  1. Classifieds

    TO: The Sinclair Syndicate.

Just a public note of thanks for always being there,
even when the viewing public doesn't know that it's you. Without your help,
some of the coolest shots in my videos would never happen (to say nothing of me
meeting deadlines). And in case you missed it, the I-12 teaser was dedicated to
you guys. Thank you. - Johanna Sinclair.

    ARTIST WANTED

Published author seeks superhero artist for politically
progressive comic book project. Speculative: no money up front, any profits to
be split 50/50. Character designs to start; full script pages will follow.
Interested parties should PM DoctorJ through the forums or @DoctorJ on the
    game.

    LOST

My pet Alpha Bomb has been lost. Last time I had him he
was on Protector. He has been last seen on Champion, but bounces to different
places. He is very sly and can go by different names, but he always responds to
Yo Gamma. If found please contact Crimson Betrayal.

    WANTED

Fan Artist to draw my character. I cannot offer much
compensation other than any of the wares I would otherwise sell on the Auction
House. If you are interested, please contact Hakuro de Killer on the Virtue
    Server.

Want to be part of the VEAT Army? Yes we are an
offshoot branch of the FUSION empire in the Protector dimension loyal only to
Ghost Widow. We are destined for greatness.

Ghost Widow has ordered my organization to form a new
sect in support of special operations. I will recruit within our ranks as well
as go outside of our known coalition. These chosen members will go to an
academy for training as various Arachnos soldiers. While I do not like to be
told how to run FUSION, Widow assures me that I will be rewarded for forming
    this group.

My first order of business is to choose villains among
my organization that display some of the following qualities: Mind control,
knowledge of poisons, stealth, acrobatics, weapons fighting, and most
importantly do not display fear and that would die if I ordered them to do
such. I have at least 20 in mind from my 150 Villain organization that fit this
criteria. Over the next few weeks I will begin listing them in preparation for
    training.

This training will consist of a series of trials and
strike forces ordered by Ghost Widow. More to follow soon.

    Want to know more?
Please come to the Veat Army Project.

  2. Base Showcase

    Scratching
    Post
    & Unholy Brotherhood

Who is your base designer and who are your supergroup leaders?

Heroside, Fire Kittie is our designer and Jag-Wired and Fire Kittie are our
leaders. Villainside, Kittie Of Doom is our designer and Electryxx and
    Galvisius are the leaders.

What server is your base on?

Both bases are on the Victory server.

    When was your supergroup established?

The hero SG was established on April 4th, 2007, and the villain SG was
    established on February 10th, 2008.

How many players are in your supergroup?

The hero SG has about 20 and the villain SG has about 10.

What is the approximate value of your base?

The hero base is worth about 10 million prestige, and the villain base is worth
    about 1 million prestige.

How much time do you spend working on your base? How much time have you
    invested so far?

Probably about 3-5 hours a week, unless I get an idea. Then I can spend as many
as 3-5 hours a day until I get it right. Our hero base in its current form took
about a month, but I redo it every other month or so.

The villain base was only started about a month ago and so far has only taken a
    few hours time.

What is your favorite base item? Least favorite?

My absolute favorite item is the magic desks. My least Favorite is also magic
desks. I love them and hate them. Maybe soon we won't have to jump through
hoops to make things pretty and functional.

What is your favorite thing about base editing? Least favorite?

My favorite thing about the editor is that it allows me to be creative. The
only thing I don't like about editing is pathing, but as long as I am careful I
can get around most of it.

What is the highest thing on your wish-list for new base items?

The ability to float items without using a Magic Desk.

If you could give just one piece of advice to a new base editor, what would
    it be?

Be patient. If something doesn't work, take a break, take a nap and then try
again. If that doesn't work, beat your head against the wall and scream for
help on BBI. Someone will save you.

  3. The People On...

    Arachnos Soldiers vs. Midnight Club

To follow up on my last article, I decided that my newfound trap for heroes and
villains, the Pocket D, would be a good place to start to find another hopeful
to interview. After my last article I received some interesting mail from more
than one Arachnos soldier, saying that they felt as though they were not being
properly represented in this community we call Paragon City and the Rogue
Isles. With that in mind, I attempted to find a “Destined One.” No dice. I was
eluded at every turn. As I moved to a bar above the affectionately named
“Monkey Cages” I was joined by a Night Widow. Not one to pass up an opportunity
like this, I initiated the conversation…

    Scoop Man: ‘Scuse me…

    Night Widow Scourge: Yes?

SM: Scoop Man, I work for the local paper around these parts. Perhaps you’ve
    heard of me?

NWS: Why, yes. Actually I have. I do try to keep informed of the more current
    events.

SM: Excellent, mind if we have a chat? I’ll buy you a drink. Scoop Man orders a
    water for himself.

NWS: Oh, by all means, of course. The Night Widow removed her helmet. I’ll
have a water. I’m on duty after all.

SM: On duty? You folks at Arachnos have shift hours?

NWS: Of course. Although we are always vigilant and an ever present force, we do
have to sleep and maintain some semblance of a personal life. Neither of which
can be done on the clock.

SM: I see. Do you feel like many people don’t treat you like a regular person
underneath all that armor? Like they think you aren’t a real person like them
    because of Arachnos?

NWS: Oh, constantly. The “Destined” and heroes alike treat me as unworthy, even
though I’ve been a member of both classifications in my life.

SM: Is there much conflict within the Arachnos ranks and the “Destined” and
    those who aren’t?

NWS: It’s an excessively complicated subject. There are those who fall in line,
and there are those who fight us. Even better are the ones who give up on the
“destined” pipedream and enlist within Arachnos itself.

SM: Do you feel as though the “pipedream” is just that? A dream?

NWS: Personally, yes. The Destined Prophecy is something so many are scrambling
over right now, but in reality if there’s only one, why waste your life on such
    a gamble?

SM: Touché. What does Arachnos think about the Midnight Squad? Do they find them
as more of an ally or a threat or something else?

NWS: The Midnight Squad would undoubtedly side with Paragon in a conflict, but
truly we’ve little to fear from them.

SM: Is there something to fear at all? I though the Midnight Squad was “neutral”
for lack of a better term.

NWS: So is Vanguard, yet you see Arachnos troops being attacked by heroes
constantly in a warzone they “regulate” as neutral. The Midnighters just give
off a similar feel. Their true allegiance is nearly palpable on the air.

SM: Do you feel Arachnos and those pursuing the “Destined” path are getting the
    short end of the stick?

NWS: It could be said, but I wouldn’t say it. The strands of fate are a web
strung betwixt our fingers and will be used to exact our will.

SM: Do you feel those in the Midnight Club that are heroes see themselves above
    everyone else?

NWS: From what little I’ve dealt with them, no. I can say they seem fair to a
point. Any particularly troublesome heroes don’t get that trait from being a
    Midnighter, I suspect.

SM: I see. How do you feel about the battle that is still going on despite all
of this? The one between “good and evil” as the public likes to call it. Do you
think that new Arachnos soldiers and the Midnighters will have an effect on it?

NWS: Oh, most definitely, Arachnos far more so than the Midnighters. New
training regiments have incorporated squad tactics that are especially
effective against threats, metahumans or not. These aren’t the foot soldiers
the capes are used to fighting.

SM: How do you feel getting flak from the public because of Arachnos? You are
after all fighting to conquer the world as well as taking advantage of the city
    during the new Rikti conflict.

NWS: People these days do not understand that our methods are necessary to bring
about a perfect world. Eggs must be cracked to make an omelet, after all.

SM: Nice Fight Club reference. Well thank you for your time. I think this will
give the public the view they never had on Arachnos before.

NWS: ...I never saw that film. Hmm. I do hope it gives them a better, more
informed view. It may save some lives.

SM: Indeed it may. Thank you again.

    NWS: Of course.

With a feeling of accomplishment and a full bladder from the water, I returned
to my luxurious rat-hole apartment in Kings Row. Frankly, I believe that these
two “factions,” if they can be classified as that, will definitely have an
effect on the struggle between the heroes and the so called “villains.” I am
not one to use that word lightly for as a journalist I believe that everyone
has a reason for doing something, reputable or not. Also, this encounter gave
me a new perspective on the Arachnos organization and a more intimate look at
them from a prominent soldier. Join me next time when I get the scoop!

    The
    Justice Knights: Division and Reunion
    (pdf)

    By
    Sin_Stalker

Welcome to another edition of the Justice Knights. Sin_Stalker and his super
group are working hard to present us with as many new episodes to the
chronicles of their characters as quickly as possible.

The cool thing is that it comes off so well. Much like the last comic produced
by this talented team, it is made by blending carefully positioned screenshots
(sometimes painstakingly acquired) with Comic Book Creator and possibly some
demo-editing software thrown into the mix. It looks rather superb in the end,
    again.

In this story we meet another member of the group, a humanoid creature that goes
by the name of Spykefury. While the Justice Knights are finishing up a tour of
the group's base for the newcomers, Spyke shows up and tears through to the
teleporter, frantically working to get back to Earth. The rest of the group
grows concerned and after he teleports away, they follow to see what is
troubling their ally. What ensues is another dangerous adventure, one that
shows that a villain doesn't need to be "personal" to be a true arch enemy.

In the end, I say this is a worthy read, even with the long load time.
Sin_Stalker apparently got tired of the other comic hosting services and struck
out on his own. I can't fault him for that, though it does seem to be the one
thing throwing a wrench into the presentation. Hopefully, with time and support
from the community, such wrinkles can be ironed out, and we can peruse his work
    with greater ease.

    Multi-Media Showroom

    By EmperorSteele

Hello, dear reader! In this new bi-weekly series, I’ll be tossing out links and
info regarding a section of our community that the Scoop has so far been unable
to address: The Multi-Media forum, and all its video and comic-goodness. I’ll
also be taking a look at some fanart once in a while, though given how various
pieces are often scattered around the Scoop, this will be a secondary focus. As
a note, most of the items linked have been around for weeks, or more, given a
combination of both the Scoop’s publishing schedule, and real life concerns.
This article is more of a showcase, rather than a “what’s new” sort of deal.
    With that in mind…

First on the agenda is a reminder: On July 1st, Lighthouse made an announcement
    here
about a Co* based machinima contest, with some pretty awesome
prizes at stake (like a car loaded with video games). The deadline is August
10th, giving you just another month to finish! The theme is “Get in touch with
your dark side”, so tap into the darker part of your psyche and get to work!

    A couple months ago,
    this thread
was posted, with the idea of making a video based on the
    Discovery Channel’s insta-classic
“I Love the World/Boom De Yada” commercial
    . Well, Ashcraft responded,
    with
    this amazing, well-synced gem
. It’s a nifty, catchy song, and the video
footage goes perfectly with everything in it. A few other forum goers are
trying their hand at it as well, so stay tuned!

Last month, Drmidnight announced the return of his webcomic,
    The Neighborhood Watch
, which is pretty well put-together. The
inclusion of TWO art types: Normal screenshots and "Pulp" (Outlines added to
everything) makes for a nice touch. Crisp screenshots, good angles, and
competent use of panel and word balloon placement help show a story which, just
by itself, is really good. The story doesn’t NEED visuals.. it doesn’t NEED to
be a comic, but the images are a well-appreciated bonus! Updates are every
    Wednesday.

Last but not least, Kranny made his video debut with
    this awesome, almost epic showing
    . High-quality captures, an awesome
song, and it’s LONG. It’s just a tad repetitive, in that the majority of the
footage is from various TFs, such as the STF, ITF, LGTF, and Eden Trial, along
with a generous helping of Shadow Shard footage. However, if you’re not
familiar with those TFs, there’s no way to tell. The icing on the cake is the
cinematography, with various pan overs, giving this video a touch of class
above that of your average fan video.

That’s about it for this installment. Join us again in 2 weeks as we explore…
well… I don’t know yet, but it’s sure to be fun!

    ---

If you have a Co* based comic or video you’d like showcased in the Scoop, give
Emperorsteele a holler. I can’t guarantee I’ll get to everything (given time
and space constraints), but I’ll do my best.

  5. In the Red

    All The Wrong Places

"Tis better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all." I have no
clue who said that, so I'm gonna chalk it up to Sun Tzu. But I'd rather love
and keep loving than to lose them. That's why they're chained up in my
basement. Unfortunately, not all of us have that luxury. Here are a couple of
ads I stole from the dating classifieds to help my lonely readers. Who said
Valentine's Day had to be in February?

John: I love a woman who likes to cut loose. Y'know, get angry and just break
stuff. I also wouldn't mind if she had some technical knowledge, because, and I
hate to say I'm high maintenance, I like when a woman helps me out. Mainly
because these claws make it hard to do stuff, like hold items and fix my
Excelsior feeder. I'm not sure if you guys are gonna want to keep this keyboard
when I'm done, because I put some holes in it. Oh, and she should also like to
    party.

Lyndsey: I like men who are very spiritual. Like pure of soul and something like
that, you feel me? He also shouldn't be afraid of horns or thorns or dislike
demons. I hate it when men run, but once you get your hooks in them, they want
to stay. Also no allergies to hellfire. I dated this one Hellion who just got
all swollen up until he became a Skull and stopped dating me. So just find me a
priest or something. Also no people with Mu heritage.

Kile: NEED WOMAN WORD BOX GIVE WOMAN NOW

Ben: Searching: Mate. Like: Intelligence. Fortitude. Government secrets.
Dislike: Vanguard. Federal agents. Angry mobs. Pickles. Requirements: Open
minded. Happy. Strong genetic code. Personal information: Smart. Funny.
    Nigerian royalty.

Sara: I totally like guys who play with fire. Just set a building on fire and
watch it burn or something, and we can just relax in front of the blaze with
your friends. Just give me some alone time. I have some friends who totally
wear masks and do stuff. Just understand that I will hang out with other guys,
but they won't be able to see me with the helmet and the mind control won't let
them encroach on me. I prefer mind over might I guess.

Maggie: I like strong healthy men. A nice guy with a healthy physique who's not
afraid of needles. I do a lot of... unorthodox doctor work for free, so it's
kinda community service. Just making humanity a better race. And I do some work
at home or out, so sometimes I bring it home with me. Please don't open those
crates. Squeamish men who don't like strong odors need not apply.

Nate: I like discipline. My ideal woman is one who will stand by me, and be
proficient in the use of a submachine gun. I take a lot of pills to help me in
work, and I just have some problems living outside of my job's uniform. But the
important thing is that I'll always be loyal to you and willing to eliminate
anything that's a threat. It also helps if you understand fascism or aren't
    afraid of super-soldier armies.

Well, peachy. The cream of the crop of the Isles and Paragon's most eligible
bachelors. I can't possibly see why they're single at all. And if you believe
that, I have secret details on a Nemesis plot for sale. Until next time, send
me hate mail. In the meanwhile, I'm gonna look up Maggie. Sounds like she knows
    her way around a bonesaw.

    Shock and Awe

There's been a lot of speculation on what "The Coming Storm" may entail for the
future. After the release of "The Midnight Hour", I can vouch that a few things
have been stormed lately. Mainly, Siren's Call and Recluse's Victory.

The Stormtroopers of Recluse - Arachnos Soldiers and Widows

There have been mixed expectations with the Villain Epic Archetypes, and I
wanted to hold off on writing this article until I had experienced firsthand
what the Soldiers of Arachnos could offer in a PVP zone. The results are in,
and they surpassed my personal expectations.

The Arachnos Widows scream PVP like a EM/Nin Stalker. From the moment of
creation, they have access to ranged Toxic DoT and Defense that only gets
better as they level. The Widow paths both offer Psionic damage as well as
further shielding, but the not-so-clear advantage actually lies with the
Fortunata branch. In the higher level zones, a Fortunata can confuse-lock small
teams of heroes with a little skill and deft maneuvering, and if faced with a
lone hero, can overcome a Breakfree or Tier 9's like Elude.

The Arachnos Soldier lags a little ways behind, starting out with Smashing and
Lethal damage. Later access to Energy and Toxic damage helps, but it's the Bane
Spider's DeBuffs that really let the AT shine.

Either Epic Archetype seems built for kiting melee archetypes to death, and they
do this rather well. Going with the Bane Spider or Night Widow allows one to
effectively make use of damage spikes to overcome a target's resistance, then
retreat a little ways and open up with ranged attacks.

Sadly, the Omega Maneuver is rather easy to avoid in an open zone. If one goes
Crab Spider, taking the Web Grenade is an absolute must. It will allow you to
lock down enemy movement in most situations, and allow your summoned robots to
    keep up and contribute.

The real test of the Villain Epic Archetype is, of course, hero Controllers and
Blasters. The Fortunata's Confuse can make quick work of these archetypes if
they aren't careful, and with some care, a Crab Spider can utilize his minions
while breaking line of sight in order to force the heroes to expend their
alphas, and then move in for a kill.

The Night Widow and Bane Spider have better luck with stalker-like tactics,
running in with a stealthed alpha strike, and finishing their opponent as
quickly as possible. Most Heroes have much practice against sneak attacks,
however, so if you are planning on using your stealthy VEAT in a PVP zone,
invest in a +Stealth recipe. Celerity seems to be the current +Stealth of
    choice.

Superspeed has always been a solid choice for PVP, and the VEATs seem no
exception. Pairing with Superjump gives the best results. With the builds for
VEATs being rather open to modification, you can actually still take both pools
and still be viable for PVP.

The one weakness that can be found in all the Villain Epic paths is Endurance.
The VEATs eat up endurance like a SUV eats up gas. Against Endurance draining
foes, this problem is multiplied. Be wary of Ice tanks especially - theri
quickly recharging end drain AoE paired with their aggro auras -Acc/-Dam is a
deathtrap for VEATs. If you find yourself in such a situation, kiting still
works. Don't let them into melee.

Against regular foes, the AT's are rather forgiving. They have the HP to weather
some of the heavy hitters from Heroside. Be careful though, most branches offer
nothing in the way of a self-heal. Serum is the exception rather than the rule.

Really, with the variety built into the Villain Epic Archetypes, you can change
up your powers too much for a Hero to be able to assume what you can and cannot
do. The VEATs thrive on the Fog of War. Experiment. Find what playstyle works
    for you, and have fun!

  6. Legacy Pieces

Over the years City of Heroes has gone through a lot of updates to the costume
creator. Most of these were additions of new pieces, but every now and then
items are changed, and these changes are not always received well by the
players. Sometimes a piece is updated, but other times, they are simply
removed, generally with no explanation or warning.

Here are three legacy pieces - two from my own account, and another that was
    prepared for me.

    Pointy Ears

The pointy ears used to be a head option, along with hats and masks. Many of us
loved these ears, but they were replaced with a larger spectrum of ear choices
and put into their own category. The closest replacement, now called Elf Ear,
looks bizzare to some, as if the ear was normal once and was just stretched out
to a point. While the old pointy ears may not have been perfect, we are now
left with a pointy ear that leaves a little to be desired and old costumes that
cannot be changed unless we want to lose the old pointy ears. Below are the two
types of ears, on the left are the original pointy ears, and on the right are
    the new Elf ears.

    Slit Skirt

The original skirts hugged the body differently, were slightly longer, and had
patterns applied to them in a different way. Lets have a look at the old slit
skirt vs. the new slit skirt. In the image below you will see the old one on
the top, and the new one on the bottom. The length of the skirts aren't hugely
different, but if you look closely you will see the old one went down just a
bit further. The shape of the slit has changed slightly as well. It was
actually a smoother cut than the cut of the new one, and you can see how it
used to hug around the butt more at the top. Heck, it was even shiny at the
    butt!

    Baggy Pants

We used to have baggy pants that allowed you to choose a pattern for both the
top half and the bottom half of the pant. This made for some nice customizing,
but one day they just poofed into thin air and we were left with baggy pants
where the pattern is applied to the entire piece. Below you can see the
comparison of the two using the blend pattern. The top pants are the old ones
with the blend pattern on the upper half of the leg, below that is the new
pants with the blend pattern on them. This is a huge difference when
customizing your pants. No longer can you put two patterns on your baggy pants.

    Content Watch

It's time for another episode of the Content Watch and this time the subject is
heroside, level 30-40. I know I am only publishing these articles once a month,
but it seems that there is a lack of interest from players to post their
opinions in the boards on the PvE content for my articles. Still, I would like
to thank the five players who posted their opinions this time and you can read
    it
    here
    .

From what I could read, the level 30-40 range on the blue side is severely
lacking in new content, especially for some older players. The level 30-40
opens up Founders Falls, Brickstown, Eden, Crey's Folly and, at level 35, the
Rikti War Zone and Cimerora. A lot of players seem to level from 30 to 35 in
Croatoa with the 2 contacts and the Katie Hannon task force and tend to get
stuck at 35 on what to do to get XP. The most common avenue right now seem that
players are just skipping the level 35-40 content in favor of scanner mission
    teams and the Imperious TF.

Croatoa missions are always popular content, since they are short story arcs
with all missions in the same zone. Unfortunately, the enemy groups that you
fight in the 30-34 range are limited to Cabal and Red Caps. The two newest
zones offer little in the way of story arcs. Levantera has some missions, but
she doesn't offer enough for someone to level to 40. Cimerora has nothing to
offer story arc wise. Both zones do have a contact with unlimited repeatable
missions, but these can quickly get boring.

Old school contacts still give their regular missions and story arcs, but I
found a lot of players don't like to run them for a number of reasons: the arcs
are too long, traveling 2-3 zones to a door gets annoying, more than often you
get sent to a hazard zone with a high level requirement (so if you have
sidekicks in your team you are forced to ask them to leave or pick another
mission), and you always fight the same villain group for 15 missions,
alternating kill all, click glowie and rescue hostage.

Some story arcs still have a good back story, like the Crey Revenant Hero
project (Gordon Stacy, level 35-40) that explains the origin of the Crey's
Paragon Protector and Steven Sheridan's arc explaining a few things about the
Rikti. You get to fight a few AVs in these arcs like Terra and the Envoy of
Shadows, but these two arcs are generally unpopular because they pit heroes
against Circle of Thorns and Devouring Earth, both of which are a real pain in
    this level range.

This level range opens up four Task Forces (Manticore, Numina, Lady Grey and
Imperious) and the Eden and Sewer trials. The first two are run mostly for the
Task Force Commander accolade. I think that Manticore and Numina's TFs could be
improved due to lack of variety. Presently, each of these TFs send you against
a single enemy faction: Crey for Manticore and Devouring Earth for Numina. The
Eden trial has been labeled one of the best trial in CoH. The map is unique and
the unique design of the final foe makes it very interesting.

The two newest Task Forces (Imperious and The Lady Grey) are popular, especially
the ITF (because it is brand new). Both offer good XP gain and I see many
players running them just to gain a level or two in about 2 hours. The ITF send
you against a brand new villain group in a brand new zone with some new unique
maps to explore and fight in. The Lady Grey is offering you a chance to fight
for the survival of humanity against the Rikti invaders and a chance to fight a
great threat known as the Hamidon. You also get to face some old foes you've
    seen before.

The final opinion on this is that the level 30-40 content in City of Heroes is
in need of something new. 30-35 is fine with Croatoa, but it seems that many
players are trying to breeze through these levels to get to the 40s and start
the AV contacts of Peregrine Island. Finally, I would like to thank everyone
that has posted in the Content Watch thread and I hope there will be a bigger
turnout next time. For my next article I will be covering villainside level 30
to 40. Remember to enjoy the game and don't take it too seriously.

  7. The City Scoop

    Paragonian Knights

    Summer Bash '08

The Event Heard Around the VirtueVerse!

You couldn't walk down the street in Paragon City with out hearing about this
party. Everyone was talking about it, and it was going to be big. "The Party of
the Year," people were saying. And they were right. It was the Paragonian
Kights Annual Summer Bash 2008! You couldn't go to a zone where it wasn't being
promoted, not just by the Knights themselves, but by other players!

As a fellow Paragonian Knight, I wouldn't have missed this event for the world.

The party took place in Talos Island, on Spanky's Boardwalk, east of the Arena.
Due to my time difference I took naps all day so I could get up at 1am and
party until 9am. I logged on at one and decided to head over to Spanky's
Boardwalk to see what was happening there A pre-party had started with our DJ
Surburban Hell getting requests played out (of which I did many). There was
some RP going on, and players talking about the game and other things in life.
When a new player showed up without their bathing suit on, they headed to Icon
and came back within 5 minutes with some skin showing, ready to party.

By the time the party officially started, the crowd was massive. It was so
massive that I had to turn down some settings on my PC to accommodate the mass
of heroes that just wanted to have a good time. When the party started DJ
Random took control of the helm - starting off with some nice tunes and then
cranking it up. The cast of Circle of Jerks Radio podcast was also covering the
event. Throughout the night the DJs announced that Radio For the Win had hit a
staggering three digit listener count for the first time ever. They were
literally speechless at the fact. With the music going, the party kicked off.
Throughout the night there were multiple Contests and Prizes to be won, which
prompted a huge turnout. Talos got so busy that Talos 2 spawned, and we even
had a visit from the Ghost Ship. Fortunately, they were just passing through,
and nobody was harmed. Here are the Event Winners:

    Trivia Winner:

    * Draco Templaris - Won 2 1.25-1.5 lb Maine Lobsters

    Golden/Silver Age Costume Contest:

    * 1st Place: Mos Vex - Won art commission by Juggertha

    * 2nd Place: Matt King - Won 20 million influence

    * 2nd Place: The Antic - Won 20 million influence

    * 3rd Place: Draco Templaris - Won 10 million influence

    Swimsuit Contest:

    * 1st Place: Miss Anomaly - Won art by Knightbane

    * 2nd Place: Atomic Comic - Won 20 million influence

    * 3rd Place: Atlas Angel - Won 10 million influence

    PvP Contest

    * Controller FFA Winner: Bishop Creed FF

    * Tanker FFA Winner: Chogori

    * Scrapper FFA Winner: Knightward

    * Defender FFA Winner: Oksah

    * Blaster FFA Winner: Booster Blue

FFA Winners won one of an assortment of Unique IOs

    * Gladiator FFA Winner: Bishop Creed - Won an entire set of Apocalypse IOs

The party grew so large that even a villain heard about it and checked it out.
That's right. Ghost Widow herself crashed the party, and had everybody on edge,
scared that she might try to pull something. After a few witty quips back and
forth Ghost Widow joined in on the festivities and even gave gold Titles to the
attendees. The Grae Knight and the DJs received their own gold titles for
acting as Host and Radio DJ. She even made a few requests to the DJ to play
some music and boy does she have taste!

This party was an event not to be missed, and if you did miss it, join The
Paragonian Knights next year for the Summer Bash '09 event.

I know I'm not the only one who had a great time. Check out what some others had
    to say about the party:

@devilchilde - "The AT Free For All matches were great! The Blaster Fight was a
    fantastic battle!

The Gladiator Battle was a long process, but the victories were well earned."

Aria July - "The party was amazing, and I am absolutely honored to be apart of
    such an incredible group."

This will be the be-all, end-all thread for all things Jerk Radio. Now, this episode that went up today has actually been done for about 2 weeks or so, but that's all beside the point. Anyway, the news that we discuss in it is no longer timely, but that makes it even better as the EPIC FAIL episode. In this episode, Trace Evans, OHakubi, and Adam Nelson berate a whiny kid for the devs closing The Testing Room to fix a problem in the game. Then we read bios. Good ones, bad ones, and AWFUL ONES. It's sort of a thing where we read stuff that doesn't make the cut. I'm also considering instituting a "finders fee" program. If you send us a bio, news thing, or whatever that we end up using on Jerk Radio, we'll give you a shout-out! So E-mail us, you masses!

Anyway, as for the episode, go here.

I think the Rock Bottom Brewery would be a good fit for something on Friday night.

  12. At GenCon we were able to arrange an unofficial get together that about fifty people showed up to have dinner together.

We nabbed a big room at the Hard Rock Cafe, only caveat to having the space was folks had to order dinner and drinks.

Ideally we should not schedule this on Saturday night as that is the night Guild Wars is doing their big gathering and I do believe I am requested to attend to assist in the event.

Having never been to Seattle you all will need to help be my eyes and ears, I am more than willing to contact establishments and make reservations if we can find a space, time, and start to get a rough count. Ultimately I'll have more time to focus on this when Comic Con is over.

Keep me posted with ideas and possible locations.

    Hey gang,

I have been reading along today and just want to report it is fully in the community hands on this event to organize a get together.

We had to make a few choices this year, and PAX while getting some of the same goodies as Comic Con will not be getting an official party or get together.

So... all that said, where do WE want to party?

So do "some of the same goodies" include a special in game item like Comic Con goers are getting?

  22. Advice

    The PvP SuperTeam

Time for another SuperTeam. If you recall from my previous articles, a SuperTeam is a carefully crafted themed team designed to roll over mobs quickly and easily. The ATs, power sets, and even individual powers are chosen to provide maximum team buffs plus AoE debuffs and damage. This week I'll talk about a new PvP (Player Versus Player) SuperTeam I plan to run really soon. In fact, take a look in the PvP Questions, Guides, and Builds forum and you'll probably see my thread.

Now, this isn't a SuperTeam for PvPing. I don't have a magical combination of ATs and powers that will let a team win every PvP match. It's a SuperTeam for leveling up PvP oriented characters. If you want to level up a PvP char fairly quickly with other PvP oriented people in a PvP friendly environment, then this SuperTeam is for you.

First, what ATs and powersets belong in this SuperTeam? Since you can't mix heroes and villains, this SuperTeam article will focus on heroes. Take a look at the Test PVP League Sign Ups for a clue. It's all about ranged damage, buffs, debuffs, and mezz. Hero side, that means Blasters, Defenders, and Controllers. Sure there are a few Tankers and Scrappers, but we won't have them in the SuperTeam. No Kheldians either. No one even bothered to enter one in the event above. That's just the way PvP is.

Now, I can't just allow ANY Blasters, Defenders, or Controllers. That way lies madness! The SuperTeam needs some basic things in terms of AoE damage and team buffs, and that requires certain ATs and power sets. So I'll model this somewhat after the Scrapper SuperTeam.

We want AoE damage, and Blasters with the Fire Blast primary are the perfect PvP oriented choice. They get AoEs in Fire Ball, Rain of Fire, and Fire Breath all at low levels. But they also get some fast activating and high damage attacks, which is why they are great for PvP. There isn't a Secondary powerset that goes both ways, but Energy Manipulation is usually viewed as the best PvP oriented secondary. The core damage component of the team should be Fire/Energy Blasters. I think 3 chars in a team of 8 is a minimum.

Empathy Defenders play a key role in the Scrapper SuperTeam and in many PvP teams, so we'll want a couple of those. Fortitude plus lots of stacked Leadership: Maneuvers will cap the Defense of everyone in the team. Clear Mind will keep everyone from getting mezzed. Heals will keep everyone alive. At higher levels 2 Empaths can alternate and maintain Recovery and Regen Aura on the team all the time. That means we want at least 2 Empaths in a team of 8.

That leaves a few team slots open for other chars. There are plenty of different builds that work well in PvP, and they can fill those extra spots. Defenders are preferred because they bring the most to the team for PvE, but Controllers and Blasters are welcome as well. My "perfect" PvE SuperTeam of PvP chars would probably consist of 4 Fire/Energy Blasters, 2 Emp/* Defenders, and 2 Sonic/Sonic Defenders. Now, I haven't kept a close watch on the PvP forums, so I don't know if Powerset Proliferation or an evolution in PvP tactics has changed which sets are good for PvP, but I'm sure someone will tell me if I'm off base.

Characters should be built for SuperTeam oriented PvE (Player Versus Enemy, meaning regular mobs controlled by the CoH servers). That means everyone needs to take Leadership for Maneuvers somewhat early. Add in Assault and Tactics later, and the team will be doing awesome damage. The Empaths can completely ignore their secondary early on, but they'll eventually want some attacks or they'll get bored. No need for anyone to take PvP oriented powers like Phase Shift during the SuperTeam. Once you hit 50, respec to your ideal PvP build with everything you want.

The PvP SuperTeam will level 1 to 50 rather differently from other SuperTeams. PvPers are often interested in getting every edge possible. That includes Accolades like Task Force Commander for doing the 6 main TFs. PvPers also like the unique loot that comes from TFs. I expect this SuperTeam to be very TF oriented. I wouldn't be surprised if people level up from 12 to 50 almost entirely in TFs.

Feel free to grab a few friends and try this, and PM me if you have any questions on it. Better yet, check the PvP forum linked above. I plan to run a PvP SuperTeam on Freedom a couple nights a week. The emphasis will be on organizing lots of TFs with balanced teams.

    Next Week: The PermaDom SuperTeam

  23. Food
    & Recipes

    Dearest Readers,

I wasn't able to finish my article on time
for the veggie meals. Sorry about that, but as of right now I've been MIA, due
to real life being crazy at this time. I am getting ready to go on vacation in
a couple weeks! I thought I could keep up with both the Scoop and getting
things ready, but even more stuff came up. Never fear! I will see you all when
I get back! Until then have fun, and enjoy these German recipes from EnnVee!

    - Mistress Noire

    Sauerbraten

    You will need:

A large crock or bowl for marinating the roast

A large, tightly-covered kettle or Dutch Oven for cooking

4-pound lean beef roast (Preferably rump or eye of round)

    Mix together in saucepan:

    2 C. red wine vinegar

    2 C. red wine

    2 C. water

    1 large onion, sliced

    2 bay leaves

    3 cloves

    10 peppercorns

Heat marinating mixture to a simmer, then turn off heat. Pour mixture over meat
in a large bowl, and allow it to cool. Cover and refrigerate for 3-5 days.
Remove meat from marinade and drain fully. Strain and keep the marinade. Brown
the roast in enough oil to cover the bottom of the Dutch Oven. (Dredging the
roast in flour before browning will help keep the oil from spattering.) Slowly
add 2 cups of the marinating liquid. (Save 1 cup of the liquid for the gravy.)
Reduce heat, cover the kettle and allow to simmer for 2 ½ hours, or until roast
is tender. Remove it to a large platter, keeping it warm.

To make the gravy, thicken the cooking liquid with flour, cornstarch, or crushed
gingersnaps. If more flavor is needed, add some beef base or bouillon cubes.

The Sauerbraten should be sliced and served with spaetzles, potato dumplings, or
    mashed potatoes.

    Potato Dumplings

    INGREDIENTS:

6 medium potatoes, peeled, boiled, and cooled

    1/2 Cup flour

    1 1/2 Tsp. Salt

    2 eggs

    DIRECTIONS:

Grate the potatoes fine, or put them through a ricer. Add the eggs, flour, and
salt, and mix well together. Roll this dough into 1-inch balls, and drop them
into boiling water. Gently boil them for 10 minutes. Lift them out with a
slotted spoon and put them into a warmed serving bowl; keep them warm while
    making crumb topping or gravy.
