I was talking in a PVE point of view and not from a PVP when it came to Teaming. Even though PVP is not my thing I have done a bit of it with my Dom in BB & WB and done the Team PVP. I am well aware of the problems of Dominators in PVP, namely being Break Frees. I've used the hit and run (carrying a couple BFS myself for stuns) tactics and have had some success in PVP though I am far from an expert.
If PVP is your thing, I would agree and would never recommend a Dominator (or for that fact even a MM). If PVP is your #1 concern I would skip on the Corruptor and Brute and just roll a Stalker. If you don't want to do the Stalker, I would just go with a Brute. -

I stand by the fact that many people argue in the dominator-effectiveness debate simply to argue, and often times seem to stop comprehending what is said upon realization the topic is not in line with their own opinons. To be fair, probably a lot of it goes on from the other camp as well, however the side I seem to notice the most is the side that disagrees with me - for no other reason than I tend to notice replies to my comments more often.

I would also say that there are the "anti-doms" that just like to argue about Doms being gimped and find it hard to believe that there are people out there that do have Doms that can solo well and do contribute to both small and large teams.
IMO part of the problem is this is a very subjective manner. There are too many variables such as power selection, slotting, player experience, player tactics, Level etc that muddy up the arguement. You can have one player that can very successfully play his Dom and on the other end you can have another person have nothing but problems with their Dom. It's all a matter of perspective. -
IMO part of the problem is that how much a Dominator contributes to a team is very subjective and varies not by power choice but also from player to player. Different players have different playing styles and that factors into it. But for my Fire/Fire Dom both in small 3-4 person teams and in large 6-8 person team I have yet to see someone complain about how I don't do my "fair share". In fact I get told that thought Doms were "gimped" until they saw my Fire/Fire in action.
I am able to do a decent amount of controlling with Char, Cinders, and FireFlash. Bonfire has saved teams more times than I can count when we needed to retreat. And even though I "gimped" myself by being a range dominator, I do do a decent amount of damage and get more than my fair share of kills in a game. I've also developed a reputation of being a pretty good puller even with Corruptors on the team (don't get me into that subject about Corruptors who refuse to pull) with a Combination of Smoke and Fire Blast.
Now from my experience and from what other players from PUGS have said about my Fire/Fire Dom they would say I do contribute to both large and small teams. But I do understand there are people out there who's experience with Dominators are not the same as mine due to a variety of reasons such as Power Selection and Playstyle.
PS: And I know someone will bring this up about what about when you team and there is an AVs/Purple Triangles and I will agree that there is a problem with Dominators in those situations. But that doesn't take away the fact that I do contribute my fair share on the way there to the mission. -
I think someone did a Mag Hold table that shows this. I believe it was 3 Dominators stacking their holds but I could be mistaken.

SO, you like other people are looking to do damage. You believe that if you are doing high damage or have a lot of numbers over the heads of your enemies you are pulling your weight. You like others want to "pull your weight" by doing High Damage, while on a Medium Damage AT. You obviously believe that if you are not doing a boatload of damage or defending the team with heals/debuffs then you are not contributing. All of this stuff is fine, but for you, like many other people. . Dominators are not for you.
Big Damage, Big Control, Big AoE, Big Heal, Big Debuff, Big Buff. . .
This is all showing that there is nothing wrong with the AT, This is showing what you and many other people equate with making a difference. Perhaps that Answer to the question "Do dominators suck like people say they do?" - Is actually NO . Except to people who have Bi-Chromatic vision where they only see in two colours. . . Orange and Green. Damage and Heals.
[/ QUOTE ]
See I like doing Damage that's why I went with Fire/Fire. I also usually pull my weight on teams (except when I'm chatting to the SG - but that's a whole different matter) but I do think Dominators need to have more of an impact on teams. I think the solution that will solve most people complaints about Dominators is easy. Either give Dominators Controller Level Hold (this I prefer because Control is our Primary) or increase our Damage so that it's equal to Corruptors. IMO I think we do need a boost in one or the other but not both.
I won't mention the Purple Triangle bit eitherbut I think that is something that most of us can agree on that is a major issue.

Part of the reason why respec out HF
-
[ QUOTE ]
I just don't understand the whole issue. A) Why they would make the Dominators so dependent on teams early (pre-SO) yet not really that helpful to teams pre-SO...haven't we already seen that with controllers pre containment?
B) Why the Devs didn't 'Smoke Test' the development of Dominators thru all three levels of play (Pre SO/SO/fighting AVs) so they didn't get this whole drama festfixed before it rolled out of Beta smelling so badly
If you don't want to give them more control, you give them more damage.
[/ QUOTE ]
For me, I think the "fix" is really simple. You either A) Give Dominators the same amount of Control as Controllers (raise from 80% to 100%) or B) you increase Dominators attack side so that it is equal to that of a Corruptor. IMO if you do either one of those two things it will eliminate a lot of the gripes you have about Dominators.
After that the only other thing that needs to be fixed is the Purple Triangle issue. While I'm opposed to Perm-Held people, I think Dominators should be able to break Purple Triangles and have their hold duration reduced by around 80-90% and the accuracy to hit is reduced by 50%. -
[ QUOTE ]
,,and LOTS of people agreed that Pre-32 Controllers were solo-able prior to containment.
[/ QUOTE ]
Hmm I must have been doing something wrong because my Ice/Storm Controller couldn't solo worth a lick until 32 when I got Jack andreally didn't become a soloing machine until 33 when I got Jack slotted.
I must have had Gale slotted wrong -
[ QUOTE ]
Illusion/Kinetics, Illusion/Rad Fire/Rad and Fire/Kinetics
these are the heroes of AoE control and damage on the Controller side
Cand Mind/Fire Fire/Fire or any other dominator set match them for damage or control? (and don't get started on Epics, please)
[/ QUOTE ]
A Fire/Fire post pets is about equal to Illusion/Rad, and Fire/Rad. You throw in the Epics/Patron Pools than I'll give it to the controllers because Dominators really got shafted on the PPP.
An Illusion/Kin & Fire/Kin is far better off than a Fire/Fire Dom because everyone knows that those combos are way overpower compared to not only to Dominators but to almost every other AT in both COV & COH especially in later levels when you add in Epic Pools. The only thing that comes close will be a Thugs/Dark MM. -
I've been on plenty of crossover teams in the Pocket D missions to know that Brutes can Tank just as well as a Tanker and when needed so can Scrappers.
-
[ QUOTE ]
If side swithing was allowed a dom would never see a team again.
[/ QUOTE ]
If side switching was allowed, several ATs would never see a Team again not just Doms.
Why take a Tanker when a Brute can do just as good of a job takning and do good damage on top of that.
Why take a one hit Stalker when you can have a Scrapper that can work multiple targets and tank too instead?
Looking for Heals/Buffs, why take Corruptor when you can have a Defender?
Want Damage, why take a Corruptor when you can have a Blaster or a MM.
If we are going to pick and choose, looks like a couple ATs will be looking for teams or maybe all the Tankers, Corruptors, Dominators, and Stalkers can all team up and be on their own team -
[ QUOTE ]
Not only does the dom have to not be an idiot, they have to be awesome.
[/ QUOTE ]
I would say they have to be capable. Granted you have less wiggle room than the other ATs but you don't have to be Mr. Uber Gamer to do a decent job as Dominator and to be contribute to the team.
[ QUOTE ]
An average MM or an Average brute does a pretty good job.
[/ QUOTE ]
Brute I will give. IMO of all the AT's Brutes are the "Simplest" of the 5 Ats. MM is a whole other matter, I've been on far too many teams with a MM who loses control of their Pets and aggros a whole bunch of groups that causes the whole team to be wiped out.
[ QUOTE ]
Corruptors usually have to be a bit on their toes same with stalkers.
[/ QUOTE ]
Just the same as a Dominator. You have to be on your toes.
[ QUOTE ]
Dominators have to be downright great to be as good as the average MM.
[/ QUOTE ]
Matter of experience. The average MM I've seen too often loses control of their pets (this coming from a Fire/Fire Dom with Rapid Monkeys Of DOOM) and takes way to long to Buff up their pets and sometimes gets upset when you move on without them. I've asked some of these MM if they thought about creating a Bind for their pets and I get asked "what's a Bind?"...)
[ QUOTE ]
Id rather take my chances with the MM's and brutes, since in all honestly the great majority of players are average.
[/ QUOTE ]
Brute I will give you but MM... I guess my experiece has been different than yours. -
[ QUOTE ]
To be entirely honest, I don't care what you're happy with. It's mathematically unfair to Dominators, and that's all there is to it; imbalances aren't justified by individuals not minding them, and this is a mathematically obvious imbalance.
[/ QUOTE ]
I think a simple fix would be to allow Dominators to be able to hold AVs when they have Triangles up. Maybe the duration of hold time when triangles are up is cut in half or to a quarter to prevent permahold. -
[ QUOTE ]
I for one would never trust another player to be that good. I assume they are going to mess it up. From talking to other players many of them feel the same way, its not worth taking a chance on inviting a dom to the team.
[/ QUOTE ]
You must not do a lot of PUGs then. I've been on teams with Brutes who take Stealth, Corruptors who won't heal or Debuff, MM who take 5+ minutes to set up all their pets and have to do it before every fight, and Stalkers who refuse to AS the Boss at the end of the mission. You never know what you get when you send that team invite out to someone you never played with before regardless of AT. -
[ QUOTE ]
Do dominators suck?
[/ QUOTE ]
Depends upon who you ask. Some people (like myself) don't think Doms suck and have been able to play a Dominator extremely successfully and do get a lot team invites.
[ QUOTE ]
Are they fun?
[/ QUOTE ]
Again, this depends upon who you ask. Me I have lots of fun with my Dominator. I tried out a Brute, MM, and Corruptor when COV launched before I tried out a Dominator. Now my Dominator is my main and I have more fun with him than the other ATs.
As I like to say not all ATs are made for everyone and what I don't get is someone who spends all this time leveling a Toon and just gripe and complain about it all the way when there are 4 other ATs that might fit them better.
[ QUOTE ]
Why do people say they arent good?
[/ QUOTE ]
Because Dominators do have holes. With a combination of both Low Damage and Low HP and Holds that are about 80% of those are controllers, some people find that to be problem. Others of us have been able to overcoming those shortcomings and play a Dominator successful. The 1 MAJOR problem with Dominators IMO are AV fights with the Purple Triangles up. It is near impossible to hold an AV when the Triangles are up.
IMO several of these issues can be easily fixed. Either give us holds that Equal Controllers or Increase the Damage equal to or close to that of Corruptors. On the AV issue, IMO a Dominator should have a far greater chance of holding an AV when the purple triangles are up and all other ATs have zero. Maybe our accuracy is cut in half or the hold duration is cut in half when the AV has Purple Triangles ups. I'm totally against Permheld but I think Dominators needs a better than average chance of holding an AV.
I think just making some simple tweaks will resolve a majority of the issues with Dominators. -
Awsome job! I've team with someone of you before and it couldn't have happen to a better group of people.
Again Awsome Job on taking down Statesman!
