  1. Alright, I installed this game via Steam on a Vista 64-bit system. Had recently had problems and upgraded to Windows 7 64-bit, by wiping my primary partition, completely separate from my games partition.

Now - I try to run the game via Steam, everything works great, until I'm in the game.

I get the server list, but instead of displaying each server name, I get a list of servers with the name of the path to my Steam directory, instead of the names of each server. Upon clicking one of these, it tells me that my game is out of date and that I'm missing a registry file.

I've been told that Steam is the problem and that I shouldn't update the game with Steam, so I didn't. I ran the CoH updater and got everything up-to-date, verified all files with the CoH Updater. Even redownloaded the game and repeated this process (redownloaded through Steam) and here I am, with the same friggin' problem.

It appears that I am simply missing registry files and I assume this means I'd have to download the client elsewhere, but I seriously do not want to do that again, since I've wasted so much time downloading crap already.

Is there some way that someone could just hand me their registry files and show me where to edit them to match the paths and what-not that I need to make this thing work?

    Oy.

    Wrong version??

That's just it, it's completely up-to-date now, I've used the CoH-updater and everything. I've verified the files with the CoH updater, but now everytime I go into the game, I get this error telling me that it doesn't have the registry file. I can't think of any way to simply insert the registry file myself, because I will not, not, not redownload this.

Argh, whatever, screw it. I don't care anyway. All Points Bulletin is gonna be more awesome than this hoop-through-hoop, mess of a game.

    Wrong version??

So I'll start by saying that I had originally purchased and installed this game via Steam. Just recently reformatted and installed Windows 7, an upgrade from Vista. I have all of my games partitioned on a separate drive, so they were all still there.

All of the games I had been playing through Steam on Vista, now work on Windows 7 as well, no need to redownload them. EXCEPT, for City of Heroes!

I've downloaded, verified Steam files, used the patcher, blah blah blah. I log in and the server list are a bunch of directory strings to my Steam folder. You click one, it tells you the game is out of date and to use the patcher. Alright CoH! I'll just run around in freaking circles.

I don't get it, I'm about to give up, but if anyone knows how to fix this insanity, let me know. Although, if it involves redownloading, forget about it.

I should also mention that the error not only tells me that I'm using the wrong version (when I click a server in the list, that displays the path to my Steam folder instead of the name of the realm) it also tells me that it's missing a registry entry. Now, I do believe Steam is supposed to do this for you, although after reinstalling, it apparently did not. And I have no idea how to add a registry entry.
  5. Figured it out.

It's NOD 32. I didn't even have NOD running, the kernal was simply being used by the windows protection program and it was stopping the .exe from downloading correctly.

Piece of crap isn't on my computer anymore.

  6. This is coming from the freakin' downloader, while it's downloading the dern file.

It's gotta be the exe file, my computer hates it.
  7. I don't get this, I think it just told me that it's fixing files before they're even downloaded completely. Is it possible that there's a registry file somewhere screwing me up?

    For good measure.

Looks like a bad download or installation from Steam.

    Don't install from Steam.

Don't install to a Steam folder.

Uninstall what you have already tried to install.

Download the installer from the PlayNC website and run it, have it install to D:\Games\City of Heroes

Play the game once it is installed.
Are you 100% sure this will work?

edit: Well I'm doing it right now, we shall see if it does work...

  10. (( before you read this I should mention that I run Windows Vista 64 bit, 4 gigs of ram, plenty of H/D space, a decent dual core processor and what-not. To give you a good example, I can run Modern Warfare 2 on high settings, no problem. Although that most likely has nothing to do with my problem - thought I'd mention it ))

I bought this game via Steam last night to play with a friend. I have until 6:30/7pm EST tonight to get this working.

Here's the problem. I run the launcher after verifying file integrity with Steam (steam usually tells me that 2 or 3 files needed replaced and says they'll be acquired), updater launches and does a checksum. (it'll say checksumming for about 2 gigs or so)

    Then it'll acquire the manifest.

Next it'll tell me it's fixing files, these files:

    cg.dll
    cggl.dll
(both of those files go by no problem)
    cityofheroes.exe

and in the middle of fixing cityofheroes.exe, I get the most frustrating and unfixable error in the world:

    Updater - Error

checksum error in new file D:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\city of heroes/cityofheroes.exe

I've tried deleting the checksum file. Doesn't work.

I've tried deleting the .exe file. Doesn't work

I've run the updater from the folder in Steamapps, it simply acts as if I don't even have the game installed.

I've run the icon Steam/CoH installed on my desktop, does the same crap.

Does anyone know what the big problem here is and how it can be fixed? For crying out loud, I spent money on this, everything on my computer works fine, except for this.

I'll also mention that before purchasing the game on Steam, I had attempted to simply download it from the PlayNC account page, which gave me this exact error when trying to download it. Figured Steam wouldn't give me any crap - I was wrong!

    -Thanks
