The Rikti had brought war to Paragon City and the war raged for seven months.
Super groups such as the Freedom Phalanx and The Dawn were to fend off the attacks, led in battle by Statesman, with tactical support from Portal Corps (research and development).
Before the war began, Lord Recluse planted moles within Portal Corps' organisation, who, amidst the distraction of war, gathered DNA samples from the hero fighters.
Few Heroes saw the Sun set on the final waves of the invasion. These Heroes were the elite and it would be their DNA samples that the insiders of Portal Corps would present to Lord Recluse.
Recluse approved the samples and had them sent, along with the various test subjects to a specially commissioned lab off the coast of the Rogue Isles, manned by scientists who had been kidnapped from around the World.
After the war, the World had been left exposed. The land was scarred and Heroes and Villains were scarce.
Statesman and Recluse began rebuilding their Cities, their defences but most importantly their armies.
The invasion would come again and no-one would be more prepared than Lord Recluse. At the dawn of the next war He would have a group of Super Villains unrivalled anywhere in the world and in November 2002 the covert project Twisted Helix was born.
Beneath the surface, away from prying eyes, the experiments would continue for five years.
Details of the experiments were absolutely classified but hearsay and rumour trickled through the Rogue Isles. Behind closed doors and in hushed voices people whispered "Genetics, Cybernetics, Mutations, Witchcraft!" In five years hearsay became rumour, rumour became myth and by 2007 the myth of Project Twisted Helix would become legend.
The Rikti were back.
Heroes and Villains stood shoulder to shoulder in combat against the invaders.
The excitement of the rumoured project Twisted Helix had dissipated and those who could not fight became restless. In their desperation to find out what project Twisted Helix was vigilantes desended upon the labs demanding to be helped, demanding to be saved!
They tore the labs apart, smashing equipment, setting the buildings ablaze searching for the now prophesised saviours of the Rogue Isles.
Out of the ashes came eight beings shrouded in smoke. The final eight successful experiments.
Some were direct clones of their Hero counter-parts. Some had their DNA enhanced by the DNA of their counter-parts. Some had been mechanically engineered from scratch. Some just had their inherant gifts nurtured.
However they came to be, they were all at the top of their class.
Recluses' vision had come to fruition, they were the strongest, the fastest and the deadliest villains ever created and with a nod of the head Recluse unleashed the beasts who stood in the burning embers of the labs.
They took to the air, land and sea with one unified thought, "Take No Prioners".
