Part Seven: Heartbreak

Tian Chi ‘The Heaven Lake’ Urumqi – Xinyiang, China
Thursday 12th October - 05:49pm (09:49am UTC)

Meriam was packed and ready to return to Paragon. She was dreading seeing her father again but excited at the prospects of returning to the Militia. The trip into China had indeed been a good vacation. Ten minutes before Mer’de recalls her, she sat on the bank-side, admiring Lake Tian Chi. It was late evening and the sun was already setting, but Meriam knew that in America the sun was only just rising.

“Peaceful isn’t it?” Dragonfly asked, taking a seat beside Meriam.

“Yes it is. I’m contemplating taking a Yurt home with me.” Meriam joked. “So you’re staying behind for how long?”

“Wu Long says the sword is capable of more than flight, especially if merged with the Soaring Dragon, its power is immeasurable. He’s willing to train me. I’ll return to Paragon City when I’m done.”

“Where is the Soaring Dragon?”

“I’m yet to find it babes. Anyway, enough talk about my knives. You sure you’re feeling alright after yesterday’s fight?”

“Why did he attack us, because we were laughing at him?”

“He’s a respectful man. We shouldn’t have been laughing. What’s important is that you’re okay.”

“I’m fine. I just worry about you training with him. Promise me you’ll be careful.”

#Mer’de calling# came a voice from Meriam’s PDD. A hologram of Sir Igor Noren-ko rose from it. He was morphed into his human form.

#Meriam here Monsieur Mer’de. Just saying goodbye to ‘Brina.#

Meriam looked up into Sabrina’s eyes and the two smiled at each other. She lowered her gaze and changed her expression. “I’ve been doing a lot of thinking… and err.”

“Oh, there’s no need to thank me. I’ve never seen you as happy as you’ve been here and that itself means a lot to me.” Sabrina interrupted.

“Yeah, err, yeah. I was… erm… I was… actually thinking about our relationship… I mean, I’ve been trying to find the right time to tell you… and err, I guess I better do so before I leave. It’s just… I look up to you… you know, I… I absolutely love the way you fight and how beautiful you are. It’s… its how I’d like to be when I’m older, you know? And … I don’t know if I really… I mean… the kiss on the cliff… it was my first so… you know, it was just so… amazing. Like a dream come true. A real fantasy… but at the same time, it was so confusing. I had never imagined kissing a girl… you know? All these sudden rush of emotions”

“So what are saying?”

Meriam looked a little apologetic. She could see the hurt in Sabrina’s eyes. “Err” she mumbled, searching for the right words. Nothing.

“It’s okay. You’ve said enough as it is” said Sabrina, climbing to her feet and heading off towards a Yurt.

“Oh no, no, oh ‘Brina please don’t be upset. It’s… it’s just… oh please… we can still be friends.” Meriam hurried to her feet, catching Sabrina gently by the arm.

Sabrina turned back around to address her, tears falling from her eyes as she blinked repeatedly. “Meriam, I’ve been a little pushy. I know that and you have every right to hate me.” Sabrina sobbed quietly, wiping off her tears. “Oh, I feel so stupid! In fact, no… no lets not embarrass our friendship with this kind of talk. You have to go. You’re holding up Mer’de.”

Meriam felt uncomfortable. She shifted weight awkwardly, not knowing what to say or how to react. She was beginning to regret saying anything to start with.

Sabrina spoke firmly into her PDD wristwatch. #Mer’de, Meriam’s set and ready. Can you cope with her return luggage?#

#Affirmative. Confirm when ready Angel#

“Sabrina… please. I…” Meriam was becoming dizzy under a whirlwind of emotions. She felt disheartened, sad and guilty. Her stomach tightened and her face knotted. Tears escaped down her cheek. “I… I…”

#Angel? Confirm when ready# Mer’de pressed, unaware. #Angel?# His voice sounded synthetic over the radio.

Sabrina broke eye contact with Meriam and turned her back, retreating across the sandy banks of the lake into the sunset.

“God” Meriam whispered. “What have I just done?”

#Recalling in five…# Mer’de counted, a gentle wind lifted the small pebbles under Meriam’s feet.

#Four#

Sabrina stopped walking.

#Three#

She turned around.

#Two#

The girls made eye contact across the lake. Sabrina smiled warmly and whispered a message.

#One#

“I love you”

Thanks Jay, you've been so supportive through this project. I've got parts 8, 9 and finally 10 all mapped out in my head. Bit busy RL at the moment though. They'll take shape soon enough.
