Need some help here with my download speed
Having the same problem using cable, Left my computer on for 10 hours while I was away and still have 1.7gb to go...
This is no fun
Same issue...
Every sort of download I get 1mb 1,5mb per second (18mbit connection)
from torrents, newsgroups, IE/FF downloads, other MMO patches...
EXCEPT this COH one! 20kb/s is all.
by the time I installed it, the free weekend will be over.
Shame, been thinking about returning for a while, this would be the perfect time, but I guess I won't be
I spent 23 hours to get all 2.7 gb dl and then there was an error and now it started over with the fixing processs which is another 2.2 gb and another 20 hours...
any chance on another free weekend to make up for this failed free weekend... if you make it in about a month from now, I should have everything dl'd
or this could just be a ploy... pretend to give us a dl of patches from a fresh install of the orig coh cd... watch us get totally frustrated trying to dl and go spend $20 for the latest dvd...
Well I checked back in, only 600mb to go, should be done sometime tomorrow I guess.
Sad that my first impression of the game was how cool it looked and I wanted to start playing with my friend. Now I feel like I HAVE to finish patching just so I didn't waste all this time and the game seems less appealing by the minute.
Seems everything else runs at reasonable speeds just this updater going at 20kb/s.
Anyway, I think I will make a villain called "The Updater" and torture endless people...
There is only one update server. Lots of people have been downloading because of lack of planning. Every time a new major release comes out all the old subscribers get an invite back and a bunch of other people get free trials.
That said, changing the updater shortcut to
CohUpdater.exe" -port 13094
Will usually speed things up.
Don't count your weasels before they pop dink!
Quick Reply:
I don't claim to understand the rationale behind the problem, but I may have a fix, as I had a similar problem several months ago.
Add "-port 13094" as a flag for the CohUpdater. For example, the Target line for the COH shortcut on my desktop currently reads:
"C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe" -port 13094
There was a redname post about this that I would recommend searching for if you want further details. Like I said, I don't know exactly why this works, but apparently it forces the updater to use a different port.
I had never had a problem with the updater before, then suddenly before the last 2xp weekend the updater started to crawl at a few KPS. This fixed it for me. Good luck, ymmv.

hm ill give this a try and report back...
Ok doing this works it seems, I quit the updater then placed a shortcut of the updater on my desktop, then I did as it says above and started the updater then it jumped from 30 kb/s to 120 kb/s which is definitely better. So Thanks you guys and I hope this helps everyone else as well.
Alright so the updater has been going at 30kb/s for the last couple of hours. Which I would say is extremely slow for a DSL connection. It usually downloads at 250kb/s-350kb/s whenever I download anything from firefox etc. So I was wondering if anyone might know how to bring the updater upto speed. I did a search and could not find anything so any help is appreciated. Thanks.
