There have been several people in this thread already who have returned to CoH and cancelled their WoW accounts. If even 1% of the "I'm cancelling" posts on their official boards are true, it's a noticeable start. It is kind of hard to predict what this will do to those who don't read the forums (much) though. I think this will impact WoW, certainly. It, by and of itself will not be the "WoW killer" but it could well be the start of what kills WoW. For me, it was more of a SC2 killer.

It depends on your definition of involvement. I get the feeling this is all coming down for a /very/ select few people at the top. Others have discussed it for sure with them, but I don't think they had any real decision making sway, much like the 2000+ pages of people saying no also holds no sway to that same select few people.
EDIT: Left a tiny word out that made things not make much sense grammatically >.> Fix't -
Quote:Sure there are boys named Sue out there, but in most cases, revealing first names also reveals your gender... But my remark wasn't at your request, it was at who it was directed to. You already know my answer (and that I don't support the change) but in general I'd like to keep that off the forums. It's actually sorta worse than that - I'm giving people a chance to reveal or not reveal their gender, which is one more choice than what Real ID provides.
EDIT: And I just watched last week's new Futurama, parts of it really seem to speak to this discussion... -

Quote:Hmmm. You are aware that most of this (possibly not the IP addresses and personal information, but certainly chat text and voice communications where they exist) will be in the EULA of just about any MMO you could care to name...? Seeing this bit of text doesn't surprise me in the slightest.
Yes, the law related clauses are in there, but there's nothing about not only recording all chat
and ingame communications, but /monitoring/ it as well.
I did like these parts though:
"Please do not use your real name or the real name of another person when selecting a user name. Please note that your user name will be available to the Internet's general public while you participate in some services, like chat rooms or message boards, so you should exercise discretion when using these services."
"Don't post your real name on a web site or message board, and never tell anyone online anything private about yourself or your family, including your phone number and address. Use screen names at all times."
"We have established and maintain reasonable security procedures to protect the confidentiality, security and integrity of your personal information. We use encryption, Secure Socket Layers, and other technical measures (such as off-site backup, security testing, and password protection), and we implement off-line efforts to further protect this information, including limiting employee access to personal information and updating our employees regarding our security practices and privacy policies."
Certainly better than sending all that stuff unencrypted, INGAME where common mods (and mods are VERY common in WoW) can display people's real IDs.
Obviously no Internet service is going to have guaranteed privacy in all cases, like law enforcement, but NC's policy is far better than Blizzard's. Even the wording is nicer (which might be construable as insidious by some), making you at least think they care about you, instead of all caps shouting "WE WILL READ AND SAVE EVERYTHING YOU SAY TO GIVE TO ANYONE WE WANT AT ANY TIME ALONG WITH YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION SUCKER!" I love how Bobby Kotick frequently uses with word "Exploit" when referring to how he treats his customers.
Venture is clearly insane though, so I was having trouble including his stuff in the conversation. As for the auction, didn't people have to nominate you last time? I vaguely recall someone else signing me up. I'd do it if I can make the date, and people want me to. Though, after last time, I might have to tack on "No one with foot fetishes can bid on me" -

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/view...opic_id=128252 Is downright scary to read through. I was kinda hoping that they'd get their heads out of their rears, and I could play SC2 in a few weeks, but even if this is stopped, nope. Bye bye Actiblizzard. -

www.pipl.com was linked on the WoW boards. Scary stuff. It has my new cell phone number who very few people have, as well as my entire family, and tons of other scary info, all from just my first and last name. Satellite photos of me working in backyard last summer. I'm freaked.
EDIT: Lordy. I hadn't seen you can search by screen name too. Thankfully my screen name is a little more unique, and none of the stuff that did actually connect with me was interesting at least. -

Quote:I'm not *that* unique, but a google for me turns up a lot. And there is way too much information up that I have no control over. Classes/labs I've taught (and from that, phone and email), race results (which not only show where I live, but *every place* I've lived since I started running races in the 4th grade...) (Oh! That's my personal record on page 2! Dang, I was fast back then :/). School information from middle school, high school, and college. Scientific papers. Events I've helped run. Photos on facebook other's have tagged me in, even though I'm not on (and avoid like the plague) facebook. Whats worse, is it gives away your friends and family's information as well. I've been trying to keep as much personal info of mine off the internet since I started using the internet. Several places I interviewed with said I would be required to get a profile on a place like LinkedIn. Well... there goes even MORE personal info out to a google search with just my name. Whats sad is, even before I DID start using the internet, a google search for my name would turn up lots of stuff. Some of us have more unique names than others. I am the only one that shows up when I google my name when spelled correctly.
Long before I really started using the internet, privacy and staying safe both online and IRL was drilled into me, and this is just scary to see. I barely used the internet till I was finishing high school, and for years before I was frequently told "NEVER give out your name or ANY other information online." I've played CoH for almost 6 years or so, and in that time, I've only given my first name to 2 people, and even then, only fairly recently, and I'm still kinda uneasy about that. Every real life friend I've played alongside has gotten a lecture about never calling me by my real name in teams, or telling anyone. It is honestly mind blowing for me that Blizzard is forcing something like this.
My bank has a bunch of "security questions" for online banking that you need to occasionally put in in addition to your password... several of these can be answered with a google search, and almost all of them can be answered with a typical facebook page (though I do not have one).
Anyway, rambling aside, this is a BAD idea.
EDIT: Hell, isn't this against most game company's codes of conducts, including Blizzard's? "Code of Conduct - NO POSTS CONTAINING PERSONAL INFORMATION ABOUT OTHER PLAYERS." -
As far as the forum aspect of this, this seems like it would keep more regular people off than trolls.

Pretty much just nixed any chance I had of getting SC2, Diablo 3, or WoW. I have a very close friend who was major excited for SC2, and she'll be letting it go as well.

Quote:I've had almost that exact same link open in my browser nonstop since that episode aired, and I agree with you completely. It's great... Especially when you see it in the context of the episode. So badass.I can imagine a few scrappers would fit this song well.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y39JCHqDCbc
I always think of a scrapper casually walking up, their cape flapping around their legs, the sky overcast (not happening Paragon I know, but still), steam rising from a street grate, and a startled pigeon taking wing. A group of baddies notices the scrappers approach, and rush him/her. The scrapper continues on, unfazed with out breaking stride, the bodies of the bad guys dropping down around him.
I skimmed most the thread, and didn't see this, so I'm assuming it hasn't been posted, but it fits great, and isn't all screechy, shouty, unintelligible like a lot of whats been thrown up.

I see pure scrappage as more zen than violent violence and brute force/rage. I think a lot of the songs I opened before posting fit a brute very well, but don't sing scrapper to me.
Took a bit to track it down, but the first song on this link (It's 2 background songs from Samurai Jack episodes) is also very much like what you're talking about.

Wait. People are talking MA/FA for candidate for weakest scrapper combo? When it was mentioned, I thought it was for strongest. While I don't think it is strongest, it is *very* awesomesauce, especially IOed like most would do around here.
