Lol no dude. To many lonely nights waiting for you to call. And someone slapped me around pretty good last night art-wise. I'm having an existential crisis. We should do a collab or something though sometime. Nod nod nod

So when I went out of town I had to sketch on paper with a pencil. Here are a couple of the doodles with some quick value shading added in Photoshop:

  3. Hug it out *******!

I think this sort of contest is good for the art community here. Wassy took on the aggravation of running one. We owe her a collective THANK YOU. There is always going to be disagreement about things like rules, personality clashes, etc. But the bottom line is that someone took it upon themselves to make something happen. Thank you Wassy (and helpers Frost, Foo, etc.).

    Pyro--

You need to understand that the world is built upon ******** as much as hard work and effort. And this is very true in art. Sometimes something thrown together in 5 minutes IS better than something that took weeks of labor. Sometimes it's not better but people just like it better. Sometimes your work simply wins or loses because of the specific audience at the time.

Art is like poker. You don't talk about what's going on in your hand. You put it out there and see if it flies. You don't give excuses or pre-judge it for the audience, because then you lose their honest reaction and the opportunity to learn from it.

    Hola,

I'm out of town, so no Livestream this week. Also I think I'll probably take this as a good stopping point since there doesn't seem to be that much interest and the Livestream service is being a real pain in the *** with the ads and whatnot.
  5. Any medium will take effort to master. If you're not willing to put any effort into learning one--obviously you're not going to get good results with it. Personally, I just find it odd that people who do end up toying with digital art programs limit themselves to trying to replicate the things they will do with a pencil on a piece of paper.

Digital art is qualitatively less than traditional art because it produces no tangible result unless you print it out.

In every other way it is qualitatively more. My brush can behave like whatever thing I want it to. It can blend and blur whatever way I want it to. And as Foo pointed out, there are a whole class of transformation and translation tools that will quickly let me correct mistakes and make changes that would be impossible with traditional media and require me to redraw things constantly.

P.P.S. I am happy to see it's not just me that does all the drawing on paper first and scans it in if it needs anything adjusted... I honestly wish there was a tool in PS that behaved like a real pencil but have yet to find one even close. I have heard people talk of custom brushes that come close but not tried any yet... anyone come across one they wouldn't mind sharing?
Why do you want to limit yourself to have it act like a pencil? The strength of an application like Photoshop is that it's basically all traditional media tools wrapped up in one. Mastery of the brushes, filters, etc. basically boils down understanding how to create a mark that suits your needs. A fairly common block to people trying to learn digital art is they take a tool that is very flexible and has all kinds of parameters that can be controlled--and they try to reduce it to something limited, like a pencil.

    An idea...

I don't think the guy's gonna make it that far if he has to rely so much on heroin to get the job done.

Here are a couple images from the stream last night. The first was a sample overview of my general process and the second is one I did during the session:

  11. The contentious thing about Poser for me is not whether it's art, but the fact that you are using materials created by other artists to do your art. Anything associated with Poser is inherently a collaboration. I've disputed this with Doug Schuler for a long time--he simply views it as another tool, like a paintbrush. I view it as getting source material from a team of highly talented professionals to work with.

Fine art photography is often a collaboration in the same way. But people seem more likely to recognize a model as being a significant contributor to the work vs. Poser which is just viewed as software.

  17. Hola, here's an update. I've made some changes based on feedback from this thread, as well as just continuing to develop the design. Still a wip but closer to a final layout/composition.

Also, I think a positive way to view this thread would be both providing feedback for artists on their work and becoming more educated and adept at what it mean to offer a useful critique.
  18. Assisace--

Thanks for the feedback. A lot of things kind of ended up the way they are because I'm still figuring out the overall design. The top/bodysuit thing she's wearing originally had straps up the sides that I later took out, the coat is supposed to be more of a hoodie but doesn't really read clearly, etc.

I'll be taking your points into consideration as I revise, I'm definitely seeing more issues with the sketch.

I do see that you missed what I said and injected something that I didn't say. I said it's uncomfortable and unnatural, not that I couldn't do it. This makes my case stronger because martial arts, while doing the moves you should be relaxed when you are in that type of position and there is no way one could be relaxed in that position, the way it is in the picture, not in your mind or how you yourself would do it...
It doesn't take any effort for me to put my hands in this position. It's not uncomfortable. And I've used postures like this in martial arts and I didn't have to tense up or anything to do them. At this point it's silly to continue focusing on this--you're objection is noted. I'm moving on.

As far as the editor comment, depending on your team's make-up, you'd actually present work before it got to the point your adding shading and spent time darkening various arious so... not really moot. Also the reason why i'd say redo it at this stage is you've gone beyond where people can generally make corrections without destroy most of the rest of the work so it's better to just start over than waste the time in fighting with what you already have.
No it is moot because you are bringing in circumstances that are not relevant to this work of art. This is a personal sketch...I am the art director..and I'm not submitting as an application for a job. As for restarting, I wouldn't need to. I continue to revise and refine elements of a drawing as I proceed all the time anyway. If you work digitally and have a proper workflow, there's no need to start over from scratch.
  20. I haven't had time today, but I'll post an update soon with some of the energy effects in it to see if any of these issues are resolved.
  21. I don't mind critique of my work. In fact there are glaring problems with it that have been commented on. But I'm finding his comments on the pose to be simply baseless. At this point, he really needs to find some way to offer up a redline or some other reference to show how he thinks it should be.

The comment about the editor rejecting it--yeah I agree. But why would I submit a wip to an editor? Nonsensical speculation to back up a point.
  22. Quote:
P.S. @Battlewraith: While I understand your frustration here man, speculation on someones physical
health or disease is no better than him telling you to start over or not be hired for a position you're not applying for.
It's superfluous at best... what say we all try and keep the focus on the what is actually being said here about art and stuff relating to critique.
That wasn't speculation Chris, that was a straight up question. If he really can't position his arms like that maybe he does have a physical issue. If that's the case he should take that into account before dismissing the way I posed the figure in such an odd way.
