The face of Gloom

“No mom! I don’t want you or anyone coming here and I’m certainly not coming back home!” Georgia screamed into the phone’s handset before slamming it down on the table. Looking at her watch, she swore at herself about being late for work as she grabbed her jacket off the floor and ran out of her apartment.

Georgia Sharker worked at the local casino on Mercy Island, though she was only 17 years old, she was given a fake ID by the manager to say she was 21. Her job at the casino was to use her magic to find the cheaters and helping the club cheat money out of its patrons. She was a bright girl, jet black hair, brown eyes and enjoyed using magic.

The money wasn’t the best, but at least people where she lived knew who she worked for and not to touch her. The night was busy, with a little commotion from some Hellions who thought they’d try and sneak in a magical lucky charm they stole to try and win lots of money, but were thrown out, literally.

BANG, BANG, BANG! Georgia woke and looked at her watch, it was 6:50am, the banging against her apartment door started again, so she slid out of her bed “If it’s the landlord, so help me I’ll kill her” Georgia mumbled in a grouchy tone to herself. “What do you …” she began as she threw open her door, only to be faced with her father, mother and older sister, with the look of shock on her face, it took a few moments for her to register and before she could slam the door shut, they were pushing their way inside.

“Get out! GET OUT!” Georgia screamed, “Not until we’ve drummed some sense into that thick skull of yours!” her father shouted back, looking around her place in great disapproval. “Do you know how much you are costing my company young lady?!” he continued, “Well, aren’t we surprised that’s all about you, again!” Georgia snapped sarcastically back, “How dare you speak to your father like that” Georgia’s mother said, but Georgia sneered at both her mother and sister.

The argument seemed to have gone on for hours, “I’ve had enough of this!” Georgia’s father screamed, grabbing her by the wrist and dragging her a few steps towards the door “We are taking you home, where you will attend a traditional boarding school and finish your education, along with some discipline” he continued, but Georgia dragged her heels, pulling her arm to break free of his grip “Let me go!” she shouted, “Let me go or I’ll use my magic on you!” she continued. At that, he stopped and turned around to face her, “Oh yes? So the rumours are true?” her father said with an almost laugh in his voice, “Go on then, show me some of your magic… No?” he continued, pushing her backwards every few steps in an attempt to force her into action, “Just as I thought, you are nothing but a little [censored]!” he spat at her “Jonathan!” Georgia’s mother shouted at her father “What?! He replied angrily “That’s what she is! And it’s going to stop right now!” he continued as he raised his hand and brought it down across Georgia’s face with a loud slapping noise, knocking her to the floor.

As Georgia laid on the floor dazed, listening to her father argue about what to do with her, she started cursing him under her breath, finally getting to her feet with a slight wobble, her sister looked at her “Well, you had it coming and I’m glad you got it” she said, Georgia’s mother said something along similar lines, but her father stood there staring at her as she stared back at all three of them. “I hope you all die!” Georgia said in an angry voice, suddenly a creature appeared in front of them and before they had time to react, Georgia’s family’s bodies laid over the floor in pieces.

Looking up at creature, still slightly dazed, she thought this was a dream, “T-thanks” she said to it slowly, expecting to wake up and see them still arguing, but the creature turned to her, still baring its teeth and grabbed her head “paayyyyyyymeennttt” it said in a slobbering voice.

The skull like face mask in the mirror stared back with its black socket less eyes and no mouth for a few moments before moving away. It had been at least a year since she had that dream last. “Alright, back to your cell Gloom” a gruff voiced guard said, Georgia turned and used the only non-restricted magic to visualise her surroundings in her mind and headed back to her new home for the rest of her life sentence.

Georgia was sentenced to life for mudering her family along with whoever tried to stop before Heroes were sent to stop her. Most of the 2 years was spent in a psychiatric ward before being released to the “Zig”, where she was nicked named Gloom by the other inmates because of the face mask that covered what was left of her face.
