As Toxic here didn't feel like linking to a planner, see here.
[/ QUOTE ]
After trying this planner, I am confused, because it lets me choose from the power pool at level 16 (while the manual says you get a 3rd rank at lvl 14 and a 4th rank at lvl 20).
Does it mean that I can spend as many points as I want in the power pools? Like, if I'm really freak, spend 5x4 power s in it?
Thanks for the enlightment

I'm very impressed by how helpful people are on this board and how quickly they answer posts. Thanks a lot.
I'll look into it (hadn't seen the ancillary powers yet but I have now, I'll revise my plan).

As stated, acrobatics and combat jumping can totally alter your play in both PvE and PvP, note that in the time it takes you to get up from being knocked back a PvP blaster will kill you, so KB protection can be crucial. Acro also prevents one none-controller hold from holding you, more than one will stack through this and any mez that is not a hold will go through it too (sleeps and stuns etc), learning to keep acro up during fights in PvP is a skill in itsself.
Fly is great but often not enough without another travel power, personally I would recommend combat jump, super jump, acrobatics, air superiority (-fly) and hover. hover needs 3 slots of speed in it, but is affected by pwoer boost, it also offers minimal defence. Air Sup. is massively underrated, if you can -jump and -fly someone they will be pretty screwed, most people do not slot swift or hurdle and you can tell those that do when they are trying to move with debuffs on them.
Aid self is another awesome pwoer offering a good heal with 50% stun resist for about 25 seconds.

Plight,
Thanks for the helpful answer.
All is very new to me, so sorry if I ask questions about things that appear obvious to experienced players.
I am not sure I understand how the powers you mention can be obtained. Based on the manual, it would seem you can choose 4 powers from ranks 1 or 2 at levels 6, 8, 10 and 12. When reaching lvl 14, you can take a fifth power, up to rank 3 and when reaching lvl 20 you can take a sixth power, up to level 4. Then at levels 41 you get a seventh and an eighth power, rank 1 and 2,("ancillary" powers???) and at lvl 44 and 47 you get a ninth and a tenth ancillary power, ranks 3 and 4.
Does it mean you can get two rank 3 powers and two rank 4 powers (the normal one and the "ancillary" one), provided you have at least one/two other power(s) in the group where you get your third/fourth rank power? This leaves another 2 powers of ranks 1 or 2. It's a bit confusing and not perfectly explained here, so let's just see if I got it right.
Could I take:
COMBAT JUMPING 2
SUPER JUMP 3
ACROBATICS 4
AIR SUPERIORITY 2
SWIFT 1
HURDLE 2
STAMINA 4
HASTEN 2
STIMULANT 2
HEAL SELF 3
I would love to take stealth but I don't see what to take out based on what you suggest and what I feel would be useful. The only thing I could think of would be to take stealth instead of air superiority, but as you and another experienced poster said it's great...
But first thing first: have I made any mistake or is it feasible? If so, does it look good or do you have other suggestions?
Thanks a lot for the help,

Thanks for all the tips.
Efficiency is indeed a fun factor for me, especially since I will not be able to reroll numerous times. This is why I try to educate myself a bit before doing too many mistakes
On question on the build that was suggested. It brings in Ice Bolt very late (lvl 49) in its first version and not at all in the second version. Why is that? I would have assumed that an additional single target nuke would be worth taking. Or is it just unnecessary due to fast recharge time of other(s) single nuke(s)?
Following this build, I am currently (lvl 5) in a somehow weird situation where I have only one range strike (ice blast) and two melee strikes (power thrust/energy punch), so I usually blast from a distance and then run toe-to-toe to finish off my target (hopefully). Not such a biggie because I have a lot of life (as compared to "casters" in other games), but still it feels weird for a blaster to go melee.
Thanks,

I guess it's the graphical card cause I'm playing on a lap-top where I fear the components are hard/impossible to upgrade. But it seemed playable so far, I'll see how it evolves.
I'll take your word on what's most useful to a blaster and try superspeed (maybe in combo with flight to have a vertical component if needed). If I understood right, this can be respecced anyway so no biggie.
I made my character yesterday night and we did the first few missions with a friend who created a scrapper (DM/regen) and so far it's been very easy for us. And a lot of fun as well, we'll keep duoting for a while.
Anyway, thanks for the very helpful suggestions all along this thread, very much appreciated!

Don't do this. If you want to play a flying blaster, go with superspeed instead.
[/ QUOTE ]
You mean fly + superspeed? If so, can you please explain why?
Generally speaking, I'm concerned with lag. I fear that the lag I suffer from, from time to time, will make it difficult to move around at high speed. Is it an issue? Would it be better with TP?
Thanks,

En parlant de RP... je me marre un peu quand je passe dans une rue où il y a plus de loubard en train d'agresser les petites mémés que d'honnêtes citoyens
nostra -
Psydock, thanks for pointing that out.
But... what's a build up (sorry, my game was installed in French before I realized I'll join an English speaking server, I'll reinstall it in English, but in the meantime, I'm screwed with translations). Is it the improvements you get after a victory (like damage boost, precision boost, etc.)?
nostra -
Great, I'll try that then. Is there anything I should know in order to "prepare" my flight power for ASAP? Like prerequisites, etc?
Also, if I respec... do I loose all the added slots I put on a power (I guess not, that would make respec useless)?
Thanks,
nostra -
Thanks for the clarification.
How would that sound to you: flight to play the flying bomber and TP to get the hell out of there if needed?
nostra -
Aha, I see. So my scenario of flying around, nuking from the air, and flying away if targeted won't work because when nuking, flight is disabled for 2 sec (I assume I will just freefall?).
Speaking of backup, I was thinking flight and teleport. But maybe this would use too much endurance?
And last question, how many movement power can you reasonably take? (there are in the same power pool as invisibility? and other useful stuff to take, I guess?).
Thanks,
nostra -
Thanks for the kind assistance and warm welcome! Will do as suggested.
See ya!

Merci à tous pour les conseils.
Tombah, je n'hésiterai pas à te faire signe le cas échéant, merci bien!

Thanks for the answers, really helpful to be able to read this template properly. Now I have an idea on how to develop a proper blaster. Speaking of which, I see in the template that the first ice power you get at lvl 1 is 6-slotted... it probably means that the power remains useful troughout the entire game? (i.e. the damages raise with your level?)
Thanks for the tip on flight, as a first character, it seems like flight must just be "fun" so I'll try it if it's doable in pvp as well. If I got it right, there are respec anyway, no?
Thanks,

Melee damage is nearly redundant in higher-end arena matches, since everyone is moving around so fast.
[/ QUOTE ]
That's a thing I wanted to ask: as a nuker, why should I want superspeed, when I could take flight and nuke safely from a distance? Is it possible to just move around flying when someone tries to melee you (can they do this while flying?) or will they just /follow you?
Sorry for the noobs question, just trying to sort out the basics. Thanks for your help!

Thanks very much.
I assume acc means accuracy, dmg is damage and rechg is recharge. But what is TH_Buf? And what is EndMod (reduction to endurance consumption?)
Most importantly, what are the numbers in brackets? (ex: Acc(1) Dmg(3) Dmg(7) Rechg(50) Rechg(50))
And also, has this template only superjump? I was thinking of taking flight, in order to stay out of reach of the enemies while blasting them... doesn't it work that way? why choose superjump instead?
thanks very much for the helpful insight,

Hi Hammerfall,
I've read a nice guide on blasters since I created my first character.
After reading this, I feel I went the right way doing ice/energy (elec seems to be more endurance drain oriented while energy is nice to send enemies flying when trying to engage melee... as for devices, I haven't tested it, it might be nice but I can imagine that it works better in 1v1 pvp when you can set your devices and camp while a group pvp would tend to more move and leave your nice devices behind...).
I'll keep going ice/ene for a while and see how I fare.
thanks all,

Thanks for the tips.
I've tried Ice/Energy a little and it works well in PvE, it feels rather safe with those nice Energy powers to send the enemies flying when they enter melee. How would Ice/Elec compare to that? (still in a PvP perspective, although now i only have the possibility to test PvE obvisouly).
In anycase, I understand from the your message, Xanthus, that I should try Ice/Devices if I want to solo PvP. That's fun as well, so I'll try it too.
Thanks for the tips!

Thanks for the tips.
I've begun with an ice/energy blaster and, so far, it works really well even in PvE.
Thanks!

Hi,
I'm creating my first character and thinking to make a blaster.
Has this archetype the potential to fare well in pvp?
If so, any guidance would be most welcome. What are the archetypes that do well and what are those to avoid?
Should I have the same primary as the secondary?
Any other tip would be most appreciated.
Thanks,

Hello,
I'm creating my first character and it's going to be a blaster because it seems like the type of characters I enjoy playing. Note I always build characters with pvp in mind.
In other games, I tend to look for powers doing not only raw damage but with other cool side effects, like snare, etc. Is is a valid thinking in CoH?
I'm just wondering because "ice" seemed to be nice in this regard, but another poster is complaining about his ice/ice blaster, so I'm not so sure anymore!
Any orientation on the main types of blasters (how they fare in pvp, what are their advantages, etc.) would be most welcome.
And, finally, should I have the same primary as the seondary or rather diversify? Any tips on that?
Thanks in advance,
nostra
