Question about a story- how far is too far?

I've got a great idea for a story about one of my new characters, with some other alts of mine making an appearance.
It concerns one of my villains and how they fell from grace- you see, they used to be a hero until something bad happened.

But before I start writing, a question. Just how far are we allowed to go on this board, content-wise?
I'm not going to curse every second word, write stuff that belongs in Penthouse, or describe every act of violence in CSI-like detail. But the story does involve an assassination, and torture. Like I said, I won't describe things in bone-crunching detail- it's more the aftermath that we see. But how far is too far?
I love reading things that people come up with, I want to contribute my own, but don't want to inadvertantly go too far either.

Well, it's a T rated game, so I'd assume the same rule applies to the public boards.

Of course, interpretation of such is sketchy. I would think that it'd still be OK to include that stuff, just don't go into nitty-gritty detail.

*Waits for one of the more experienced RPers to come in here and pick apart my post.* >.>

Exactly what he said is what I think.

Personally, I've been modded on more than a few of my posts for some things releating to that. Yay for describing the many ways to kill a man with a ball-point pen as Thule. It's not like it's nothing we've all seen or heard about before.

I wrote a scene in the Whitmoore thread that had people creeped out, but it was pretty Mod proof because it didn't describe what was going on, so much as focussed on the walls, floors, and nearby furniture. Neighbors hearing screams, etc. Instead of "blood" it was "red dots appeared on the wallpaper". You can get away with quite a bit if you leave most of it up to the imagination.

That which is suggested, and that which is merely hinted at, is a thousand times more terrifying than what certainly is.

I once wrote something that implied one of my characters was about to do something deeply wrong to a Fortunata. It actually sent chills into other players, but it didn't get modded.

Lord, if I could get back to that level of creepiness with that character I'd be so happy. It felt so GOOD writing that, to be able to hate the character so righteously...

How could I lose that dark spark so fast?

In any case, a person's imagination, what with the nightmarish things that already exist in the world, will usually be worse than what you have in mind. However, if you describe the evil event in question, you're likely to get modded.

Look at that. A full-grown woman pulling off pigtails. Her crazy is off the charts.

I doubt you would get modded even for describing grotesque events.

I have never seen it done, and I have seen writing where people get hacked apart or burned alive.

It is in better taste and more effective to suggest what someone does though. Make your audience know what is happening without actually saying exactly what goes on.

Another piece of advice. Don't work around the word filter. People will get what the [censored] you are saying. Working around it will get you modded and I think it comes off as juvenile behavior.

No mod complained when I had a character get outright decapitated and another shredded with machine gun fire. Then again they probably never noticed that part, assuming any ever read the story.

Heh, well, the first RP I played in had a character in it whose entire background was grounded in being a sex slave and seductress, and all the posts involved in that were let stay. Maybe you just have to be lucky to not get modded, but as for me, I think you're fine with anything you want as long as you censor yourself enough that YOU think it'll be okay. And if not, you get a message from a mod and have to change it a bit, no big deal.

Thanks for the responses, everyone
For the worst of the torture and other parts, I plan to describe mainly the aftermath- what the PPD finds afterward. Horrified whispers and rumours, that sort of thing.
If the stuff you guys are describing got through without being modsmacked, I think I'll be fine.
The torture I am referring to is nothing compared to the atrocities that used to be committed in medieval europe- more like mafia goon-stuff.
