Failure - by Inago
------------------

Kyo slowly opened his eyes. The world around him slowly began to take focus. A large spider scurried past his nose on the straw mat he called a bed. The boy didn't flinch or try to move away from it. He just lay there and silently observed it untill it wandered out of sight under a nearby table. Sunbeams poked their way through the rotting wooden walls of the shed. This building had seen better days.

Kyo struggeled to roll himself onto his back. Weary muscles, as well as the thick rope binding his hands together made it painfully difficult. He ignored the discomfort. His hands were bound a few weeks ago as part of his training. The words of his sensei swirled around his head, "Hands were weak and greedy, snatching anything they desire. The feet and legs are to be trusted for they carry you through life." Those words had been spoken many times and would never be easily forgotten.

Pushing himself into a sitting position, Kyo stretched his legs out infront himself. He took a deep breath and almost wretched. He was sitting in his own waste. His own filth. Having your hands tied meant that some tasks were impossible. A full bladder just had to be emptied. No shame, no worries... it had to be done. A half eaten apple lay nearby on the dusty floor. He awkwardly repositioned himself onto his knees and shuffled towards it, trying to take bites from an object that had the habit of rolling away.

After a few minutes of stuggling with his food, the door to the building was flung open. Almost flying off the rusted hinges. A tall, muscular silouette of a man blocked most of the doorway, torrents of light flooding past him through any availible gap.

"It's time, young one. Your twelth birthday and first real task." Kyo squinted, trying to see more clearly, but the bright light made it hard. "Take these clothes. Today you will kill." The man tossed some fresh clothing over the child's face and stepped forwards, taking a knife from his belt and cutting the bindings off the little guys wrists. "Now get dressed."

The moon glistened in the night sky. It's glow illuminated the tops of the trees. Kyo moved between the branches effortlessly, dressed in his loose, black clothing. A mask covering the bottom half of his face. He was no longer a boy, but a killing machine. Inago...The human grasshopper. Trained warrior and assassin, with power beyond any normal human being.

The destination lay ahead. A small walled settlement with guards posted at the gate. Inago creeped around through the foliage until he reached the back wall, out of sight of the sentries. He closed his eyes and listened with his superior senses. Every leaf falling from a tree, every insect's footstep could be detected. He took a moment to focus on his target. A short, fat and unhealthy man, snoring loudly like an ox. He was just on the other side of this wall, in the largest structure. So close... The man in question was a loan shark. A greedy man who took pleasure in torturing and killing anyone who couldn't pay him back. This man deserved to die.

Inago's eyes sprung open and he sprinted towards the wall, leaping over it with a wondrous grace. Almost ghost like in movement. He seemed to float for a moment or two before lightly touching down the building roof on the opposite side of the wall. So quiet that a pin dropping on a stone floor would drown out the noise.

Although fairly modern, the building had old fashined features like a build in fire place. The chimney was nearby and the lack of smoke showed that nothing was burning. Inago approached the side of it and peered in. The width wouldn't support the size of a full grown man, but he was still a child. A small one at that. Inago hopped onto the top and gripped onto the sides with his hands, lowering himself down into the darkness.

This was too easy. Only one security camera in the main room. Avoided and deactivated within a minute. The only guards were patrolling outside and stationed at the gateway. Nothing was standing in his way now. He made his way down a short corridoor and cautiously opened the door on the right. From the sounds, this was definatly the right one. Inago's sensitive nose picked up the sent of alcohol... Sake. This man was drunk. He wouldn't be waking up anytime soon. He wouldn't ever be waking up.

Inago slid a small blade out from underneath his belt, holding it delicately in his right hand as if it were a flower and not an instrument of death. He approached the side of the bed where the man slept, lifting his arm in preparation for the strike. He whispered quietly with a cold voice "Zama miro." and brought the dagger down with one fluid motion, slashing the mans throat and injecting venom into his bloodstream. One desperate gasp for air and the body fell silent. The deed was done.

After confirming the kill, Inago left the room. He shimmyed back up the chimney and onto the roof. He had to get out without being detected. Easily done. He'd go back the way he came, over the wall and through the forest.

A piercing scream destroyed his train of thought. His eyes scanned the area for the source and he quickly found what he was looking for. A young girl, possibly nine or ten was being dragged along by two guards. From the tattered green dress and shackles it was obvious she was a slave, taken as payment from someone without money. One of the guards turned and struck the girl with his fist, forcing her to the ground where she curled up into a ball. Her cries of fear forced Inago to pay attention. He couldn't ignore this.

The guards pulled the girl to her feet and turned towards the closest building. The slimmest of the two almost leapt out of his skin as the entrance was blocked by a short figure, shrouded by black cloth. Inago spoke harshly, his anger apparant. "Mise mono ja nai yo!" The second guard released his grip of the girl and replied. "Are!" The girl froze and stared with wide eyes. Both guards were approaching Inago, guns drawn. He stood there, hands by his side, unthreatened. "Name'n ja ne."

The men opened fire, pistols blazing as bullets cut through the air. Inago lept to the side, dodging before using his powerful legs to push himself in their direction. He hit the first man before he could pull the trigger a second time, bones cracking and crunching under the force of a kick to the chest. Before his partner could react his neck was snapped by a follow through attack by Inago's left foot. They collapsed, dead.

The young girl was standing perfectly still, paralised by shock. Inago took her hands gently and spoke in a soft and calm way."Do kashiteru." She simply nodded, unable to say a word. He gently picked her up in both his arms and started towards the closest wall. More guards had poured out into the yard, guns pointed at the two children. They fire multiple vollies as Inago jumped right over the perimeter and disappeared into the undergrowth.

After what seemed like miles, Inago stopped running. He put the girl down gently and removed his mask. The killer within him had left and he was Kyo once again. Something was wrong... blood... so much blood. The girl wasn't breathing, her skin like ice. One of the bullets had hit her and taken her life almost instantly. He hadn't noticed. His adreneline had kept him going and she died in his arms. He felt disgusted with himself and guilty that this had happened. He had meant to save her... If he had left her behind she would have still been alive. No! It wasn't his fault! They killed her! Those filthy scum! "Kuso o taberu na!"

A piece of green material had come loose from the sleeve of the girls dress. Inago picked it up and folded it into a strip before wrapping it around his head as a bandana, a symbol of his new task. He would seek vengeance for the girl. They had to die too. The rivers would run red with their blood.
