While a comptency might not be socially desireable in one situation it can be invaluable in another.

Take for example lying (seeing as how it has been mentioned). Someone who excels at lying is generally seen as "bad", but put them into hostage negotiation and their ability to lie suddenly becomes a valuable asset.

There are no competencies that can't be pushed around the morality meter, but that of course makes the presumption that your morality is the right basis to follow.

Of course, picking those two examples out of the group of all possible influential persons is a strong indicator that you were trying to connote a deeper comparison.
