((Part 1))

“I’ll see you tomorrow Harv.”
Tragically, I suppose you will. “Good night Professor – have a safe journey.”

The Professor stopped at the door and looked back at his assistant. “Are you sure you’ll be okay locking up tonight?”
Why no, how could a mere assistant possibly accomplish the insurmountable task of locking doors and activating alarms? Why it would take some kind of genius professor to accomplish such a feat! “Don’t worry Professor, I’ll be fine.”

The Professor smiled kindly. The assistant smiled back, but it couldn’t really be described as a kind smile; it was more of a smirk really. He looked beyond the Professor towards the exit, as if trying to will the man out the door. “Good night Harv.”

Even after the Professor had left, Harvey stood motionless, watching the laboratory door until he heard the outer doors shut. Even then he stayed motionless for a minute or two as he cleared his thoughts. He proceeded into an adjoined lab, and then to a secure door, complete with card slot and numeric keypad. Harvey calmly produced a plain white card and inserted it into the machine, before tapping in an eight-digit code. The lock clicked open. Harvey sighed, before opening the door and entering the lab beyond.

The computer was on. It was always on – churning out results, doing the Professors secret work. Harvey observed the display, its light ominously illuminating the man’s face. Soon. He’s come so far, so quickly – he really is something special. He chuckled to himself as he thought of the costume designs he’d seen on a previous visit, and the names – the ridiculous and meticulous research, the notes and cross-references. My dear Professor – so you want to save the world? Such heroic nonsense.

((part 2))

I. Am. Power! The shattered remains of a brilliant scientist on the pavement is just the sort of thing you need to attract the attention of the police. This wasn’t something Harvey knew from prior experience, but it was a pretty fair assumption.

The police surrounded the research facility. Irrelevant. Harvey made his grand entrance, rising up from the facility, a bright green haze surrounding and permeating his body. He looked down on the police below and smiled. A self-satisfied smile. A malicious smile. They barked orders at him. He ignored them, smelling the air, tainted by his own aura. Glorious! A beam of energy projected from his hand towards the officer barking at him through a megaphone. Watching him and those near him flee warmed his heart. But then it all went wrong. A streak of ice crushed into his chest from above, sending him hurtling towards the ground. Although he regained his composure quickly enough to slow his descent and begin a horizontal momentum, he couldn’t avoid crashing into the ground. After rolling onto his back, he saw his assailant, a machine? Armour most likely. His attacker was promptly joined in the air by a blonde woman wearing a gayly coloured outfit. Heroes... As Harvey shook off his concussion and rose to his feet, it occurred to him that three others had teleported nearby. Looking around, they’d already surrounded him. Looking back at the blonde woman, he recognised her as Paragon Titan.
“Stand down, sir. We can help you.” Titan.
“Help me?! I don’t need your help! I don’t want your help! I’ve transcended the human condition, I am a God!” Nuclear energy poured explosively from Harvey’s body, forcing the heroes away.
“I’m sorry sir.” He looked up to see Paragon Titan clench her fist. Her face looked as expressionless as anything he’d ever seen at a poker table, and then she descended rapidly, her fist glowing ever-brighter, she arced to level up with the ground and cracked the unfortunate Harvey across the face with a blow that could only be described as half-hearted. He crumpled to the ground several yards down the road.

Young Harvey woke up inside some form of containment suit. Looking around, he was being held in some kind of radiation-shielded room. Looking out of the small window on his door, the prison guards were also wearing containment suits. All this for me? How long have I been unconscious? Of course it wasn’t just for him. It was a section of the Ziggurat dedicated to the containment of radiation-wielding inmates.
“Get comfortable son – you’re going to be here for a loooong time.” The containment suit obscured the guards face, but Harvey was sure the man was smirking.

((part 3))

It’s gonna be a bumpy night! Harvey heard the first explosion over an hour ago. Alarms have been blaring almost as long. The explosions, the ruckus of inmates, security and... military? They were all getting closer. Finally the door at the end of the corridor blasted open. The guards were quickly neutralised by the invading forces.

When Harvey’s door was opened and he was led into the corridor, he saw all the other prisoners, each with an identical containment suit. As one tried to tear the suit off himself, the soldier closest clubbed him with the butt of his rifle. He motioned for a subordinate to carry the unconscious form out. Before he knew it, Harvey was aboard some kind of hi-tech plane, in the air, heading to “Mercy Island. Arachnos could use people like you.”

In no time at all, they’d reached their destination, a fortified facility on Mercy Island. The inmates were split up and taken to a waiting room. Those that could control their powers, only emitting radiation when and how they chose, were provided clothing, and were even offered a costume tailored to their personal tastes. Harvey couldn’t. “I thought the process was finished. The Professor had made notes about some final tests, but it was essentially done. Perfected. I guess not.”
“Evidently.” The scientist was cold, uncaring. “This way.”
Those that couldn’t effectively control their powers were subjected to further tests, and consulted over the construction of a containment suit. The resources being provided were not without cost, these Arachnos types made it very plain that Harvey was indebted to them, and failure to live up to their expectations would be... ill-advised.
After a couple of nights staying in a room not unlike the cell he occupied in the Zigg, Harvey’s containment suit was ready, built to his design. Light but durable armour, sophisticated electronics, air filters – the works. Beautiful. Hello Mercy Island.
Harvey walked out of the facility to see his fate. Would they come to know his name? Harvey? No, that’s not right; how about ‘The Transcendent’?
