Thinking of making a Necro/Pain MM

Dawnshift

Hey everyone, I have been thinking of making a Necro/Pain but I'm not sure on the essential powers or pool powers that should be taken for a character like this. Does anyone have any tips for power choices, slotting, etc.?

I started a necro/pain not too long ago. I didn't get very high level with it because I got frustrated running my umpteenth mastermind into the brick wall that the devs call scrapyarders.

I can tell you that it's a great combo. You dish out some very high damage in melee, and the /pain later buffs are awesome (I've worked with people that had these buffs... my bots were raining ungodly more destruction than normal). You'll be able to solo very well, (be sure to drop painbringer on your grave knights, not the lich, slot lich for control) and teams will love having you around too.

EDIT: In regards to skippable/must have powers: Personal attacks on a MM are near pointless after level 24, and only marginally effective before that. You'll probably end up grabbing every power from /pain and only skipping personal attacks of necro/

Finally, USE BODYGUARD MODE.

Ok cool, any suggestions for pool powers? I figure Stamina is a must have on any character, but are there any others?

Good question! Stamina is not mandatory on most MM's, but on a /pain... kinda yeah.

Unless you get the miracle/numina uniques in your supress pain toggle. Then you're golden.

Travel: I almost invariably go with fly. With the new i16 benefit of pets zoning with you, you might even want to pick up group fly or team teleport (I know I will). Trick with group fly: "follow" your pet and use goto command so no pets drop out of fly range.

Leadership is usually very nice for MM's. I'd take assault and tactics. Fully slotted maneuvers will only give about 5% defense.

Presence: Get provoke so you can grab tons of aggro. You want the enemies hitting you, not your pets. You share damage in BG mode, and it becomes incredibly easy for you to stay alive with /pain.

I don't tend to take any other pools myself.

Cool, I'll put together a quick build in Mids and see how it looks.

i have a lvl 50 necro/pain what i learned about him is early on that he was kinda a boring toon. but after lvl 24 he started getting interesting again. but he slowly became a buffing healing machine and later lvls all i used my pets for was to protect fallen teammates while i rez. them but i can tell you if configured and slotted right i could keep 2 tankers in a fight with out much thought. I would also carry all respites and take a breaths with me so that i could keep the endurance of those tankers up and running. as i got to lvl 40 i focused on leadership to give them more buffs so by the time i got to 50 i had 5 healing powers self rez teammate rez and about 5 buffs for the angry tankers out there. this worked well as i play all on threat level 5 and those pesky CoT missions our teams never saw the inside of a rock jail. all in all it was a fun experince and is still my main toon to fly around with. look me up and you can see him in action. his name is lazarus darksoul and hes on freedom.

I am by no means an expert on IO's and builds, but I would go for the BoTZ rather than time/space manipulation for the awesome defense bonuses.

MM's in general prefer frankenslotting to actual set bonuses in pets. Especially because you want the unique +def and +res auras. You should slot the two recharge intensive pet damage bonuses into soul extraction, since that's the only place they go. For the regular pet damage auras, put one on your zombies and the other on the grave knights. Frankenslot the zombies to ED cap acc and damage. Frankenslot Grave Knights to ED cap damage, get a little accuracy, and throw in an acchillies heel proc. This will give all your pets a 10% base defense and 20% base resist to everything all the time.

EDIT: Forgot to add: Don't worry about getting damage/accuracy set bonuses; they only apply to you, and you don't attack. Go for defense/resist when you can, becuase you want to take the aggro and survive. Since bodyguard with 6 pets is effective 75% resist, anything more compunds amazingly well, and getting hit less often is always good.

With Necro/Pain you could add in Dark Blast and Gloom. They add on more -to hit, and with the potential damage buffs they can be less pathetic than usual. I took them to make soloing a little less boring. They can be skipped, and depending on how active your secondary is you may never take them. I just found them a bit more useful for /Pain, and I tend to carry the mind set of taking personal attacks to /Force Field as well. In the end it's a play style choice. You won't be gimp either way.
