I have only one problem with pets. Or rather, I have a problem with one of them.
Red Cap.
There's something fundamentaly wrong with having a homicidal, hunchbacked, bearded, ape-like, evil gnome for a pet.
It's not cute, and it cannot be explained flavor-wise.
Let me elaborate. Clockwork and robot are constructs, no problem. They totally work as pets. Demon and Rikti Monkey are at least moderately cute, and they don't quite possesss human-level intelligence or looks, so it's fitting for them to be pets.
But a Red Cap?
I don't know, it just doesn't fit in. It feels wrong. It's not pet material. It can work as a follower at best, or as a slave at worst. But not as a pet. It might be fitting for a villain, but definitely not for a hero.
A little Tuatha De Dannan? Fir Bolg? Hydra? Anything from Devouring Earth? All FANTASTIC choices for a pet. Red Cap is a whole different level of creature. It's like having a little witch following you around, or a tsoo sorcerer. It's wrong on many levels and I think it sends a different message than originally intended by devs.
Besides, shouldn't we have pets that correspond with five different archetypes? What happened to that idea?
Mutant - ?
Natural - ?
Magic - Red Cap, Demon
Technology - Clockwork, Robot
Science - Rikti Monkey (I guess, but it could also go under Technology)
I don't know... It could've been done with a bit more care.

You could explain it as being cursed, or maybe even having your own little crazy gnomish stalker.
