Since I saw a lot of stories posted here I thought I might aswell post mine too. Let me know what you think please.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fate, destiny, heritage, chance or just plain cruelty on someone else’s part. Who knows what makes a person decide to become a hero. Some people just like to do the right thing, some people don’t know any other way and some people still don’t know why they are doing what they do.
Saya was one of those people. Every day she saw what humanity was capable of. Murder in broad daylight without the smallest piece of regret or guilt, mugging someone without stopping to think what kind of consequence their actions had, she had seen it all. Humans truly where small pieces of scum, and she was one of them.

It really made you think. Why save any of these people? Why risk my life when I know how they truly are? Why stop all those bad things from happening when I know a day later those same bad guys are out on the streets again, doing what they have always done? Why get hurt, when you know it’s a never-ending circle?
Because it’s the right thing to do? Because of hope that things one day might get better? Because it would be even worse to just let it happen? Questions, questions, questions.
Where were the answers?

She didn’t even have any powers. She wasn’t an outcast or from a different planet. Heck, she wasn’t even experimented on. She was just your average Joe…or Jane in this case…who was a bit skilled with blades. Bullets didn’t bounce off her and the only thing that stopped her from getting herself killed over people she didn’t know was a small device on her waist that send her to the hospital. So, back to that question…Why?

She had been in the ‘hero business’ for little over a year now and she still didn’t have an answer, yet it never stopped her from going back out again. The small pieces of gratitude people gave her still annoyed her so that couldn’t be it. Really people, we get it, you are grateful…could you please get lost now? Please? Maybe it was because she liked to kick people’s butt? Nah, as much as that brought a small smile to her face that couldn’t be it. Then she just might as well be a villain. Being the bad guy was easier too, not constantly having to worry about what the consequences of your actions are for example, so that wasn’t it either.
She had been asking herself this from day one and maybe she would never get her answer. But, would she be able to continue doing this if she didn’t know why? Only time would tell.
In the mean time she would just continue taking out the scum she hated, hoping the police would prove her wrong about their intelligence for just once and keep them locked up for more then just a day. And those people actually got paid for being brain-dead! Go figure.
No wonder Paragon City was going to hell.

Luckily the bad guys were mostly just as smart as the people who were supposed to keep them locked up. For instance, right now she was lazily watching a couple of street punks trying to pick a lock on a warehouse. Why? Who cared, probably because the bad guys had something with old abandoned warehouses. You want to be a bad guy? Then go find a warehouse to break in and turn it into your lair, lesson one. Unfortunately for these local street rats a quick lock picking lesson was apparently not included, poor souls. They weren’t having much luck judging from the wide string of curses that flew from their mouths. Lesson number two; If you don’t want to get caught then don’t swing your flashlight around in anger while you curse loudly like a sailor…it tends to attract unwanted attention. [censored]. Lesson number three; look around you once in a while, including up, if your local friendly hero(ine) has been attracted to your location by your cheerful lightshow then you might want a
heads-up.

Like this it was just too easy. She could just jump in, knock them out and be on her merry way before those three even realized what had hit them. She wouldn’t even have to draw the two swords she had strapped on her back. But that was just it, Saya didn’t like easy. She wanted as much challenge as she could, even from lowlifes such as these kids. “You know, if you twist your pin the other way and push up I’m sure you would get a lot further” Her tone was bored but it still had the desired effect. All three ceased their rambling and looked up, shock evident in their eyes…or they could just be ogling her, she wasn’t sure, men were strange creatures. Whatever it was, it took them too long to recover from it. They always did. By the time the first one was able to close his mouth he was already sprawled on the floor, barely conscious from the blow to his head. The other two didn’t take much longer and within a couple of seconds their cursing had turned into moaning and groaning in pain. “You guys are no fun” kneeling by the youngest of the three she sighed sadly. “Care to tell a gall where the big fishies swim or do you want to swim with the other, more lethal fishies? I’m pretty sure they are rather hungry and as a heroine I can’t have that happening, now can I?” For a small moment she was sure the punk was going to wet himself at the thought. She could already see the small, nearly nonexistent wheels in his head turning to be able to understand what she was talking about and when he did fear was all she could see in his eyes. First came confusion, then fear and any minute now…Ah there it was, amusement along with the first two. “You won’t do that, you are one of them good guys. You don’t kill anybody.” She was a bit surprised he was still able to talk so clearly, she was going to have to do something about that, nonetheless this had been an answer she had expected and she could already hear the other two grunt in agreement. This was going to be fun.

“Oh really, what makes you so sure?” For a small moment fear kicked back in fully, but then it switched back to the way it was before. After all, she was a hero. Sure, she didn’t wear spandex pants or bright colors and she didn’t wear her underwear over her pants but she was still a hero nonetheless. Heroes didn’t kill, they would beat you up, toss you in jail and even threaten to kill you but they would never actually end your life. It was just the way it all worked. Villains did the killing and Heroes did the saving. Heroes were above that. Right? “You wouldn’t, you have rules for that don’tcha?” A simple shrug was all it took for them to look at least pale, though they still didn’t wet their pants, but she knew she would get what she wanted. She didn’t even answer his question. “Come on girl, you aren’t gonna kill us right?” A feral grin appeared on her face, probably the only answer all three of them needed and probably the only thing that prevented them from moving was that paralyzing fear and the fact that they still had hope on getting out of it without becoming either shark food or villain food. All that hope vanished with her reply though and she would have enjoyed the look on their faces if the clouds hadn’t moved in front of the moon at just that moment, covering the small group in darkness.

“Are you willing to bet your life on that?”
