About a month ago we started a story thread called "Send No Money Now" (http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=203758). I thought it might be useful to provide a little context for to story as it might help readers better understand what is going on and maybe even find ways to participate.
First of all, just to be clear, RUR is a bona fide supergroup on Virtue, albeit a rather young and small one. Also, the characters mentioned in the thread are mostly existing player characters (though maybe not the Nemesis Hussar Bob).
The story of RUR is the story of its two founders; business tycoon Dr Tasman and mad scientist Professor Russum. They joined up with a dream of making superpowers commercially available to the public, hence the slogan "You too can be a superhero!" For Tasman and Russum RUR was to be their passport to fame, fortune and recognition, while of course bringing forth a better tomorrow for the whole of mankind. So they hired an eclectic team of misfits and got to work.
In practice things did not quite work out the way they had planned. Finding a safe, reliable and economically viable way to enhance humans turned out to be really, really hard. Consider, for instance, that while irradiating a spider may seem a simple enough process, getting said spider to bite someone on demand is anything but, especially as in practice out irradiated spiders tend to have a shockingly short life spans often measured in seconds.
So with debts mounting and nothing to show for all their hard work, Tasman and Russum begin to cut corners. The science gets sloppier, their methods more and more questionable. This is really where our story starts and as the Scarlet Sabre would say, "It will end badly."
The focus of RUR is comedy, but we hope it will come across as comedy with believable situations and real characters rather than just a parody of the superhero genre. The things our characters attempt will frequently go wrong, and hopefully that will provide the legitimate heroes of Paragon City an opportunity to interact with us. Or to put it another way, heroes need problems to solve; we aspire to provide some of the problems.
