Gladiator Guide 0.3 (Incomplete) [I8]
The Gladiators in Detail
5th Columnist (Boss) 400pts
[CoH] : Celebrant + Reveler (Have both 1 and 2 year anniversary badges)
[CoV] : (not available)
Powers:
Missile Launcher (Ranged, Lethal/Smashing, Knockback)
Grenade Launcher (Ranged AoE, Lethal/Smashing, Knockback)
Storm Kick (Melee, Smashing, Moderate)
Thunder Kick (Melee, Smashing, Disorient)
Crane Kick (Melee, Smashing, High, Knockback)
Crippling Axe Kick (Melee, Smashing, Minor, Immobilize, -Speed)
Dragon's Tail (PBAoE, Smashing, Moderate, Knockdown)
Notes:
This is a 5th Column Raserei Ubermenschen Rocket, pretty much equivalent to a Council Vortex Cor Leonis Archon.
A solid Gladiator with a good damage output but low survivability. Unfortunately its points cost is far too expensive for what it is.
Rating: 2/5
7th Generation Paragon Protector (Minion) 400pts
[CoH] : Infiltrator (Defeat 200 Paragon Protectors)
[CoV] : Infiltrator (Defeat 200 Paragon Protectors)
Powers:
Flight (Self, Fly)
Swipe (Melee, Lethal, Low)
Slash (Melee, Lethal, Moderate, -Defense)
Spin (PBAoE, Lethal, Moderate)
Focus (Ranged, Lethal, High, Knockback)
Eviscerate (Melee Cone, Superior, Lethal)
Focused Fighting (Auto, +Defense)
Notes:
I have yet to see the 7th Gen PP Gladiator use Unstoppable, although Paragon Wiki says they have it. In certain formats, minion-only or Mastermind, where points costs aren't at a hurge premium, this Gladiator has a place. It has relatively high damage output for a minion and is more survivable than most.
Rating: 3/5
Abomination (Minion) 200pts
[CoH] : Synapse's Cohort (Complete Synapse's TF)
[CoV] : (not available)
Powers:
Projectile Vomit (Ranged, Toxic, Moderate-DoT)
Zombie Vomit (Melee, Toxic, DMG???-DoT)
Zombie Brawl (Melee, Smashing, Minor)
Resistance (Auto +Resist: Smash, Sleep, Fear, Immobilization)
Notes:
The badge text for this Gladiator incorrectly references the Banished Pantheon. This is actually a Vahzilok zombie.
Rating: ?/5
Anathema (Lt) 250pts
[CoH] : Finder (Defeat 100 Lost Bosses)
[CoV] : Finder (Defeat 100 Lost Bosses)
Powers:
Mental Blast (Ranged, Psionic, -Recharge)
Psychic Scream (Ranged Cone, Psionic, -Recharge)
Telekinetic Blast (Ranged, Smashing/Psionic, Moderate, Knockback)
Subdue (Ranged, Psionic, Moderate, Immobilize)
Will Domination (Ranged, Psionic, Moderate, Sleep)
Rikti Sword (Melee, Energy/Lethal, Disorient)
Brawl (Melee, Smashing, Minor)
Notes:
Not up to scratch for Boss battles, but it's telling that it's even worth considering it. Definitely one of the harder hitting Lt-class Gladiators and a staple of the Mastermind and no-boss formats. It's also one of the Gladiators that suffers from a borked AI, but in a good way for a change. Rather than use all it's nifty Psi attacks it seems to much prefer to close to melee and whack around with it's Rikti Sword. That's nothing to complain about; that single attack is probably the hardest hitting of all Lt melee attacks.
Rating: 4/5
Arachnobot (Minion) 300pts
[CoH] : (not available)
[CoV] : Agent of Discord (Mission, Operative Kirkland, 25-30, "Take out negotiator and witnesses")
Powers:
Chain gun (Ranged, Lethal, Minor, -Defense)
Claw (Melee, Lethal, Moderate)
Full Auto (Ranged, Lethal, Superior-DoT)
Power Jumping (Auto, +Jump, +Speed)
Notes:
Rating: ?/5
Arachnoid (Minion) 350pts
[CoH] : (not available)
[CoV] : Sewer Dweller (Exploration, Grandville: 2681, -443, -730)
Powers:
Venom Barb (Ranged, Lethal+Toxic DoT, Minor+Medium DoT, -Defense, -Speed)
Claw (Melee, Lethal)
Super Jumping (Auto, +Jump, +Speed)
Notes:
Rating: ?/5
Arch-Mage of Agony (Boss) 500pts
[CoH] : Archmage (Eye of the Magus Accolade)
[CoV] : (not available)
Powers:
Crush (Ranged, Immobilize, -Fly)
Gravity Distortion (Ranged, Hold)
Falchion (Melee, Lethal/Negative, Low)
Siphon Power (Ranged, Self +Damage, Foe -Damage)
Kamikaze (Suicide, PBAoE, Energy)
Absorb Pain (Ranged, Ally +Hit Points, Self -Hit Points)
Notes:
This is an unusual mob in that it's basically the same as an CoT Agony Mage but with a much higher level of resistance. Speculation is that this was an early attempt at an Elite Boss. One way or the other, this is one of the two Gladiators that really unbalance the format. The Heal ability is too strong and the resistances are too large. Most people who enjoy Gladiator matches either restrict its usage to one per team or ban it outright.
Rating: 6/5
Avalanche Shaman (Lt) 300pts
[CoH] : Banisher (Defeat 200 Banished Pantheon Masks)
[CoV] : Banisher (Defeat 200 Banished Pantheon Masks)
Powers:
Stone Prison (Ranged, Smashing, Moderate DoT, Immobilize, -Defense, -Fly)
Earthquake (Location AoE, -Accuracy. -Defense, Knockdown)
Tremor (PBAoE, Smashing, Moderate, Knockback)
Knife (Melee, Lethal, Minor)
Notes:
Excellent in restricted formats, making good use of Earthquake and Tremor, but fairly stupid about how it uses Stone Prison. Or more to the point, you need to keep it on a tight leash to take advantage over its fairly indiscriminate targetting.
Rating: 4/5
Behemoth Overlord (Lt) 400pts
[CoH] : Demon Slayer (Defeat Baphomet)
[CoV] : Demon Slayer (Defeat Baphomet)
Powers:
Fire Blast (Ranged, Fire, Moderate DoT)
Fire Ball (Ranged AoE, Fire/Smashing, Moderate)
Fire Breath (Ranged Cone, Fire, Moderate DoT)
Fire Sword (Melee, Fire/Lethal, Moderate)
Swipe (Melee, Lethal, Heavy)
Healing Flames (Self Heal, +Resist: Disorient)
Resistance (Auto, +Resist: Fire)
Behemoth Jumping ( Auto, +Jump)
Notes:
Strong in restricted formats, although somewhat expensive. A solid damage source with a damage type that isn't resisted much in this format. The self heal is nice, but often not used intelligently.
Rating: 4/5
Bladegrass (Minion) 300pts
[CoH] : Bladegrass (Defeat 300 Bladegrass, Razorvines, Blackrose)
[CoV] : Bladegrass (Defeat 300 Bladegrass, Razorvines, Blackrose)
Powers:
Thorn Blast (Ranged, Smashing/Energy, Moderate-DoT)
Spur (Ranged, Lethal, Heavy, Immob)
Pummel (Melee Cone, Smash, Heavy)
Resistance (Auto, +Resist: Smash)
Notes:
It is unclear exactly which Devouring Earth plant creatures count for this badge. It's quite possible that the list should include Herders.
Rating: ?/5
Boulder (Minion) 300pts
[CoH] : Liberator (Complete the Eden Trial)
[CoV] : (not available)
Powers:
Hurl Boulder (Ranged, Smash, Heavy, Knockback)
Brawl (Melee, Smashing, Heavy)
Rubble (Post death Special)
Resistance (Auto, +Resist: Lethal)
Notes:
At the time of writing I do not know whether the Rubble power works on this Gladiator.
Rating: ?/5
Button Man Gunner (Minion) 250pts
[CoH] : Keeper of Peace (Train up to level 20)
[CoV] : (not available)
Powers:
Burst (Ranged, Lethal, Moderate-DoT, -Defense)
Notes:
Rating: ?/5
Caliban (Boss) 250pts
[CoH] : Regenerator (Defeat 100 Troll Bosses)
[CoV] : Regenerator (Defeat 100 Troll Bosses)
Powers:

Haymaker (Melee, Smashing, High, Knockback)
Foot Stomp (PBAoE, Smashing, Moderate, Knockback)
Invincible (Click, +Defense, Resist: Hold, Sleep, Disorient, Immob, Knockback)
Notes:
Rating: ?/5
Chief Swiper (Lt) 250pts
[CoH] : Pwnz (Mission, *20-25 Tech Contact*, 20-25, "Defeat Freak leader, his crew")
[CoV] : (not available)
Powers:
Cybernetic Blade (Melee, Lethal, Superior)
Dull Pain (Self, Heal)
Revive (Self, Rez)
Resistance (Auto, +Resist: Cold, Knockback, Sleep, Disorient, Fear, Confuse)
Notes:
Rating: ?/5
Cobra (Boss) 250pts
[CoH] : (not available)
[CoV] : Snake Charmer (Exploration, Mercy Island: -385, 42, -1712)
Powers:
Mesmerize (Ranged, Psionic, Moderate, Sleep)
Venomous Spray (Ranged, Toxic, Moderate-DoT)
Hack (Melee, Lethal, High, -Defense)
Slash (Melee, Lethal, Moderate, -Defense)
Slice (Melee, Lethal, Moderate, -Defense)
Poison Bite (Melee, Lethal/Toxic, Moderate, -Defense)
Reconstruction (Heal, +Resist: Toxic)
Quick (Auto, +Speed)
Resistance (Auto, +Resist: Toxic)
Notes:
The Cobra is a villain staple. At only 250 points it's a bargain, with strong melee and moderate ranged abilities as well as some useful extras. The self heal is useful and their speed is extremely useful as a way to deal with Gladiator teams specialising in ranged attacks.
A note on balance is warranted. At 250 points this is poorly costed, as it is strictly superior to all other 250pt and 300pt Bosses, as well as Hellfrosts at 450pts.
Rating: 5/5
Cog (Minion) 150pts
[CoH] : Gearsmasher (Defeat 100 Clockwork Gears)
[CoV] : Gearsmasher (Defeat 100 Clockwork Gears)

Notes:
Rating: ?/5
Deathcap (Minion) 350pts
[CoH] : Protectorate (Defeat 500 Devouring Earth Eminators)
[CoV] : Devourer of Earth (Defeat 500 Devouring Earth Eminators)
Powers:
Spores (Ranged, Toxic, Moderate-DoT, Hold)
Spore Burst (PBAoE, Sleep)
Brawl (Melee, Smashing, Heavy)
Resistances (Auto, +Resist: Smash)
Notes:
The Gladiator badge is Fungoid, but the mob name is Deathcap.
Rating: ?/5
Ember Legacy of Flame (Minion) 250pts

[CoV] : Ember Legacy of Flame (Defeat 100 Legacy Chain Minions)

Falchion (Melee, Lethal/Negative, Minor)
Notes:
Rating: ?/5
Fortunata Seer (Lt) 350pts
[CoH] : Fortunata Seer (Defeat 100 Fortunatas)
[CoV] : Fortunata Seer (Defeat 100 Fortunatas)
Powers:
Mental Blast (Ranged, Psionic, Moderate, -Recharge)
Psionic Lance (Ranged, Psionic, Superior -Recharge)
Subdue (Ranged, Psionic, Moderate, Immob)
Tactics (PBAoE, Ally +Damage +Resist: Confuse)
Notes:
Fortunata Seer Tactics do not seem to stack. That seems unusual, as Mook Capos Assault definitely stacks.
The Fortunata Seer is an excellent Gladiator for restricted formats. Her damage output is excellent and Tactics makes a noticeable difference on the accuracy of her allies.
Balance note: this Gladiator is very underpriced for her abilities. There are several Lt-class Gladiators that are more expensive than this, but I would doubt that any of them are this good.
Rating: 5/5
Frostling (Minion) 150pts
[CoH] : Toy Collector (Open 200 presents from the Christmas event)
[CoV] : Toy Collector (Open 200 presents from the Christmas event)
Powers:
Frost Breath (Ranged Cone, Cold, Minor-DoT, -Recharge, -Speed)
Ice Bolt (Ranged, Cold/Smash, Minor, -Recharge, -Speed)
Notes:
The Gladiator badge is Snowbeast, but the actual Gladiator is Frostling.
Rating: ?/5
Gremlin (Minion) 200pts
[CoH] : (not available)
[CoV] : Electrician (Defeat 100 Cap au Diable Gremlins)
Powers:
Charged Bolts (Ranged, Energy, Moderate, -Endurance)

Electric Explosion (Suicide, PBAoE, Energy, -Endurance)
Resistances (Auto, +Resist: Energy)
Notes:
Rating: ?/5
Hellfrost (Boss) 450pts
[CoH] : Coldblooded (Defeat 250 Hellfrosts or Hordelings)
[CoV] : Coldhearted (Defeat 250 Hellfrosts or Hordelings)
Powers:
Bitter Ice Blast (Ranged, Cold/Smash, Superior, -Recharge, -Speed)
Glacier (PBAoE, Hold, -Recharge, -Speed)
Ice Storm (Location AoE, Cold, Moderate-DoT, -Recharge, -Speed)
Frost Breath (Ranged Cone, Cold, Minor-DoT, -Recharge, -Speed)
Frost Sword (Melee, Lethal/Cold, Moderate)
Frozen Armor (Auto, +Defense: Smash, Lethal, +Resist: Cold)
Notes:
Extremely overpriced. Glacier lasts about as long as the unslotted player's version ie., not long and the damage powers aren't as strong as most Boss class Glads. Perhaps this might be useful in multiples, but it's cost is prohibitive of that.
Rating: 2/5
Hercules Titan (Lt) 550pts
[CoH] : Grand Lanista (Win 10 rated Gladiator matches)
[CoV] : Grand Lanista (Win 10 rated Gladiator matches)
Powers:

Incendiary Swarm Missiles (Ranged AoE, Lethal, Burn)
Gas Swarm Missiles (Ranged AoE, Lethal, Hold)

Plasma Blast (Ranged, -Regen)
Merge (Special, 2 Damaged Hercules Titans will merge into a Zues Titan)
Pummel (Melee Cone, Smash, Heavy)

Powers:

Lightning Bolt (Ranged, Energy, -Endurance)
Ball Lightning (Ranged AoE, Energy, -Endurance)
Shock Punch (Melee, Smashing/Energy, Moderate-DoT)
Dull Pain (Self, Heal)
Revive (Self, Rez)
Resistance (Auto, +Resist: Cold, Knockback, Sleep, Disorient, Fear, Confuse)
Notes:
The Gladiator badge is actually Juicer, but the Gladiator it unlocks is a Juicer Chief.
A strong Gladiator for restricted formats, this is essentially an Elec/Elec Blaster with a self heal and a small chance of self-rez. Good value with a reasonable damage output.
Rating: 3/5
Kaolin Legacy of Earth (Minion) 300pts
[CoH] : Collector (Collect 25 badges)

Powers:
Flight (Self, Fly)
Healing Aura (PBAoE, Team Heal)
Heal Other (Ranged, Heal Ally)
Regeneration Aura (PBAoE, Team +Regeneration)
Mental Blast (Ranged, Psionic, -Recharge)
Scramble Thoughts (Ranged, Psionic, Minor, Disorient)
Psychic Tornado (Ranged AoE, Psionic, Moderate-DoT, Knockback)
Subdue (Ranged, Psionic, Moderate, Immobilize)
Notes:
I've noted before that team buffs in Gladiator format are extremely strong. This Gladiator has two of the best ones as well as some powerful attacks and a hard to take down body. Definitely ranks with the broken Gladiators and most people who enjoy the format either limit it's use to a single one or ban it outright.

Full Auto (Ranged Cone, Lethal, Superior-DoT)
Jab (Melee, Smashing, Minor, Disorient)
Punch (Melee, Smashing, Moderate, Knockback)
Haymaker (Melee, Smashing, High, Knockback)
Assault (Toggle PBAoE, Ally +Damage +Resist: Placate, Taunt)
Notes:
The Mook Capo has a very strong ranged attack in Full Auto, decent Melee abilities and the Assault buff. Team buffs are rare in Gladiator so you're getting good value here. The only minor downside is that due to Assault and the Full Auto cone, you will need to make an effort regarding positioning for maximum benefits. Overall, very strong, and a staple for Villain Gladiator teams.

This Gladiator is unbalanced and with the effects of Smoke Grenade at its current level it is arguable whether this can be balanced at any points cost. Most people who enjoy Gladiator matches either restrict its usage to one per team or ban it outright.

Wolf Jumping (Auto, +Jump, +Speed)
Notes:
Cost is the greatest factor here. I would point out that the Boulder (300), Slag Pile (350) and Steel Strongman (450) are all non-Boss Gladiators with similar abilities (and in the case of Steel Strongman, far superior) at lesser cost.

Energy Punch (Melee, Smashing/Energy, Moderate, Disorient)

Bone Smasher (Melee, Smashing/Energy, High, Disorient)
Whirling Hands (Melee AoE, Smashing/Energy)
Resistance (Auto, +Resist: Lethal, Smash, Energy, Fire, Cold)
Power Jumping (Auto, +Jump, +Speed)
Notes:
The Gladiator badge is Crey Power Tank, but the mob name is just Power Tank.
A bit disappointing with regards to damage output, as it is handily outdamaged at range by both the Mook Capo and the Shivan Destroyer and pretty much outclassed in melee by most of the other Bosses. It also has a tendancy to burn through its endurance quickly and then cycle its lowest damage attack as soon as it has the endurance. But you don't pick this thing for its damage; you pick it for its prodigious resistances. It has by far the best defences of any of the Gladiators (other than NW or AMofA) and you can use it tactically to exploit this.

The Gladiator badge is Hydra Protean, but the mob name is just Protean.

Raider Engineer (Minion) 300pts

Powers:
Advanced Sub Machine Gun (Ranged, Lethal, Minor, -Defense)
Machete (Melee, Lethaly, -Speed)
Brawl (Melee, Smashing, Minor)
Build Force Field Generator (Build)
Notes:
This is an unusual Gladiator in that it is a non-Boss Gladiator that's actually viable for competitive matches. As has been stated before, team buffs in Gladiator matches are rare and this is a good one that should help you win an otherwise matched combat. The FF Generator also persists after the Engineer is defeated (which is a good thing, he's not going to last long if every other Gladiator is a Boss).
One caveat: sometimes it decides that it doesn't want to build its FF generator and runs in with his Machete instead. Makes you feel real good about spending the 300 pts.

Ghastly Blast (Ranged, Negative, -Acc)
Scimitar (Melee, Lethal, -Defense)
Resistance (Auto, Resist: Sleep, Fear, Immobilize, Slow)
Notes:
As the Swift Steel is just a Boss version of the Blue Ink Men, so this is just a Boss version of the Night Haunt. As such it is solid, but it probably doesn't measure up to some of the better 250 and 300 pt Bosses.

Neutron Bomb (Ranged AoE, Energy, -Defense)
Contaminated Strike (Melee, Energy/Smashing, Knockdown, -Defense)
Radioactive Smash (Melee, Energy/Smashing, Disorient, -Fly, -Defense)

A solid Gladiator with a poorly resisted damage type, some nifty melee damage mitigation secondary effects and a good ranged AoE attack (which is unfortunately rarely used).

Clobber (Melee, Smashing, Minor, Disorient)
Shatter (Melee, Smashing, High, Knockback)
Resistance (Auto, +Resist: Smash, Lethal)
Notes:
Another solid, bargain Gladiator. This is probably overpowered for it's price (not so much as the Cobra, though) as it can easily take down 300 pt Gladiators such as Tank Smashers and Mook Capos without raising a sweat. The damage mitigation on nearly every attack (knockback and disorient) is especially useful.

O2 Boost (Ranged, Heal, +Resist: Sleep, Immobilize, Confuse, Stun)
Notes:
On paper this is a strong Gladiator, however due to an AI bug it is nearly unusable. The Sorcerer does not follow movement commands for long, quickly reverting to the standard PvE Sorcerer AI of teleporting in and out of combat randomly with Hurricane on to do random O2 Boosts.

Shuriken (Ranged, Lethal, Minor)
Hack (Melee, Lethal, High, -Defense)
Slash (Melee, Lethal, Moderate, -Defense)
Whirling Katana (Melee PBAoE, Lethal, Moderate, -Defense)
Notes:
I'm a big fan of the Tsoo Bosses, but it is such a shame that they chose what is probably the weakest of them for Gladiator. This is essentially a slightly upgraded Blue Ink Man with superior hit points. In testing the Kinetics powers simply don't offset the lack of damage output you suffer for taking this guy. Quite probably the worst Boss Gladiator.
I've recently had some more experienced folks tell me that this Gladiator is an excellent support option. I haven't had the Gladiator competition experience to confirm this, but I'd be willing to say YMMV at the moment and test it some more before the next version of this guide.

Hammer Clap (PBAoE, Disorient, Knockdown)
Dull Pain (Self, Heal)
Revive (Self, Rez)
Resistance (Auto, +Resist: Cold, Knockback, Sleep, Disorient, Fear, Confuse)
Notes:
You would think this guy would be better than it actually is. Unfortunately it is plagued by a few problems, including a tendancy to use Dull Pain as soon as it enters the Arena and a very poor cycling of it's attacks. In 3 on 3 Boss testing the Tank Smasher went down to every other Boss Class Gladiator other than Swift Steel. Even the self-rez (seems to be about 1 in 4 chance) helps minimally.

People have been nagging me to post this on the Guides section for a while now.
It's obviously incomplete, but I am slowly getting enough testing to rate each of the Glads. Feedback is welcome and I'm quite happy to revisit Gladiator commentary if you feel that it's unfair or incomplete.
Excellent guide! If you'd like I can help you do some testing on the Test server sometime to add further to your comments!

Thanks for the offer! Any chance you're in anything like the +10:00 GMT timezone?
Great job! I would also like to note that the annivarsary gladiator, it can put out some good damage, but the health is rather lacking. I would combine it with a calliban, a tank swiper and, JUST BECAUSE I WANT ALL POINTS GONE, a cog or was it a gear....a clockwork thing that is very weak. I think i may have found an actual use for the cogs/gears. Get like 2 arch mages, and then get the clockwork, hide them throughout map. If you can get a 3rd mage, get it. Just a thought, hasnt been applied yet.
Well, as I said:
[ QUOTE ]
A solid Gladiator with a good damage output but low survivability.
[/ QUOTE ]
And as far as the Arch Mage thing: they're way overpowered. No matter what you put them with you're team is going to be way too good if you play 2 or 3 of them (and possibly only 1 of them). You get a similar effect on the villain side with multiple Night Widows.
In the interests of fair competition, you're better off not using either of them.
A Caliban can take out the Arch Mage of Agony. It takes forever (10 minutes?) but I have seen it. The Mage just can't hurt that dude.
I'm not sure what time zone I'm specifically in, I just know I'm on the East Coast. For example, the time in which I'm posting this message is about 10:40 AM.

THe mage probably isn't using it's Kin+close combat knife swipe it has that deals negative damage. If at a range it tends to use it's hold which does very insignificant damage, whereas if you override it to use the close combat attack it will kill the Caliban much faster.

Yeah, that's my main problem. With you on the East Coast of the US and me in Australia, we have a 16 hour time difference. Makes it hard to co-ordinate with potential testers.
The (not very) Complete Guide to Gladiators version 0.3 [I8]
by Min Min
What is this?
A guide to the Gladiator matches arena feature and the badges required to get the Gladiators for it.
Notes
This is only version 0.3 of this guide. My original goal was just the basic list of Gladiators. I've made a few corrections in that and started to rate many of them. I've also sorted out a simple list of each class of Gladiator and its points cost. Still far from complete, but people are looking for the resource so I thought I'd get it out there.
The Notes section under each Gladiator is beginning to see progress. Feedback is welcome for the next version of the guide.
A note on the Night Widow, Longbow Warden 2 and the Arch Mage of Agony. These merit 6/5 as they simply are in a different league of effectiveness compared to the other Gladiators.
Acknowledgments
Very little of this information is original. This is just my attempt to tie it all together in a human-readable format that doesn't require cross-referencing of several sources. I have made ample use of:
Badge-hunter.com
Paragon Wiki
The CoH/CoV Prima Guide
The Official Forum's Badges and Gladiators section (Thanks everybody!)
A Note on Gladiator Selection
Gladiator points values are broken.
Rank is all important in Gladiator combat with Bosses easily wiping the floor with Minions and Lieutenants regardless of the points differential. Unfortunately this fact is not reflected in the points values assigned to each Gladiator. There are also a couple of extremely over-powered Gladiators (Night Widow, Arch Mage of Agony), that further distort the format.
So, in normal Gladiator combat, it makes no sense to choose anything but Boss-ranked Gladiators.
As the Boss-ranked Gladiators are less than one third of the available selections, this greatly reduces the available choice for a competitive match. Because of this it's a good idea to have alternate formats in mind, such as:
(All these formats assume that Night Widow, Longbow Warden 2 and Arch Mage of Agony are BANNED; consider other bannings as required).
<ul type="square">[*]No Boss. Bosses are broken, don't play with them.[*]N Boss. No more than N bosses and no more than 1 boss of each type. I've had fun with 1 Boss, 2 Boss and 3 Boss formats.[*]Mastermind: 3 Minions, 2 Lts and 1 Boss each. Personal favourite.[/list]

A Note on Gladiator Commentary
Gladiator points values are broken.
Unfortunately it is very difficult to divorce the genereal effectiveness of a Gladiator from how much you pay for that effectiveness. For instance, a Hellfrost is an extremely strong Gladiator with an impressive range of control abilities along with a general level of resistance and a reasonable amount of damage, but what gives it a low rating in this format is the comparison to cheaper Gladiators. For 50 more points you can have 2 Cobras or 2 Smasher Elites, both of which would handily kick Frosty's butt.
