Yeah if this is possible would love to know how.
It is possible, but if I recall correctly, only on objects from the "desks" menu. Or that menu with most of the tables on it. You cant put stuff to some of the counters.
How to do it: Choose your table or desk, pick up the little object you wish to place, walk close, and rotate your view downwards (middle/right mouse button and rotate I believe). Now aim the little item so that it coincides with the grid of the table. Should work. The catch is indeed that you cant put stuff on some of the tables regardless how obvious it looks. Try basic white table at first.

I had this when making the Sanity Inc Bar 
Had to search through the entire list just to find a desk that would take the bottles and stuff on top of it. Think it was one of the small brown ones in the end.

Suprisingly many of the desks now accept stuff on top of them, its just the aiming process thats hard. Rotating view so that you are looking directly down at the table helps immensely.
Just like the telepads that seem unclickable until you rotate view downwards.
I have been told, that it is possible to place little items, such as bottles and books in top of tables and such. However, i havent been ablo to do that, so if some1 could be a kind soul, and tell me how is that done.
