Looking to Upgrade Graphics Card

Really a simple question, I'm looking to buy a new graphics card ... what are the things to look for? Are there certain requirements for certain cards? Or not?

Basically, I was looking at upgrading a 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 to something decent on Nvidia

Also: What is the difference when it says "BFG", "Galaxy", or "PNY", ect.?

Thanks for the help all!

**This is on a laptop by the way ... if that makes a difference.

Upgrading a laptop is almost never possible. You will need to check with your laptop manufacturer to find out for sure. If it is possible, they should provide you with a list of options they have available (most likely, you'll need to purchase from them). On the off chance it is possible to upgrade, post the list they provide you and we'll make a recommendation.

BFG, Galaxy, PNY, etal are all manufacturers of graphic cards. ATI and NVidia provide these manufacturers the actual chipset to place on the cards.

Well, long story short. I ordered an HP HDX 16t, and loved it ... for 9 days. In thoes 9 days it bluescreened, wouldn't cooperate with my mouse, and would randomly think I didnt "have" a wireless connector (for the internet).

So we're sending it back. Might get a new one, who knows. But at the moment, I'm looking at the Dell Studio 17 and some educational deal.

$1399 gets you:
2.8 Core2 Duo
64bit Home Premium
17" WLED (1440x900) Screen
4GB DDR2
500GB Hard Drive
And Dell's largest battery (A 9 cell...my HP had a 12cell <.<)
No word on the backlit keyboard, which would be pretty much required for me =\

Its graphics card is the one I mentioned above: 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650

For other options, did you mean while customizing it? In that case, there are none. I'd havent gotten around to calling them yet, which I should do if that's what you suggest.

As an update: I called, and they said I could replace it at a later time. They didnt give me a list of options though. Not sure if that answers the question, or am I missing something?

By replacing it, they probably mean if your current one goes bad, they can put in another ATI HD3650. I think you're stuck with that card.

Dell has started making there video cards replacable with newer version. Problem is they are slow about it and charge almost as much for a new laptop. I seen it more for the XPS line. Ebay was selling some nVidia cards about a year ago but you needed to have the ati card to replace it not the intel.
