Rhett Bhastard - New Kind of Coloring + Shading!

Hey all! I just finished inking/coloring/shading/highlighting Rhett Bhastard, a request I did for my queue. I used a new kind of inking though: Instead of black lines, I used lighter and darker shades of the colors that would be inside. I wanted to see what you guys thought of it.

ALSO, I highlighted and shaded this piece. I think the highlights came out pretty good, but the shading is just WIERD! I was also wondering if people could help me get good shading on him.

Rhett Bhastard

Thanks for looking and for any critiques!!!

Yup! I would pick a bit of a lighter grey, for future reference.

Hmm, okay.

Any comments about placing of the shadows? I think I did an OK job getting that down...

You did a good job on the shadows, yes, but you forgot shadows on the hair, nose, inside of the ear, mouth, and shadows from the hair. (That sounds like a lot more than it actually is. The more shadows done correctly, the more 3-D the piece looks. )

Okay, I'll try that - Thanks

How are the highlights? I like the ones on the eyes, not sure about the skin.. Maybe make them softer, because it wouldn't be so bright on the skin?

The highlights on the skin should be made with a bigger brush, that would make it softer. The eyes are fine, except all the light needs to be coming from the same direction, unless you have two light sources. And I doubt he'd have a light source between his eyes, which is what you have now. XD

In other words, make the eye shine on the right side of the eye only, to go with the rest of the pic.

Updated it!

Anyone else have any thoughts on this? No offense to Derek, you've been great, but I just want to hear some other opinions and more suggestions

No advice here as you have more experience coloring a picture digitally than I do. You're really improving by leaps and bounds.

I will chime in with Derek in watching your light sources. Something you might want to do is get a GI Joe or Barbie, and have them sitting nearby. When you want to see how a light source affects something, set them next to a light in the position you want and observe the lighting patterns and where shadows it.

I do it with coworkers or even in the mall, or where-ever I am. Even the TV can give you some ideas as you're watching.
