Aaaaaannnnd here we go. This vote will determine who faces off against Shia for the title next month so make sure ya get the word out early and often that everyone can vote.

The challenge this month was to create a scenario that enveloped defeat in any way. Be it with a hero rarely being defeated or a villains true defeat or however they wanted to portray it. The field was opened up for the artists and they really did step up. Gratz to Foo, Apro and Shia for making it to the top three.

The-Foo

Aprosaath

Some notes:
  • Toxic Shia carries immunity this month as the winner of Septembers challenge
  • The winner of this months challenge will go onto the final round next month to face Shia for the title

So as always, make sure and get the word out that anyone on the boards can vote in this contest. Also remember that you are voting for the art matching the theme and not the artists individually! Voting will be closed on October 31st - midnight PST.

Good luck guys!

I'm going to have to vote for Foo on this one...

Both pics are great but Foo seems to have capture the larger sense of defeat while Apro showed a villian being beaten but c'mon... Villians aren't defeated just because they're captured! They just use their time in the Zig to devise even bigger and grander schemes... Basically I can see the hero in Foo's piece being shaken to his very core while the villian in Apro's is likely to just go "Drats! Foiled again!" and move on...

Foo, the sense of dread and sorrow truely pierced the viewers' hearts through the screen.

My usual wall o' text (does anyone ever read these things )...
my vote's at the end if ya want to skip down but it'll cost ya. Mwhahah!

Shia: That is very cool that you actually made a clickable animation that incorporates
many/multiple images, some funny gags and even a multiple choice ending. Bravo that is a whole 'nother
level of creativity.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Aprosaath: This is a fine piece and you have also shown some strong improvement as well. What really worked well
here was your ability to convey distinct pieces of the costumes. I can readily make out each piece of armor,
the sharp pattern used and even the fact that it's actual armor and not the "armor pattern" on tights.
Good dynamics to Belle's pose and stance, you can almost feel the punch coming.
If I had to pick out what was taking away from the piece from me it would be, the wall and cars and sidewalk
all have the same pattern to them. It goes beyond uniformity to the point of too much "sameness"
throughout the piece and it distracts. Also the "weight of the combatants is missing"... Belle
is wearing full suit of metal armor and carrying Zerb's weight as well but you don't see
it reflected in the objects she is standing on. I do see the bend in the car hood but her foot does not appear
to be the source it seems to be hovering over it. Also, it's a small thing but, the shine effect on Zerbraxos
hooves make it look like the cleft in on the backside... like his hoofs are on backwards. To improve it I
would say correct the small details and choose a different texture effect for the metal of the cars and
a different one for the walls and leave the current one on the sidewalk and make it look more like
Belle's feet are applying crushing weight to the vehicles by having them buckle up around her feet.
A few minor things to touch up and this is a real nice looking piece.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Foo: Such a minimalist piece (3/4 of the page is flat black) and yet it so perfectly conveys a sense of defeat that
I'm shocked and pleasantly surprise. More than that it's an accomplishment in and of itself to do so much with so little
there isn't much for the viewer to see but it immediately tells the story and everyone who sees it feel the loss.

You know Foo way back in August you made a flippant remark (something about if enough people were to
drop out or dq themselves you would win by default and crow about it for years to come) and I replied to
you point blank that you shouldn't think that way at all and that there was no real reason you couldn't
win this contest outright legitimately as you had been showing steady improvement and your submission
for that month was a big step forward, you just needed to keep at it... this is what I was talking about.

All three put forth great efforts in different ways but in the end the Foo is the one that really captured the
concept of defeat (I feel the other half of me has now been hollowed out ) and very poignantly so...
far more than a hero who lost a fight... he really looks like he lost the war.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I vote Foo.

Well deserved bro.

P.S. Wonder what the theme will be for the final month? We had defeat so what about Ultimate Victory...
or what about an Ultimate Showdown type battle royal, CoH style!

I'm casting my vote for FOO! this month. His piece is all about that heart-crushing defeat, with no "flip-side of victory" anywhere to be seen.

and that makes it full of Win!

And ChristopherRobin: thanks for the critique! All valid points, and useful advice! (I'm guilty of over-using Photoshop filters in an attempt to get texture and "impressionism" - and I need to be stopped )

All pieces are very well done, Shia's animation was very cute and fit the theme, Apro's was well drawn and did fit the requirement as there was a defeat there, but yeah, I vote Foo, as while there wasn't a lot of art there, there was enough there to convey what would truly "defeat" a hero. His expression and the child's arm next to the teddy bear says it all.

Foo captured everything about the theme this month and easily deserves the vote. I vote Foo, even though I love Shia as my hetero bromance partner.

What I mean is you don't need people to drop out, get disqualified or quit for you to win.
Pieces like this can win regardless of who is still in the competition as I'm sure you can see by the coming landslide here.

mmm yeah i'm going to vote Foo too here.

Though i think if the hand would have been set with the child's palm face up it would have been more impactful all around. Very nice Foo, undoubtedly one of your best pieces i have seen.

Apro i really liked yours as well man. The addition of the car was a great touch and I loved the posing all around.

Of course Shia's flash game was awesome! Still having fun playing it lol.

Foo had the best take on the theme and showed in a piece what i hoped would come out. Emotion and true defeat! Great job bro!
