Bots and Thermal. If you dont want to fall asleep on your keyboard stay away from Bots/FF. Thermal will give you a good well rounded secondary set that go's well with any AT set.
It has Def and Heals and Buffs and Debuffs and a very good O'shiz botton for saving a group from wipes.
Bots them selfs are like Thermal very well rounded but not the best at any one thing. But mixed together with some Leadership powers they do become a pve solo or group power house. -

The reason they heal more often when you dont slot heal is becouse the game uses and ratio check to see if your protect bots need to heal.
i.e. If your protect bots heal will heal 40% base and checks to see what bots have hit points lower then said 40% if all bots are seting at 39% then no heal is given and it will wait till next cycle of checks.
With battle drones having the lowest hit points and the protect bots haveing a higher amount of hit points. What is 40% for the portect bot would end up being like 50-60% for the battle drone. Now I dont know what the base heal is for the protect bot I pulled 40% out of the air.
But I can tell that is pattern it checks to see if its heal is up if it passes it moves on to checking to see if it has the stam for it then checks for possible targets for heal. If no target can match close to how much it can heal it fails check and you miss a possible heal. Or if any of the checks fail no heal. So inc the amout your protect bot can heal for leaves the battel drones out in the cold as there hit points will have to be very low most of the time to get the heal. And we all know that battle drones drop fast when there hit points get lower then havle. -
I can only tell you what I have goten the most miles from. Sloting in them.
Before using a pet damg set and I do recomend one of the higher end pet damg sets as your goal. They are mainly damg bots with some added def. and bot healing.
I used two accurcy three damg. and one def. some people swear by swaping out the def for a heal but I think that depends on what your secondary set is. Like I have a low level bot/ff and I would probly slot it with the heal reather then the def. But on my high level Bot/Therm I have healing options for myself and my minions so I sloted with def.
