A question about Flash...

That is, Adobe Flash, not the guy from DC comics.

Anyway, I've always wanted to do animations and things, and it seems the best way to do this is to get Adobe Flash...

However, it's freaking expensive...

Are there any alternatives? Is there a stripped down Flash in the same way there's a stripped down Photoshop?
