Origins

or
The Mysterious Magical Footie Pajamas of Doooooom

“Momma? I need a drink of water!” yelled a small voice at nearly midnight.

“Alright, but Kitty you’ve got to settle down and get some sleep, it’s late and you have a big day tomorrow with your first day of school” replied Kitty’s mother bringing a small glass of water to her daughter.

Kitty took her time drinking the water while her mother knew this part of the “I don’t wanna go to sleep, tell me a story” game quite well.

“Momma, what was your first day of school like?” asked the little girl now being tucked in and kissed on her forehead.

“Well let’s see what I can remember” said her mom as she turned on Kitty’s nightlight and turned off the overhead room light.

“As I recall I was about your age when the people from Hero Corps invited me to go to their school for gifted children.”

“They call me a ‘special’ child, don’t they Momma?”

“Yes, Kitty, they do and you are such a special little girl with a very active imagination. That’s why Hero Corps invited you to their school.”

Kitty grinned and clutched her favorite plush doll, the green fur with blue stripes and button eyes Mr. Mittens, as she closed her eyes to listen to the story.

As her mother reassured her with tales of her first day of school little Kitty Whomper fell asleep, tightly clutching Mr. Mittens in her hands.

The night turned into very early morning as Mr. Mittens watched with his unblinking button eyes over his charge.

The cuckoo in it’s clock chimed 2 a.m. on an otherwise peaceful morning.

“Kitty wake up” a voice whispered to the sleeping little girl.

“Kitty we have work to do, wake up” the voice was more insistant now.

“Mom, is it morning already? Am I late for school?” a sleepy little voice answered back.

“Kitty, you must wake up, Hero Corps needs you”

Kitty sat up slowly realizing she was still in bed. She looked around in the dim light and saw nothing.

“Am I awake or dreaming?” she asked.

“Kitty you are indeed awake and time is of the essence” said the same calm voice.

Kitty looked around and saw no one.

“Ok, I get it, is this a game of hide and seek? Who are you and where are you?” she asked while squinting in the darkness.

“Please don’t tell me you’re the monster in my closet or under my bed” Kitty curled up under the covers again just a little afraid.

“I’m not the monsters, which by the way don’t exist. I’m Mr. Mittens and Hero Corps needs you now”

Kitty looked at her toy. “Mr. Mittens? I didn’t know you could talk. Does mom know?”

“Only you can hear me Kitty, now we have to get moving or it’ll be too late.”

“Moving? Are we leaving Paragon City? Those mean old bill collectors, are they after us again?” Kitty asked innocently.

Mr. Mittens only stared with his button eyes at Kitty Whomper.

“Um, Mr. Mittens? If get out of bed the monster under it will get me unless I jump.”

“Then jump Kitty, let’s go!” said the implacable Mr. Mittens.

Kitty looked at Mr. Mittens and asked “How do you talk without moving your mouth? Are you a ventrili, ventral, veni, um… a magician?”

Mr. Mittens only stared being firmly grasped as Kitty leaped out of her bed so the monster under it wouldn’t get her.

“Mr. Mittens is mom awake? Does she know I’m going out?”

“There’s not time to tell her, let’s get a move on Kitty. You are to meet with your contact at City Hall downtown.”

Kitty simply shrugged and grabbed her robe to put on over her footie pajamas. She then attached Mr. Mittens to the shoulder of her robe with double sided carpet tape and slipped out her bedroom window into the night.

“Mr. Mittens I’m sorry for the tape but momma won’t let me sew with needles yet or use pointy scissors. I would have sewn you to my robe but you know… she still thinks I’m a baby. I’ll try to be gentle if I have to rip you off my shoulder on laundry day.”

Into the night went Kitty and Mr. Mittens. It seemed to her to take forever to go the two blocks to City Hall when it had only taken about 10 minutes. Kitty was still talking to Mr. Mittens when she arrived and went into the historical building.

She was asking Mr. Mittens who the statues of all the heroes inside were when the City Representative approached.

“Isn’t it a bit early for little girls to be out and about?” asked the nice lady.

“Well Mr. Mittens said I was needed here so I got up and came to help. I don’t know doing what, but I’m here” said Kitty to the well dressed and nice lady.

The City Representative bent over little Kitty Whomper and said “I see. Could you ask Mr. Mittens who it is you are to see here? I’ll take you there.”

Mr. Mittens told Kitty who to see and Kitty in turn told the City Rep.

Kitty looked at the City Rep “Can you hear Mr. Mittens when he talks? He says my momma can’t. Can you?”

The lady smiled a knowing smile and took Kitty by the hand to lead her downstairs to her contact “I’m afraid only you can hear Mr. Mittens talk, it’s part of your being a special child. And that’s why Hero Corps needs you here.”

There was a long and wide hallway past the New Hero Assignment opening. The City Rep and Kitty walked straight down the hallway, that to Kitty seemed to go on forever, to the Genetic Investigation and Facilitation Team (G.I.F.T.) to see her contact, Mr. Antonio Nash.

“Kitty this is Mr. Nash. He’ll be your teacher here at Hero Corps. He’ll get you settled in and teach you what you need to know to work for us” said the City Rep as she handed over Kitty Whomper to her new teacher.

The City Rep then turned to Mr. Nash “Mr. Mittens has done his job well, only Kitty can hear him. She definitely belongs in our school for the gifted.”

Kitty lost interest in the two adults as they discussed her. She promptly wandered around the room looking at the rows of computers, books and other learning tools in the room.

Kitty selected a book from one of the library shelves and made herself at home on one of the reading tables. There she sat cross-legged reading quietly for a few minutes.

“I’m sorry I took so long Kitty” said Mr. Nash. “I sure am glad you and Mr. Mittens are here. Do you have any questions about the school or why we need you?”

Kitty kept reading and while she was reading asked “Did my mom go to school here too? And did you know that she can’t hear Mr. Mittens talk? Seems I’m the only one that can hear him, why is that?”

Mr. Nash sat on the edge of the reading table with his legs hanging over the edge. “Kitty tell me what you know about radio waves and how they travel through the air.”

Kitty looked at the book she was reading and thought for a moment about the question before answering.

“Well…. I know that they’re invisible and that they’re based on electrical impulses and use certain frequent, freak, er thingys to go from one point , like a tower, to another point, another tower. The radio station converts the signal and rebroadcasts to our radios. Our ears pick up the sound waves the radio converts em to and we can hear what’s said or played” explained Kitty, totally amazed that she could know such a thing.

Mr. Nash smiled “Very good, you understand the concept if not the actual science. That is why you can hear Mr. Mittens and no one else can. He’s like a radio picking up a signal that you are turned in to. No one else is tuned into his channel for his broadcast frequency. And that’s exactly why Hero Corps is happy to have such a special little girl as you going to school here.”

Kitty looked a bit bewildered and just nodded as Mr. Nash explained.

Mr. Nash continued “Because of your birth parents being mutants you carry on their mutant genes. You have special abilities that we can train you to use. Would you like to learn to use your gifts to help the citizens of Paragon City, Kitty?”

“Um… okay Mr. Nash. I’ll go to school here and study real hard to learn. Will Mr. Mittens be able to stay with me?” asked Kitty.

Mr. Nash smiled and replied “Mr. Mittens can stay with you as long as you want. Welcome to the team Kitty and Mr. Mittens”

“The first thing we need to do Kitty is to test you to find out just what powers you inherited from your parents. This will be painless but we will need to shave your head in order to attach our testing equipment to you” Mr. Nash then went on to explain to Kitty just what they would be doing and how it wouldn’t hurt her.

“Well, okay, if my mom has given you permission to run those tests I don’t mind my head being shaved. Did you know my mom took the scissors away from me because I gave myself a haircut? I thought I did ok until I got to the back of my head. Do you know how hard it is to see back there?” asked Kitty.

“She gave us permission to run tests on you Kitty. Would you like to see the cap you’ll be wearing?” asked Mr. Nash.

Kitty nodded as Mr. Nash opened a box with the cap in it. As he removed the cap Kitty’s eyes lit up with excitement.

“It has cat ears on it! Gimme gimme! I LOVE kitty cats!” Kitty shouted excitedly. “Did you know that I once had a Halloween costume where I dressed up like Mr. Mittens and had a cap with cat ears like his? Do I get to wear a Halloween costume with the cap? Do I get to paint my face to look like Mr. Mittens too?”

Kitty was practically jumping up and down on the table.

Mr. Nash laughed thinking “Kitty you little nut!”. Laughing Mr. Nash replied “Oh I think we can find you a Mr. Mittens powersuit and matching helmet. And if your mom says you can wear makeup as part of your hero disguise, we’ll get you what you want for the look you want.”

“YaY! I’m gonna like school!” shouted Kitty as she danced around on the library table.
