    This.

Along with a few AA settings sees to have cleared it up.

    Thanks a million!

The more I think about this, this one makes a bit more sense. EVERYTHING for a clean install, clean drivers, etc etc is in place. It HAS to be some kind of setting I am missing. I am going to try tweaking a few settings and see if I can't get it stable.

When I previously was tweaking settings, I had 'dated' sound, video etc etc drivers. I have not done much nVidia tweaking with the new drivers. FSAA didn't work, Depth of Field, Bloom, Water etc.

I will report back once I make it home from my shop

Yeah, when all this started, I set up a CoH profile to even get the game to run. Once it started running (i.e. letting me even log all the way in) I tried many many many tweaks to the profile one at a time (at least 4 hours worth of trial n error) before I hit the forums. I'm sure I hit that setting at least once, but I will focus on it again while doing some of my fixes here, changing drivers, single screen, dual screen etc.

As others have mentioned, running 2 graphics cards or just dual displays with CoX can be the source of the problem. You should also run a memory check to see that the memory isn't flaky.
Indeed you can 'hack' and 'modify' a 32-bit OS to utilize more RAM

I've run 2X Graphics cards on CoX for a long time. It used to be a 8800GS and a FX5200 using 2 totally different nVidia drivers.

I tried running with a single (if you check a few posts above I detailed it somewhere) vid card, still had the same crashing issues.

I may try to use 2 different drivers for the 2X card to see if it helps.

The memory ran 96 hours with MemTest86 and 40 cycles on Microscope. We don't take burn-in and testing lightly on our custom gaming rigs

I had actually dropped my RAM speed down to 800Mhz from 1066Mhz for better stability when all this started too.

Of note here: Windows 32-bit only supports 4GB of addressable memory. You have 1.5Gb locked up to video card space. Subtract out another 700-800Mb for other stuff running and you are down to about 1.7Gb of memory to do stuff with.

Also, as said above, DirectX 9.0c is the last WinXP supported version. There are 3rd party DirectX 10 drivers out there, but they are not blessed.

More funny things: Your profile lists -
    Registry Information for Current User
    Resolution: 1920x1080
3D Resolution: 1920x1080 (Not using renderscale)

    But your monitors say-
    Monitor: Plug and Play Monitor
    Monitor's Max Resolution: 1600,1200
    Monitor: ViewSonic VA912-4 Series
    Monitor's Max Resolution: 1280,1024

How can you be driving your monitors in a resolution they dont have available?
I actually have 4GB of RAM installed. I have successfully had windows utilize 3.9GBs into a system on a weekend with nothing better to do

That being said, 4GB RAM (2X 2GB 1066MHz, the only way to get this socket to run at 1066 is with 2X 2GB) - 1GB PCIe Card = 3GB of System RAM. I actually have had this system utilizing 3.4GB of RAM using some 'alternative methods' for gits n shiggles. There is PLENTY of RAM for CoX to run multiple instances (I've done that too to see how far the system will go using a pal's account +Test Server, 4X instances had little or no effect on the system performance).

The DX was addressed above. It is simply a leftover artifact of my attempts to get the system to run CoX stable. I removed the DX10 Drivers, but never cleaned the entry out of my registry.

I believe the issue with the screen resolution discrepancy in a generic monitor driver. I looked around ASUS for a monitor driver but never ran across one. The screen most definitely supports 1920x1080 native.

I am as baffled as you guys are. I will reset my drivers again tonight, look into reverting that registry entry for DX9 and any other 'little' tweaks I can make to get this and straight as possible. But I am about out of energy and patience. The lack of response from 'tech' support tells me they are baffled as well.....that or they are still trying to read everything I sent them....

Also, might there be a chance that there is some old video drivers (or otherwise) still on your system that you haven't yet cleaned fully?
    Thx for the concerns!!

Yeah, beware of the new Windows Essentials updates. They are stealthing in Windows Live Care. That is teh debil.

As stated above, no 'old' drivers to speak of. I removed the July drivers then went with the Sept ones about a week ago when all this ruckus started. I actually had 3-4 days of arguing with 'tech' support trying to get to the bottom of why I couldn't log into the boards with an active account. THEN I was able to start picking all the other brains around here to try n get it sorted out.

By the way, I'm using the same video driver you are, and am not having the issue, so it doesn't seem to be a problem with that specific driver version.

I'm sorry if you already tried this, but has the driver or the game itself been reinstalled to try to clear it up?
This is a clean install. Just put the system together about 2 months ago to replace my 'old' 2.16Ghz Core2Duo system.

I have only upgraded my Video Drivers once. I used a driver cleaner to do so. I had the issue with the 'old' drivers, dated in late July, as well. The new drivers did me no good thus far.

I'm not sure about the specific 3D rendering drivers.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled onto my C: drive and D: drive all to no avail. I also use an Advanced uninstaller to make sure EVERYTHING gets removed.

Still NO help from NCSoft 'tech' support.
  8. The costume selection does indeed crash me out as well. It seems to be semi-limited to windows with avatars in them, and data goign directly to my mission que/nav bar.

    Very odd stuff.....
  9. Not sure why that is showing up as such on the report, in my Task Manager they are both lowercase and both objects running under the user.

I will do some more investigating.

    Edit:

Upon further review. One of the .dll's is for nVidia, the other is from the system32 folder. So no funny business there.

  11. Looks like I may not be making a comeback after all. I forgot what a joke 'tech' support is here at NC Soft.

  12. Tech Support is a JOKE.

I sent them this info looking for help. I quoted my first 2 posts to them and sent them the link to this thread.

    Their response?

    Hi Xxxxxxxxxxx,

Thank you for contacting NCsoft Technical Support.

As a troubleshooting step please try running the game in Safe Mode. You can set this mode for the game by doing the following:

    1. Double-click the City of Heroes shortcut on your desktop.

    2. Proceed to the “User Agreement” section.

    3. Before clicking the “I Agree” button (lower right corner), place a checkmark in the box labeled “Safe Mode.”

    4. Click “I Agree.”

This will force the game to run at the minimum graphics/video settings. This is not intended as a permanent solution, but this is being requested so that we can gauge whether these lowered settings will have any effect on the problem at hand.

We look forward to your reply.

    Regards,
    Xxxxxxxxxxxx

Wow. Groundbreaking. I never would have thought to try that. Oh wait, yes I would have, in fact, I sent you a detailed message stating that I have used Safe Mode multiple times successfully with details on what worked and what didn't.........

Amazing way to run tech support. Perhaps I will go back to waiting for SW:ToR.....

That gives a better indication of what is normally running while you run the game.

On a side note, have you always been using DirectX 10 on Windows XP? As far as I am aware, it's not officially supported, and might not be reliable. (But I don't see how it would cause an issue with a particular window in the game either. lol I was just curious.)

The only thing I can tell you about the contact window is that every picture of the contact is actually another 3d environment containing that contact. It does cause problems on some systems, but I have a hard time believe your system specs are to blame this time. lol

Here is a picture for proof of concept:

Supergroup items shown in Costume and Contact's 3d environments.

Does the same freeze occur when you open the Costume selection window?
I have not tried the costume selection frame yet. I rolled up a new Tanker and haven't needed to check that yet being all of L5. I will check that in a bit (busy watching a game atm). I also had no issues entering missions.

I have found yet ANOTHER oddity to this riddle. While experimenting with AE. I accepted a mission from a contact that *gasp* did not crash me in Safe Mode. After running the mission in normal mode. I went to turn the mission in, fully expecting to crash out. I however did not crash on the turn-in to the hologram. What did happen was after turning in, accepting more dialogue, I crashed at the point of accepting the mission, with no mission window open, only the new mission requirements showed up in my nav window as part of the freeze up/lock down. After re-starting CoX, I was able to enter the mission. I have done 2-3 more missions in this manner. Running the mission, selling off Enh, training etc. then accepting a new mission, then re-logging to run it.

This is getting tiresome quickly as I am restarting the game every 5-8 minutes. Not exactly an answer, but perhaps more clues as to WTF is happening......

I also tried running the game installed on my C: drive without any different results (about 1/2 the missions from above were done from the C: drive, the other half from the D: drive). So I will rule out my RAID setup for the time being.

The DX10 was a test we ran at my shop to see if there much of a difference on a few games for our sake, a customers sake and arguments sake. Though it says I am on DX10, I am not, it is only a registry entry that has not be re-modified to it's original state (because I am lazy).

  16. Every driver is updated that can be. I will NOT be going to Service Pack 3 for XP.

As far as the 2 Video Cards. I have had that setup with CoX from the start. Running 2X video cards for dual monitors is not that 'strange'. When you run 2X monitors on 1 Card, you effectively cut that cards performance in 1/2, thus lowering FPS among everything else. All that being said, they both run on the same driver version and have NO issues with ANY other application. And yes, I have already disabled the secondary card and tried CoX, that was one of my first attempts to get rid of the original, earlier stated crashing issues.

There has to be something else missing......any and all RAID issues I HAD would result in a total system lock and not just an individual program fault. Hard to imagine a sound issue with a window/text rendering problem.

    Keep the ideas comin!
  17. Little update to this.

I tried to open the contact on a new toon. Still no luck. Then upon relog, I was immediatly booted. So I started in CoX Safe Mode and closed up the now opened contacts window. I opened and closed it several times in Safe Mode. I then talked to the AE starting contact. After his dialogue, I went to the next contact in the room, and then the game locked again on her dialogue box. I tried a number of combinations of settings and adjustments, all at 800x600 and nothing seemed to work, all resulting in multiple crashes. The last one that has me stumped is that now in CoX Safe Mode, the starting contact dialogue box now crashes after working the first time around. The safe mode crashes are a little perplexing, but at least for now I am feeling a bit more confident it is not a video card driver issue.

Of course, NONE of this helps me being able to do ANY solo missions what-so-ever, let alone try and enter a mission door. Not feeling too confident I am going to start playing again with all of these bugs when 5 other 'competing' games are working out of the box with no glitches at all.

    Very odd behavior.
  18. I wonder if I will be available/in the mood for this
  19. I've been away from CoX for over a year. Posting from my wife's account here. Trying to see if I can get back into the game by using her active account. I had a major issue of the game crashing to desktop upon selecting a server with any characters on it. It would also crash on an empty server during character creation, RIGHT at the point of moving from powers to actual character model on screen. SO I ran in safe mode and disabled all effects and narrowed it down to Depth of Field/Bloom etc. The game runs GREAT now on my new rig. However, on any and all characters, when I try to open the contacts window, a dialogue box from a contact, open a dialouge from the AE rep etc, the game hard locks with the attempted window opened partially (contacts windows starts to slide into place, barely visible) (vendor/contact/rep windows open fully, but remain blank with no text, just an outline and empty box). Outside of this, there is little issue for me so far.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm no dummy when it comes to troubleshooting/computers, I just don't want to spend 2-3 hours hashing this one out if any of you have any insights. Thx
