I am deeply offended to have been excluded with my DM/regen.

I am thinking about my next build being a Fire/Regen and am wondering what kind of performance I can expect from /Regen without a primary that adds to the survivability.
You'll get impressive survivability as long as you IO intelligently. "IO intelligently" of course means getting craploads of recharge and as much defense as you can possibly manage. You'll be a good bit squishier than most other potential */regen combos, but you'll be throwing out boatloads of damage to make up for it. Plus, fire/* has really high +rech requirements for it's top damage attack string which fuses seamlessly with */regen's IO slotting needs.

For the vast majority of PvE play you should have no trouble. That's the main benefit of Regen having such a high level of flat-rate damage mitigation.

When facing a LOT of foes at once, or heavy-hitting bosses (such as those MA Council ones or Vanguard) or EBs/AVs, you will likely need a little extra mitigation. It's up to you whether you choose active mitigation such as knockdown or chewing insps, or passive mitigation such as extra Defence/Resistance via set bonuses or toggles. Or adjust tactics - you could "joust" foes by jumping in and out of melee range, or simply wait for Dull Pain + Instant Healing or MoG to recharge before fighting something that tough...

Concerning Knockdown, Air Superiority is very good at keeping Single-Targets flipped, and Energy Torrent is very good at negating "Alpha Strikes" from tightly-packed groups of foes. Both do fairly respectable levels of damage. With Fire/ I'd probably go for Energy Torrent to stack it with Fire Sword Circle (ET as you're jumping into a group to knock them down, then FSC when you're in the middle of them. Works great for my Spines/DA).

Sorry to forget your DM/Regen Umbral, I read the old US forum but not often enough to remember peoples toons (Though I do remember you for giving good advice ) so was going from what I could remember EU side.

Also I thought I had managed to get rid of this thread before anyone saw lol. Seems I failed.

However if has given me another question, which is how much +DEF should I be looking for if I did build a fire/regen (Considering aside from pvp IO's this is money no object)? Should I be aiming for 20ish% positional defence and making the recharge/regen do the rest of the work or is there a balance somewhere that I should be aiming for?

I guess I should also be asking about how much recharge I need and what the best attack chain is for fire melee, but I am sure I have read that someplace so will have a look myself rather than be considered too lazy.

Here are the 4 steps to */regen success:

1. Recharge
2. No. More recharge.
3. What did I just tell you? More recharge.
4. You've got unholy gobs of recharge now? Good. Get some defense.

In general, my */regen builds tend to manage roughly 20-25% +def to all positions and ~150% global +rech. If you need numbers to aim for, I'd go for that.
