Paragon Elite vs. Easy Breezy

The Test Ladder has been in a state of upheaval since Issue 12. With a myriad of changes to PvP, many groups have left and a malaise gripped the ladder for several months as well. While many of the changes were greeted with dismay, many groups of die-hards persisted with the Ladder while changing their line-ups and strategies.

Currently, teams engage in a five vs. five format to reflect smaller rosters and ease of fielding five-person teams. The Arena settings selected until recently were No Diminishing Returns and No Travel Suppression. This led to strict line-ups of Stalkers, Thermals and an Empathy Controller/Defender. Since then, a vote has been taken and No Travel Suppression, Diminishing Returns enabled and No Heal Decay are the current preferred settings.

Through it all, challenges are being made. On June 4th, Paragon Elite and Easy Breezy engaged on the Ladder, which currently has The Renegades in the top spot. This tilt would prove interesting as new settings have been added to the Arena, including a "Sudden Death" setting when ties are present at the end of a match as well as a rolling "count" of how many kills are needed for a team to win. Additionally, badges have returned to the Arena and are awarded for winning various match types. A time indicator has also been added, going off at the 20 second mark.

Paragon Elite vs. Easy Breezy looked to be interesting if only because both teams contained a nice mix of vets and newer Test PvPers adapting their strategy to the new settings. Paragon Elite/Rogue Elite are led by @Betamax while Easy Breezy is led by @Infamous. The former originated on Triumph Server and did quite well on the former Hero Ladder, while the latter has players originating from Justice Server.

Present in Pocket D was Curious Observer; the new PvP Dev. Curious was busy fielding questions about crashes, some buggy powers and many other variant on the aspect of Arena PvP.

The matches started about 9:30 pm EDT on June 4.
Shadowfade by Juggertha

Easy Breezy held the fourth spot on the ladder and Paragon Elite third, so a win by Easy would vault them into third place.

Match One opened in the Crey lab map. Easy fielded a Dominator, a Sonic Corruptor, an Empathy Controller, a Rad/Psy Defender and a Stalker while Paragon Elite brought an Inv/SS Tanker, two Defenders and two Stalkers.

The first kill was not long in coming, as Tehplayerxz defeated Firi's Unbanned Emp at the nine-minute mark. Paragon Elite was far from done, however, as Evil Mystery (a Stalker) defeated Check the Technique, Infamous- and TehPlayerxz at the 8:20, 6:30 and 3:20 marks respectively. There was a ton of back and forth in the side hallways of the Lab around the 3:00 mark, as people rebuffed, healed and evaded with all their power.

Lethal Injection (Stalker) added another for Paragon Elite at the 2:40 mark against Rawrbot (Dominator) while TehPlayerxz nabbed Fir's Unbanned Emp at the 2:00 mark for a 4-2 Paragon Elite victory!

Sadly, this is as stable as the Arena terminal got for the evening. The next two matches were plagued with disconnects and crashes but both teams persevered to the end.

Match Two opened in Perez Park. Easy Breezy changed things up, bringing a VEAT (Fortunata) and Blaster to their previous line-up. Paragon Elite remained largely with the same line-up.

Infamous got two quick kills against Lethal Injection and Evil Mystery on his Rad/Psy early on, then disconnected around the 5:00 mark, suspended in the air in the lake area of the Perez Map. Xz80 (Blaster) scored another kill on Lethal Injection and Easy Breezy moved to a 5-1 win over Paragon Elite, leaving the match to be won in a third and deciding game.

Match Three was notable for a series of crashes and resets. Easy Breezy lost a Blaster early on in the Siege Map. The teams then loaded into the Monkey Cage and reset. Another crash required a third reset. Finally, both teams loaded into the Steel Canyon map. Paragon Elite ended up down a player due to a disconnect at the midway point. Easy Breezy would score the only kill with Funk Nasty defeating Fugacity at the 5:00 mark.

Easy Breezy moved to third on the Ladder in a series of matches with disconnects, resets, crashes and lots of good fighting.

Betamax, Paragon Elite's leader, was kind enough to give us a few words on the state of the current PvP scene in the Training Room:

"The first thing that I would like to touch upon is the comments I hear from some people implying that the new PvP system makes PvP too easy. I know there have been a lot of changes, and that the new system needs some work, but personally, I feel that whenever you fight a team that knows what they are doing and wants to win just as badly as you do, it will never be easy. Some even say that 5v5 teams just aren't as complex or challenging as 8v8 teams, but I find it challenging to build a team properly, since you have less to work with. Instead of an individual being responsible for an 8th of the team, they are now responsible for a 5th. It can be tough to make a well-rounded team with only 5 characters to choose from.

"On that note, I must say that I was rather impressed with the two team configurations fielded by Easy Breezy in our recent match. They were thinking outside of the box, and showed that there is more than one option for an effective team, if one is willing to be creative. More than likely the ladder will go to a "diminishing returns" format in the near future, and creativity will be even more important.

Polpettino by Liz/syrusb

"As far as the future of PvP goes, I feel much more optimistic after my chat with the developer who watched our match Thursday. He told me that he could, of course, only speak for himself, but that working on PvP was one of the things that brought him here, and that making a system that worked properly and is fun to play was very important to him. He reiterated what he has said before, that the current system isn't perfect, but that it is a work in progress and that it takes time to get it right and also that he is indeed listening to the community. He seemed very sincere, and I feel that his actions, such as reaching out to the community, are further proof of his dedication to the cause.

"Lastly, some have said that the current ladder is nothing compared to its former selfÂ… well, I see it as a new beginning. And with every new beginning, there are always obstacles to overcome. If we can hold on while PvP gets some more polish, and make sure there is still a PvP ladder for others to join when the time comes, I feel that it will be worth it. Until next time, good luck and have fun!"

There you have it folks, there is still some good PvP to be had in the Training Room. Some of the teams may have openings for new or returning players, so check out some scrimmages on Thursday evenings in Pocket D.

The PvPEC is always running events across the live servers. The Pinnacle PvP League is building up momentum toward a late June start. Your messenger is looking forward to what type of team can be built with XFunk and James Donner against the varied opposition there is sure to be present.

Until next time, good luck and have fun! See you in the Arena!

Under the Hood: Fighting AVs

Part 4 - Damage

This is the fourth article in a series about fighting Arch-Villains (AVs) and similar class mobs. These are some of the most difficult mobs in the game. They have a HUGE number of Hit Points (HP), and they Regenerate those HP pretty fast. You want to do as much damage as fast as you can to take them down. I'll discuss building your character to do just that.

I talked about Regeneration in Part Two of this series. Your average level 50 AV Regenerates about 94 HP a second. If you're lucky enough to have a decent Regeneration Debuff in your Primary or Secondary power set, then you can bring that down to 24 HP a second - MUCH EASIER! If not, you'll want to tweak your build to put out as much damage as possible.

Obviously, you have to hit in order to do damage, and you want to do that 95% of the time. That's pretty easy against most even level AVs, but not all. AVs can have Defense and Damage Resistance buffs along with their Purple Triangles of Doom (PToD). Some also have Elude, Overload, or similar Tier 9 defense powers they activate when at 25% of their HP. Start by slotting your attacks well for Accuracy, and getting Accuracy in IO Set bonuses. You may need Leadership: Tactics, the unique Karma: +6% ToHit IO, and Accuracy Inspirations to get through Elude or equivalent. Go to your Combat chat tab and make sure you have the Hit Rolls channel enabled, and look at it if you start missing a lot. Most AVs have strong Defense Debuff Resistance in their PToD power, so Defense Debuffs like those in Hack and Slash for Broadsword Scrappers won't do much.

If you want to do a lot of damage, the most important thing is to use your best attacks. Use Mid's Hero Planner, check out City of Data, or check out the "Detailed Info" tab of your attack powers in game. You want to use powers with a high Damage per Activation Time (DPA). In other words, divide the total damage by the time it takes to use the power (Animation or Activation time, depending on where you look). For example, Psychic Blast Defenders will want to use TK Blast and Will Domination more than Mental Blast or Subdue. Once you've identified your best powers, find an attack chain that uses them as often as possible.

Now comes the big balancing act. You want to slot your main attack powers for damage, say around the effective cap of 96%. You want some Accuracy, but you may be able to skimp a bit on it if you can get a decent global Accuracy bonus from set IOs. You'll want Recharge so you can use your best attacks as often as possible, but again you can get this from set IOs. You can also work backwards if you have an attack chain in mind, and figure out how much Recharge you need in each power to make it work. And you'll run out of Endurance if you ignore it, so you better slot for it too. Note that the END cost of a power is generally based on damage, so higher DPA powers means higher END per Second (EPS).

If you have any slots left over in your attacks, add IO Procs that do damage. These are things like Mako's Bite: Chance for Lethal Damage. Regular procs add on average about 14 points of damage, while purple damage procs add 35. My general advice is to use five IOs from a set that gives you global Recharge Reduction (Decimation, Crushing Impact, or Positron's Blast), and add a Proc IO in slot six. If you can get purple IOs, you'll want to put them in your most frequently used powers.

Heart-Break
by Liz/syrusb

One great way to increase your damage is to debuff Damage Resistance. If you can debuff Resistance by 20%, that means you're effectively doing 20% more damage with everything you do. AVs can resist these debuffs if they have any Damage Resistance, but that's usually fairly low. If an AV with 25% Smashing Resistance is hit by a 20% Resistance Debuff, it will only debuff their Smashing Resistance by 15%. So it's always a good idea to use Resistance Debuffs if you have them in your power sets. And if you have any powers that accept Defense Debuff IO sets, I recommend slotting an Achilles' Heel: Chance for Resistance Debuff. It has a 20% chance to debuff Resistance by 20% for 10 seconds every time you use it.

If you want to try fighting some AVs, or even soloing them, try out my "Level 50 AV Challenge" arc #168611 in the Mission Architect. It has every AV available in the MA spread out over three missions. Try rebuilding your character using some of the info from above, and see if you can take down any AVs. In the next few articles, I'll go over a few builds I have that can solo AVs. If you have any characters that can solo AVs, I'd like to hear about them.

The Price of Fame

In the Offices of Paragon PD's Department 13, Paranormal Division; Captain James Harris picks up his phone and places the call he has been dreading.

In an abandoned-looking office building, in a rundown section of Mercy Island, an infrequently used payphone comes to life:

Riiiiing-Riiiiing... Riiiiing-Riiiiing... Riiiiing-Riii

Yeah, whatcha want?

Hello Stevie.

Hahahaaaa! How'd you find me this time bro? I don't usually give contact info to the people I'm kicking inna head. And how many times have I told you to stop calling me Stevie? It's Snake to anyone I care to introduce myself to.

Well, Stevie, I think I've earned the right to call you whatever I want after all the times I've pulled your butt out of the fire.

Jimmy, you can take all those times an' shove'em. I'm my own man now bro and I don't need you watching over me anymore. Got it?!

Mom asked about you, so I pulled a few strings here in Paragon PD and got a number to your, ahem, hide out.

Yeah, well ma always cared too much didn't she? Well, you can tell her, her baby boy is doin' jus' fine I don't need her to worry about me. I got friends in high places now. I'mma rising star 'round these parts. If you think I'm lying check the paper today. I think I got an honorable mention, hahahaaa, or whatever you wanna call it when they print your name inna story about a Kings Row bank gettin' filched.

Now Stevie don't make me come get you. I'd really rather not, but you know I can, if I need to. You're not the only one with "high-up" connections.

Hahahaaaa! Is that so bro? I heard they put you in charge of something or the other at the PPD after you came out and admitted having, well, let's just call it an unusual experience in one of Arachnos' labs a few months back. Seems you're some kinda tank now or do the brains down at the Portal Labs have another name for you freaks?

Look Stevie, I would rather not talk about what happened to me, I'm more concerned with you, and the crowd you've been running with; mom and I both are. Blowing up buildings, robbing banks here in Paragon City; none of this would have happened if you would have stayed here and not decided to move out to the Rogue Isles.

No, Jimmy. I know you and ma might have thought that I was gonna be some kind of scientist or whatever jus' because I could take a test. Having an IQ of 225 jus' made me more of an outcast. Hahahaaaa; kinda like you now, "Mr. Tanker, Sir!" Ahahahaaa! Let me tell ya somethin' bro, I never liked being in your shadow and I never wanted what you and ma thought was best for me. Since I came here, I have been living the life bro. I know guys - high-up guys that look for me to do things that only I can get done. As for the crowd I hang with, those are my boyz. They look up to me and they got my back.

You're living in a dream world Stevie. I just hope you don't wake up to find it was all really a nightmare; for both you and the people that really care for you.

Bro, anytime you think you can come and take me back - Hahahaaaa! Man I crack myself up sometimes. Whenever you want to try and show me the error of my ways and make me walk the straight and narrow, you just set a time and I'll meet ya, Jimmy boy. We could have a "talk" in Bloody Bay or maybe over in Sirens Call and you can try to "convince" me. I jus' don't think you got it in you bro - Paragon PD or no Paragon PD. You make the call, but I never go anywheres without my boyz, you just keep that in mind "Captain Harris." Look, this conversation is over. Nice hearin' from ya bro. Just you think twice if you want to make this a real life reunion. Hahahaaaaa! I'm not little Stevie anymore, got it? I'm Snake Harris and people are gonna know my name whether you like it or not bro. Peace Jimmy

'CLICK'

bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Stevie? Steven? Damn it!

Captain Harris had nothing left but to put his head down, glancing at the document on his desk. It's a new "Paragon's Most Wanted" list that he received today. Steven "Snake" Harris, his little brother, is the #3 name. Tears streak the crisp paper, the words and pictures blurring with the unwanted wetness.

Muttering to himself, Captain Harris could choke out only, "Happy Birthday Stevie - you're famous."

MArc My Words

MArc #14044: "Quest for the Coral Horn"

by @Bishop Creed (Bishop_Creed)

4 Missions

Heroic

Levels 1-54, 40-48, and 40-47

Difficulty: High (4)

Pacing: Quick (4)

Storytelling: Moderate (3)

Replay Value: None (0)

Mood: McGuffin Retrieval

Canonicity: Expansion

MArc Rating: 3 stars

Before I go into my review I'm going to state now: My 0 rating for replay value is due entirely to the use of the Legend of Ruladak map of Tyrant's Rock used in the third mission. I personally hate the map with a passion due to the extremely limited visibility. Without that map, I'd be rating replay value a 3, bringing the arc average up to a 4.

The Horn of Merulina is supposedly able to revive the Coralax goddess from her deep slumber. As this type of legend goes, such an act would generally grant the person who performed the resurrection some sort of boon. In "Quest for the Coral Horn", some innocent fisherman have discovered Merulina's Horn, which is quickly stolen by pirates, and sold off to Arachnos. This is, obviously, a Very Bad Thing™.

Bishop Creed has been following the movements of the Shadow Pirates for some time, led by a Netherworld-powered pirate named Black Hook. Some of the dialogue in the arc plays the characters as idiots - from Creed not realizing that pirates sending you to Arachnos could have possibly been a trap; to Hugo telling you exactly where to find Black Hook; to Black Hook telling you everything about the plan and where Barracuda is; to Captain Mako telling you exactly what his part in the devious plot is. I'd love to live in the world presented in this MArc; as soon as the most hardened villains are defeated in battle, they'll tell you everything you might possibly want to know.

By the way, the devious plan is quite devious. Barracuda will revive Merulina, who will then infect everyone in the world except for Barracuda and Captain Mako with her magic coral. Which will turn everyone into Coralax Hybrids. Who will then be under Barracuda and Mako's control - quite the shining example of a Thirty Xanatos Pileup.

Okay, okay. While the villains' schemes in this arc aren't the most complex ever devised, that doesn't make it a bad thing. The arc is easy to follow, and offers a decent challenge for those who want one. For those who have trouble against the several EB/AVs in the arc, Bishop Creed twice gives you the aid of his Kin Bot (who is actually extremely helpful unless you don't like Speed Boost and Energy Blast), and during the last mission he send his RAD clone (Illusion Control/Radiation Emission) ahead of you to help.

MArc #174557: "Turg Fiction: Ghost in the Machine, Act II"

by @Turgenev (Turgenev)

Heroic

Levels 40-54 and 25-54

Difficulty: High (4)

Pacing: Quick (4)

Storytelling: Quality (5)

Replay Value: Excellent (5)

Mood: Adventure!

Canonicity: Fan Work

MArc Rating: 5 stars

Disclaimer: I have not played Act I at the time of this writing. Ghost in the Machine Act I is already a Developer's Choice arc, and therefore will not appear in this column.

Digital super heroes, internet nerd Freakshow, black ops, interdimensional Red Caps, and the Illuminati. This arc has it all!

Despite the fact that this is a continuation of an arc that I have not played, it was written in such a way that I was not overly confused, and by the time I had completed the arc, I felt that everything I was missing from not completing the first arc had been filled in for me. That's a very good feature, and I applaud Turgenev for it.

Since the last act of the series, the (quite literally!) holographic contact has become something of a celebrity on the internet, as news of her existence has spread. In predictable City of Heroes style, a cute digital hero being talked about on the internet leads to nerds fans, including Freakshow. Of course, Freakshow aren't know for their subtlety, and the digital disco Dani invites you to a dance with her that has been invaded by both Freaks, as well has some normal human hacker fans. Among great dialogue, you'll have to rescue Dani from her "biggest fan".

The next time you talk to her, Dani has been grounded by Manticore; apparently there's a security hole in the Architect Entertainment system that has drawn the attention of both Crey and some rogue Arachnos. While Dani deals with the technical problem, it's your job to protect the hackers (Portal Corp interns) that had crashed your disco who were targeted through the hole that Dani is fixing.

Some Portal Corp data confiscated from Crey's foiled scorched earth operation shows increased interdimensional activity. That, combined with a Cabal consult, reveals the Red Caps working with the real Illuminati (rather than digital Illuminati which apparently appeared in Act I). They're bringing a demon through to this dimension and it's your job to stop that from happening.

Dani expresses some real depth of character, both lovable and fun, and serious and scared of her current situation. To paraphrase, the arc, she certainly seem real to me.

As a final note, make sure you read the souvenir from this arc! The arc is excellently written, and rather than being a summation of what you've done, the souvenir is an epilogue of sorts. And I imagine it will be of importance in Act III once it becomes available.

In the Scoop

As I was strolling through St. Martial, I suddenly found myself in some forsaken place called Croatoa!! As I stood on the dirt road trying to figure out how the heck I got here, I see skinny vine things with pumpkins for heads walking about!! This is a strange place. Off in the distance I see a huge red barn. I figure there must be someone there that can tell me how to get back to my side of the world.

I hoof it to the big ol' barn and I don't really see anything, at first. But then as I start to look at some of the finer details, I see that someone has painted things with pictures and images. I see a very large wash tub with a cute painting of a platypus on it. I do believe that I have just hit the jackpot! As I step into the barn, I hear someone humming from inside one of the big stalls. I peer into the stall and I see a big ol' sheep! He's all fluffy and woolly, and stuffed into a pair of farmer coveralls. He has paint smudged here and there on patches of his wool and across parts of his coveralls. He has buckets of paint strewn about the stall and a big paint brush in his hand. He obviously hasn't heard me walk in as he hasn't stopped humming and wiggling his cropped tail about while he paints the wall of the big stall.

I accidentally kick over a bucket which startles him and causes him to leap and loudly shout out, "BAAAAA-AA-A-A-A-AAA!!". He looks at me with his eyes all big and his nostrils all flared out. "What the hay?!!!", he snorts at me. I laugh as I introduce myself. He laughs and says, "Darn it girl! You gave me a lot more curl with that scare tactic of yours!" I apologize and explain to him that I was some how pulled into this strange place. He says to me, "Oh, by the way, my name is Lousy Day, or LD for short. I see that you are, um, a villain?!!" I saw that he was starting to back away from me, and then he suddenly trips backwards over a bucket of paint. I start laughing and he says to me "BAH! Now look what you made me do!" We both laugh so hard we start snorting like piggies. As I help LD get all cleaned up, I ask him if he wouldn't mind sharing some of his art work with me.

I ask LD how long he has been a member of the City of Heroes family. He thinks for a moment and sheepishly says, "Oh, for exactly 57 months which makes me an olddddd sheep!". I giggle and ask him about some of his early work. LD says to me, "I never really considered myself artistic - it was after college that I got into drawing. I guess I could have been artistic if I had the desire when I was young. I started playing the violin when I was like 5, but not by choice. I played it for years but never improved much because I absolutely hated practicing. Same story with piano. I did like building spaceships with Legos , and I think I drew some cars with crayons when very young. I didn't engage in a lot of artistic activities once I was in school, though. The thing with me is, I can't be forced into doing something and do well. Ironically, music became my passion in college, and that is when I came to the bitter realization that I should have practiced hard when I was young."

With curiosity, I ask LD if he has any favorite CoX pieces that he has completed. LD motions for me to follow him up the ladder to the hay loft. But instead of there being stacks of hay bales, there are pails of paint and brushes every where sitting on top of a huge tarp that has been spread out across the wood floor. On the walls, there are awesome looking murals. LD smiles brightly and says, "I have two. First is Comrade Hero and Graviton Girl. Personally, it is a monumental piece for me. I wanted to see what I could do, and I stretched myself in every way. I remember the sketch alone took 20+ hours to get where I was happy with the composition, anatomy and details. Painting the piece took even longer, because I had to study what colors look like under certain lighting conditions. Do you see the blue in Graviton Girl's costume and the US flag? It is not blue, but actually red with lower saturation. (You can use a color picker in a painting software to verify this.) Our eyes perceive it as blue because of highly saturated reds around it.

The other one is my winning entry for the April Fan Art Battle.

Ever since I got into drawing, light has been a subject of interest to me. So maybe it was only natural that I became fascinated by stained glass too, since it is totally dependent on light for expression. My favorite view of a stained glass is with the sun directly behind. It is when you can see thousands of glittering particles dance around you, and it is a sight I never get tired of."

I look at the stained glass piece that LD has strategically placed in the high window above the barn doors. It is a large piece that looks awesome as the sun shines through it, reflecting the colors about the barn floor and walls. LD is quite proud of this piece as he should be!

I ask LD where he gets his creative inspiration from. He smiles that big sheepish smile and says to me, "Like most other artists will tell you, everything around you. What we know interferes with what we see, so you need to be observant and look around you with a curious eye, as if you have never seen it before. Sky is blue, and the grass is green....but are they really? For specific things that interest me, I love concept art and speed-paintings some people do. Doing studies from movie scenes is a good exercise. I have a growing collection of books with pretty covers. Well, I judge a book by its contents too, but since most of books I buy are filled with pictures of things I am interested in, such as castles, cathedrals, animals, nature, etc., they usually have a cool cover too."

LD continues on and says, "My last big piece was my entry for the May Fan Art Battle. It is apparent from looking at my previous paintings that I don't know how to paint clouds. I decided it was time I rectified my pitiful excuses for clouds. I have been doing a lot of cloud studies lately in preparation for my May entry. I am hoping this will be a turning point, and from now on, clouds will be one of my strengths instead of being a subject I avoid."

I really like LD's work and wanted to know if he does commissions, so when I ask him, he turns to me and says, "Yes, unofficially. I have been available since I did my piece for Comrade Hero, but I just never announced it officially. I have been waiting for something to happen in me first I guess, to be fully satisfied with my skills as an artist before I start taking commissions. I am just now beginning to realize it is like chasing the rainbow. I don't have an official pricing as of yet, but if someone approaches me with an idea and a reasonable reward, I am all up for it."

I decide to ask LD if he has anything he wishes to share with the City Scoop readers. LD thinks for a moment and then says with a big smile, "I would like to thank my fellow animals in Barnyard Heroes and Antarctic Family on Victory. I have teamed with them daily for years. If it wasn't for them, I would have ended up on someone's dinner table a long time ago.

And thanks Vex so much for giving me this opportunity to show some of my works! I really appreciate it. The City Scoop may use any of my pieces for their articles if they would like to."

I was pleasantly surprised to have such an interesting and enjoyable time in the land of the heroes. Now if I can only figure out how to get back home!
