BRAK the Insane

The Battlefield Reconaisance Androids (series K), or BRAK for short, were designed by Portal Corps to serve as scouts. When a new dimension was detected, the plan was that a BRAK could be sent thru to gather intelligence which Portal could then use to guide later missions. It was during the very first mission of the BRAK that things began to go horribly wrong.

Sensors had detected the new dimesion (Designation Classified, extreme risk) possessed several unusual energy signatures. As soon as the BRAK was dispatched, all telemetry data and control of the unit was lost. For several hours, Portal technicians attempted to re-establish contact with the unit, but to no avail. As teams were preparing another attempt to retrieve the unit, the BRAK stumbled back thru the portal and collapsed, the portal shutting behind it. Attmepts to reopen the portal to that dimension have met with failure, overloading several portal generators.

The BRAK designer's took the damaged unit back to the lab to examine. Initial tests revealed its molecular structure had been altered, making it even more resistant to damage than before. Attempts to reactivate the CPU failed, apparently due to significant corruption of the OS (later investigators believe this was due to tampering by unknown forces in the alien dimension). The decision was made to perform a full system wipe and attempt to reload the OS, since further testing seemed impossible. Step one of the wipe consisted of a massive electrical surge, designed to overload the system. When the surge was discharged however, power continued to be drawn in. As technicians frantically attempted to shut down the process, the BRAK reactivated itself and began to run amok.

In the carnage that followed, the BRAK design lab was destroyed. Of the 32 staff members present, 6 were killed, 8 missing and presumed dead, with the remainder all seriuosly wounded. All the 19 remaining BRAK units were destroyed. The original unit was tracked to the sewer system, where contact was lost.

In the weeks that followed, BRAK was seen in several locations across the city. On each occassion, BRAK was observed downloading massive amounts of data from computer systems (Paragon Public Libary, Paragon City College Main Frame, Hero Corps Offices). On at least one occasion, it was observed diverting the teleportation beam of a beaten hellion, apparently absorbing the energy as information. It then dissappeared for several months, reappearing only recently.

Apparently, BRAK has assimilated much of the data it has gathered, but with some discrepancies. It has decided it is a hero, registering with the city as such, and paying for the damages it has caused in the past (where it got the money from is a matter of debate). For some reason, it has difficulties in recognizing humans as a separate species, referring to all humans (or near humans) as monkeys. It also seems to view them as a food source, though this has not been confirmed. It is known that on several occassions, suspects it was supposed to apprehend have turned up missing afterward, but no concrete data exists. Between its bizarre view of life in Paragon City, its somewhat reckless fighting habits and its complete non sequitors, Paragon City's Finest have dubbed it BRAK the Insane. How the BRAK saga will develop is anyone's guess.
