Sun Goddess

The presence drifts, as it has done for perhaps eternity, unseeing, unknowing, unintelligent, non-corporeal. It drifts across void of an unnamed, unknown dimension, trackless, barren and empty. Thus it is, thus it has always been.

Thus it might always have been, but no. Others give them names, others cower in fear. Some refer to them as gods, and some as devils. Humans call them Rikti. They came to this barren place, their great machines punching holes in the fabric of the dimension’s reality, connecting it to the rest of the multiverse.

The Rikti left, seeking more conquests, other places to pillage and molest. But unknown and unseen, the presence joined them, following through ruptures and portals in space and time. It went without aim or objective, not seeking, or knowing.

Humans call the place they live “Earth” and describe it as part of the Sol system in the spiral arm of the “Milky Way” galaxy. The presence came through to this universe with the Rikti, but here it changed, somehow drawn to the star that gave the Earth life and sustained it. Being a presence without mind, form or consciousness it could not articulate its desire, its lust or need.

Scientists on earth claim that a photon takes 8.5 minutes to reach the Earth from the Sun. They also claim that because the internal matter of the Sun is so dense, it takes millions of years for the same photon to travel from the centre to the edge of the sun. Perhaps they are correct. Or perhaps not. Nobody can really know. Perhaps it’s little fire imps playing photonic tennis. Who can say? Perhaps there’s something magical in the heart of the Sun, or perhaps the Sun itself is a living being. Or perhaps, the strange conjunction of mystical, profane, scientific and righteous energies, all emanating from an otherwise insignificant dot on the face of the earth, known to Humans as Paragon City, had an effect on the Presence as it plunged into the sun.

The Presence merged with, became part of, the Sun, and with that became conscious. It delved deep into the heart of the orb, exploring, discovering, finding itself, learning, revelling in its new self, for the first time in eternity, it could feel. It felt the searing heat of the sun’s reaction, the flames caressing it, it’s bodiless “self” touched, burned, caressed, seared. Each flicker of flame gave it some miniscule measure of form, a body, a physicality it had never experienced. It slowly began to transform from nothingness, to energy and matter.

Time has no meaning to light, and the presence grew, timeless, over millennia. It moved back and forth in time as it learned the rules of this dimension, and how to break some of them. It learned of the shape of the universe, the form and the rules that helped to keep it together. It learned of itself and its needs, but also what it could give. It remembered Rikti, the things that brought it freedom, but only at the cost of [censored] it’s environment. It smelled and feared the damage they did to the multiverse, their unnatural presence – they are abominable, wrong. They needed to be stopped.

The presence burst forward from the Sun and headed towards the Earth, aiming for the small place where the Rikti were most concentrated, the place we call Paragon. Only then, once it had left the safety of it’s life-giving solar cocoon, did it realise how limited it really was. But there, on the edge of the Sun, at the surface, between the Sun and space, it became itself at last. It assumed the form it would take irrevocably, the shape of a human, but different. It knew the form, having read thoughts, magic, perhaps even the radio waves emanating from earth. But this body was fire and light, encased in skin and paradox, tall and physical by human standards but able to blend in amongst the great and the good.

It blasted into space and towards the Earth, it’s journey coming to an end. It became aware that at last, it was mortal, real, furious, vengeful and compassionate. No longer merely a presence or an amalgam of cosmic accidents, this was a living, breathing being, a person with consciousness and a sense of morals and duty. More than that it had a desire for justice, to right wrongs, to restore balance to the universe, to all universes, to all dimensions. It would begin here.

She took very little time to find her niche, where she would do best. She was female, not quite human, but no more, no less. Equal, but born of immense power. Mortal but enduring, her fists, fire-born yet solid like steel, a flaming sword, and breath of flame. Most foes were vanquished swiftly, but even then there were some she could not tackle alone. Not so very long ago, in the place she learned was now called “The Hollows” it found another female hero in trouble. She helped her – and in that helping, formed a friendship worthy of all the aeons of her existence. Her friend, known to all as Scarlet Shocker asked for a name, that first meeting. She looked up through the clouds to the haze covered sun, and the flames dancing across the surface that only she could see.

She smiled at her new friend. “My name is… Corona!”
