my problem with open RPs

I've kept this bottled up for several months now, and whenever I'm here looking for some interesting fanfiction or such, I'm reminded of how one small problem practically ended my interest in open RPing. You see, I came up with a concept that caught on relatively quickly. It was fun, for a while. Then, in an attempt to get people to portray their characters in a way not usally seen WITHOUT just relying on deus ex machina, I conferred an air of omnipotence (I understand the irony). Now, instead of just saying their problems in a rational, civilized manner, they yelled and stormed out. In fact, one person, who shall remain nameless, was rather vague in his/her exit, and I got yelled at for referring to her afterwards. So, instead of fixing the problem, or even trying to, I decided to contain the damage, and killed the thread like the Old Yeller it was. Later, the story was revived in a new, still active thread, by one of the old members of the first thread. I promptly joined, and inevitably somebody got offended. Now, instead of coming to me with the problem, they complain to the one heading the thread. Then, they all take turns individually yelling at me. Now, being asked by one person to change something is fine. But, to be yelled at, nay, insulted by almost everyone else on the thread, is something no man short of Mohandas Ghandi (Mahatma was a title, his first name was Mohandas.) would stand for. So, I left as tastefully as possible, as opposed to fixing the problem and remaining the thread's "[censored]." I could have just said I was leaving, but no, I wrote a nice, tragic, and poignant end to my characters' lives. The only mention of it by the others was one of the posters subtley complaining about how a villain I'd created in the first thread resembled his character (although, I think he just never bothered to read the first thread, since he was new). In conclusion, all of this anger and annoyance could have been prevented if people could just state problems calmly and to the offender, instead of flaming him while complaining to whoever started the thread. It's amazing, but people sometimes listen.

That's too bad. I remember that thread too and wondered why it suddenly died after being so popular. But I have to wonder how you presented your idea to the community. If you want to be experimental you have to get everybody's approval first and say exactly what you are going to do. Whether or not its your thread. If its an open RP as soon as someone else posts it is the community's thread too.

I know, I just wanted to vent a bit. At least the people remember it. As I said, it's been continued on the thread, "The New Recruits." I still miss the Academy, but I guess I'll have to move on. I need to get some more magnetic poetry (I just throw it at the fridge, and make an idea out of what comes up, that's how I got the idea for the academy. That and watching the movie, "Police Academy"). Hell, one character could've easily passed for Hightower, but I'm just rambling now. Time to brainstorm (sounds of a light drizzle coming from poster's head).
