In theory, it directs you towards your appropriate geography based on your IP. This can be awkward if you're in the EU and want to shop at the US store. If so, you can manually choose the correct geo at the top.

Quote:Billboards..hmm....Speaking of which, the current in-game ad system has been out of use for some time. Are there any plans to re-use it? Sorry if this question has already been asked.
Also, I've always been perplexed as to why the Hero Cons haven't been tapped for media coverage by the several MMO / gaming online magazines out there, Like TTH or MMORPG.com, or even G4.
Herocon....hmm... -
The flood of questions is, unfortunately, overwhelming me.
A lot of great questions, and some good ideas I'll look into.
However, you guys have a lot of questions I simply cannot answer. Not because I don't like you, but because it's not something I know enough about. Unfortunately, I wasn't on this side of the War Wall in 2004. It's not what you want to hear, but I don't want to lie to you or give you false hopes.
I don't mean to ignore questions but.....I can either tell you "I don't know, ask someone else" or answer the questions you know I can help with.
So I'm going with #2. -
Quote:Don't you like getting neat things for showing up to cons? We like giving out neat things. They wouldn't be as neat if they were easy to get. Also, give us the opportunity. You know how? STUFF. We can't buy anything that isn't digital from the store--I'm talking simple crap, like the stuff you already sell at Cons. And update the front page of the website--you know it doesn't even have GR for sale?
As for your other question....
I see a big 'GET IT NOW' button on the main page.
And the expansion is available for pre-purchase at the NCsoft store. -

Quote:I can't get into specifics, but I wouldn't be surprised if you start seeing a LOT more Going Rogue over the next few months. Will we be seeing a big rampup of advertising et cetera for Going Rogue? It's getting pretty close.
It kinda bothers me that I play this great game and it's been around longer than WoW (I think) and yet nobody has ever heard of it except people who already play it. Maybe it's because I am Canadian and live in a remote community that I don't see anything? Gonna feel pretty silly if a huge dogpile of people comes in with cellphone pics of CoX billboards on their subway or something.
And if you can convince a whole bunch of people to come in with cellphone pics of CoX billboards, I'll be the first to make that my top priority. I wonder if there are any conventions coming up.....
As for being Canadian, I understand your plight. Convincing people to watch Due South was nuts. "Yes, it's Canadian, but it's GOOD." And I can't believe they cancelled Power Play in the US after 5 episodes.....
Quote:Finally, loosen the gag on the other rednames so they can let slip some more information for us
I have tears in my eyes....
There are only two rednames that fear me. Sorry to shatter the myth. -
Quote:I'll be honest. I love reading posts where folks think War Witch or Positron cower before me.#post 410. Yes she admits she is vague, but is it because marketing said so?
Do you honestly think I can rein in War Witch? She's awesome. I wear a button-down t-shirt. There is no comparison. -
I do think TV ads are neat.
But I would be curious as to how much it cost to get Mr. T out there, and how many customers he brought in.
I do know that Mohawk grenade drove me nuts.
There are things we can do, and things that would be pretty challenging to do. We'll do whatever makes sense, but that's where you guys come in. The more you tell us what you're thinking (in well-thought out details), the better we can work with you.
Oh wow. I just realized...a redname just posted in my thread!! -
Quote:In-game advertising is tricky. For every player who thinks it's cool, I'd bet there's a player who feels like it breaks the immersion for them. Even targeted advertising can be tricky. I have a friend who plays CoH who'd much rather see diaper ads vs computer ads. Just not interested in tech.I'm totally fine with it my self. More monies for the game is good.
Though I would limit content to...geeky/gamer/computer stuff. It wouldn't bother me to see a diaper add, it would seem a but silly to me though.
Things like Thinkgeek.com, newegg.com, new toy or comic products.
Try to tie in specials for CoX players that respond to the adds.
If we ever did it, we would make sure it works for everyone. I don't think any of you would like to see something haphazard, no matter how cool it could be. -
Quote:"This Task Force is brought to you buy Zipee(R) Diapers."TV ads are pretty expensive, and unlike print ads.. don't stay out there very
long after they've been executed.
I like in game advertising too but on billboards and incorporated in game. It's
awesome cause it actually puts things in reality while getting funds for the game.
*Sigh* I hate talking seriously.
"Uberburger(R)'s Delight - 3 set IO healing set. Increases your size and gives you $5 off lunch."
"Reichmans is unstoppable.....unless you have some Zing(R) deodrant. It knocks out all nasty odors, even from alternate dimensions! Go to the abandoned warehouse and click on all 30 glowies until you find it"
Would those be okay? -
Quote:Not if it promised to kill the crab spiders you may have picked up from that one night trip to the Rogue Isles...
Maybe.
The great thing about this game is you guys. You're more active, informed and passionate than any other MMO community I've ever met.
If you really want something, let us know and we'll do our best to make it happen.
That doesn't mean send 18,293 e-mails to Positron.
Billboards...hmm... -
Quote:Somtimes PST, somtimes EST.Hi-ya Peb!
I won't welcome you in because clearly you've been here awhile. Out of rampant curiosity, are you CST or PST?
Anyway, I'd like to point you back to what D_R said. While most of us are pretty good at telling our immediate circle about this game, we'd really, really like to see it out and about in more places.
TV ads, Web ads, print ads might even work. Heck, go crazy and get a billboard or something. This is the biggest and best superhero game on the market and it would be nice to not get blank looks from game store clerks when we talk about it.
Thanks!
I think it'd be pretty neat to see CoX everywhere you go, until it starts getting creepy.
However, we do need to balance things out.
For example, Superbowl ads. I think most would agree those are memorable, but does it always mean new sales? The City of Heroes blimp may be cool, though.
Instead of going nuts, I'd much rather we get as many new prospective customers as possible with planned, focused campaigns. -
Quote:This is great. No one on this conference call knows I'm forum trolling.Yes. In-game advertising means more monies for the game, means more shineys in da future!!
Oh, and welcome to the forums!!
Wouldn't there be concerns of tackiness if you started seeing Billboards advertising shampoo?
PS - Did you notice I ignored the bacon question? -
Quote:So, do you think if we did more ads in comic books, or had TV commercials, it would be a a lot of bang for the bucks?I'll bite.
Are there any particular advertising venues you guys (erm, or is it just you?) plan on targeting in the near future?
There were ads in comic books during the initial release of the game, and I think around the release of City of Villains, but we haven't seen much of anything since. Will there be any more ads put in comics for Going Rogue? And on that note, why not, y'know, continuously advertise in comics?
And what about an actual TV commercial? Those "I'm a hero! I'm a villain!" skits seemed like a good start even if they needed to be trimmed down to fit the available time.
In other words, do you think will we get a lot of new subscribers that way? -

Quote:I thought so, too. However, I'm afraid we'd end up like Chairface Chippendale and just end up getting the first two letters engraved.Hi. Do you have any thoughts you can share about getting more players to join an a 6 year old MMO? Quite a challenge there.
I was thinking we could rig up a laser to engrave the CoX web addy on the moon.
That would be awkward.
As for how to get players to join. I have some ideas, but I'd rather hear yours.
I will say that give them lots of money is not a viable option. -

Hello everybody,
I am the silent Black Pebble, otherwise known as the new North Americanbrand manager for City of Heroes.
Ive been playing City of Heroes since 2004. I remember when my Fire/Rad controller had 12 fire imps. I remember how cool it was to get the chance to meet Positron on the test server, so I could finally whine about how much I hated Electric Manipulation on my Energy Blaster. One of my favorite memories was the first time I got to see the CoT temple map, which was the most breath-taking instance I had ever seen.
Sometimes, I would log in just to fly all the way to the top of the invisible skyline, then drop, and try to turn on fly before I splatted. Ive played a lot of other MMOs, but none of them have ever given me the same thrill that flying in CoH has. And nothing is better at making you feel overpowered than clicking Nova and seeing 20 mobs lying at your feet. No other game has managed to capture that feeling of freedom, power or uniqueness.
Its been almost six years, and the game still inspires the same sense of excitement in me.
There is still one adventure left for me and it would be to face my most fearsome nemesis all of you.
Some of you may already have painted an image of me in your minds. I can reassure you that I do not have a cat (I am allergic to them), I do not wear suits to work, and although I could lose a few pounds, I am in pretty good shape.
My hope is that by getting a red name on the board, I can show you that I am a fan and I will listen to you. Perhaps we can even have some interesting, new discussions.
I cannot promise you my undivided attention sadly, as I have many diabolical marketing schemes to inflict on the teeming masses. However, I will do my best to listen to all of you, and answer what questions I can. And although you may not see my direct hand in things, you will soon see the fruits of my devious plans very, very soon.
As a heads up, if you ask me questions about powers, art, distribution, retail, stories, billing, Latin, sales, bugs, dairy products, accounting, singing, costumes, anything that happened from 2004-2009, conventions, PvP, design, or algebra, not only will I not be able to answer them, but Ill feel pretty bad about myself. I can only answer questions that directly involve my job.
So what do I do? Long story short, I try my best to make sure that everyone knows what a great game City of Heroes/Villains is and that we never forget that our most important part of our game is you the players. I dont program, I dont draw and I dont write great stories. You already know all of those people. I kind of do everything else. The one thing I can promise you is that I will do my best to earn your respect.
That is all I have for now.
See you again soon,
- Guy without a cool signature, avatar or costume.
