updater??
any help on what this is, or how to play right away...please!
