The number of people who participated in discussing this project far outweighs the number of actual volunteers, but that was expected.
Those who signed up to be Mentors, please add the N P C channel to your favorite chat tab: /chan_join "N P C". We'll start talking about promoting this over the course of the next few days. -
Final Recap (I think):
- 3 roles defined: Advocates (one for heroes, one for villains), Mentors and Neophytes.
- No official committee or leadership for project. All Mentors and Advocates have the same "weight" within the Mentor Project, although Advocates can assist in resolving issues between Mentors and Neophytes.
- Use a global channel to help coordinate things, and provide another layer to the support network for neophytes. All Mentors will be OP in this channel, named "N P C" (note the spaces). This is the only mandatory criteria in participating in this project, regardless of role.
- Propose optional mentoring partnerships between more experienced player (Mentor) and less experienced player (Neophyte) that are:
- Not enforced, but open - Either party can opt to leave at any time if it doesn't work out for whatever reasons. Mentors will have 100% control over how they can assist the newbie in their care, including what time is spent doing so.
- The mentor has no duty towards the newbie except to act as guide. As such, he/she could answer questions, help the Neophyte find a supergroup or start one, team up if schedules permit, etc. The Neophyte will be made to understand that the Mentor is not responsible for his/her enjoyment of the game, nor will there be any expectations of PLing, loot, etc.
- Mentors will be free to cover areas of CoH gaming they want with the neophytes, in private, using their judgement about the pertinence to neophyte's game style. This should cover questions re: farming and powerlevelling. To avoid un-needed discussions in the global channel we should keep these talks private. We don't want to impose our own likes / dislikes to them, yet they should be free to learn (or at least find out about) about all aspects of the game.
- Graduation ceremonies could occur every 3-4 months for Neophytes. They can then become a Mentor if they like, or move on to other activities.
- Stay in close contact with our server's P.E.R.C. and PVPEC reps, if only to let them know how things are working out in their areas of interest.
- SG will be available for experimentation on base building / SG management. Within any SGs created for/by neophytes, the tier 1 role would be that of the Advocate. Tier 2 reserved for Mentors / graduated Neophytes. All other ranks used for neophytes. Tier names will probably fluctuate due to experimentation. This will be applied to any VGs as well. Coalitions with established SGs / VGs will be considered based on overall reputation and
1) Join / be invited to N P C global channel
2) Join in a partnership with a mentor ...or not
3) Join a N P C SGs / VGs ...or not
4) For Neophytes: Graduate and move onto becoming a Mentor ...or not
If everyone currently involved, or planning to be, is satisfied (say, more so than dissatisfied), we can proceed with this. I will contact the Mentors who have already signed up and get things rolling in a few days.
Thanks for the great feedback everyone.
Looking forward to working with you in this and improving the overall gaming experience on Protector. -
I have added an option I had missed: AE Mission Design.
If you already signed up and want this option added to your profile, please let me know.
Also, the Vet badge question has been adjusted to be a drop-down list instead of a text box. The Question was also changed to be less ambiguous and everyone's information already submitted was adapted to fit.
Sorry for the inconvenience. -
Guys, we're discussing something that's already covered here... maybe I need to tweak that recap.
Mentors and Neophytes can:
1) Join / be invited to N P C global channel
2) Join in a partnership with a mentor ...or not
3) Join a N P C SGs / VGs ...or not
4) For Neophytes: Graduate and move onto becoming a Mentor ...or not
The more a player is interested in getting involved, the more options open up (hence, the more complex it can get).
At least, that's how I understood the discussion to have gone so far.
Whatever we're discussing here will not be made available to Neophytes in this form. The method and manner we'll approach them will be very different from the tone of our talks here, and even the interactions between Mentors later on.
Judging the number of further changes, questions asked, and all around interest displayed at this point, Mentorship applications should be flooding my inbox any time now.
B_L_Angel: Those questions were answered on Page 1.
Once the initial promotion has gone through, and the N P C channel gets populated, we can set up times where Neophytes can ask for personal Mentors - and so on. -
Quote:I'll try to catch you in-game or you can catch me @bamawolfie.
It's easy to join Jello Shooters and myself or someone else will give ya' an invite or instruction(I'm no' good at telling how)
That would be /chan_join "Jello Shooters".
Sry I missed your tell yesterday Turlough (saw it at lunchtime today).
Yesterday was a CSI / V / Fringe marathon with the family. -

- Allow Neophytes to "graduate" and in turn be offered a role as mentor after their contract has ended.
- Graduation ceremonies will occur every 3-4 months for Neophytes. They can then become a Mentor as well, or move on to other activities.

Quote:I help out new players a lot already - but I might be able to help with this too.
Seems this concept was even more prevalent than we all thought initially. Good.
Here you go Golden Girl: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=198945
Thanks for offering. -
I've added this to the Protector Vigilance MOTD.

Quote:How about we leave this up to the mentors as well?...Duration of Personal Mentoring Contracts: I'm not sure that we need a set duration. People learn and teach at different paces. People can move on when they're done learning or if there is nothing more to teach. If a pupil has been around for a while and we have many more students than we have teachers, it could turn into a classroom setting (with no more than seven students to a single teacher, for obvious reasons). Going straight from one student to seven would probably be problematic, but a gradual increase over time should be manageable, if it ever even comes up.
This could work even better when tied into the whole graduation concept.
Keeping the contract open in regards to duration may create a certain strain on either/both parties involved if one/both sides feel the work is done and want to move on (or switch partner).
Having the grad ceremony would work in these kinds of settings to provide a loose deadline for which to aim, set at regular intervals (say 3-4 times a year).
This way those who want to keep contact longer can do so, those who want to explore other areas can switch, and those who prefer a set limit of time can set it according to the grad ceremonies if they so choose.

Quote:I'll call it "Group Dynamics" if you don't mind then, to make it sound more general in scope.More of the social side of Group Formation, really. Though the tactical side would probably be a part of it too.
Knowing where to ask, keeping in contact with people you can rely on to join your team, things like that.
Edit: Generally speaking, teaching someone to be a team leader/star holder, or at least operate in a leading capacity when necessary.
Quote:I forgot to add this in the "Other" section, but add me in for "roleplaying" too. :P
I'm adding both in now, and will modify your forms accordingly.
Thanks for signing up. -
Quote:Already covered one option in the first pages.Another thought; how are you going to make this mentor-to-newbie project known to newbies and the like? And what about us semi-newbies, who know basics, but would very much like to learn more advanced stuff? Not to put too fine a point on it, but how's the word gonna get out?
But always open to more ideas, and especially: more volunteers to get them done. -
-
Quote:I can add those, sure.If there's still time, and it's applicable, it might help to add Advanced Combat Techniques and Group Formation to the list at the end of the form.
Yes to one, no to the other.
Edit: And by Advanced Combat Techniques, I mean things like sliding, kiting, et cetera. Things you don't normally see players do (pulling and herding being very common).
What about Group Formation? Picking specific ATs for designated tasks?
Thanks for signing up btw - you turned out to be the beta tester for that form.
EDIT: I added the first as "Advanced PvE Combat", to avoid confusion and will wait for clarification before adding the 2nd one. -

The last details for Protector's Mentor Project are getting worked on in the original thread.
This one is for those interested in participating as mentors.
http://tinyurl.com/mentorproject
Note that mentors can change their level of involvement, or stop altogether, at any time.
Thanks again to StormVyxen for that Google Docs Form template. -
All right, I'll be going with a last acronym suggestion for this, with multiple definitions:
NPC- Novice Partnership Club
- New Player Council
- Newbie Patronage Committee
- Neophyte Processing Center
If there are no other suggestions by Monday Nov. 16 I'll go with New Player Council. -
-
I had no idea this form was available / required until just now...
Since the thread got stickied it kinda hovered under the radar for me after I'd originally mentioned my interest in participating.
All signed up!
PS - I am sooooo stealing your Google Docs Form idea for my next projects that might require such a thing. -
Interesting sidenote: I don't think we cited any of the "top 100 quotes" as determined by the AFI.
