I lived there (Tempe) for a year and a half, and the schizophrenic nature of "we're Mountain, no, now we're Pacific" was one of the most annoying things about living there, especially when I was trying to coordinate playing with East Coast folks.

Loose --> not tight.
Lose --> Did not win, misplace, cannot find, subtract.
One extra 'o' makes a big difference.
