Three quick things.
1. The guide listed for basic game play by Map_severed should be Changed to Tog, or _Tog_.
2. It's actually pretty much current through I7 now, but I'm having some trouble with the newest version. Hopefully, it will be current through I8, with better navigation, and a far less annoying "bookshelf" page, just in time for the release of I9, which will make it far out of date again because inventions is really gonna mess things up for it
3. Cool avatar, Mantid.
[/ QUOTE ]
Got it updated, Tog.
May I offer a suggestion for your site? When I first visited it, I didn't realize I had to click on a book twice in order to get into the meat of the site. After clicking on a book once for a description of its contents, you may want to add to the initial text something like, "click on this book again in order to..." -

2) Can we change the urls to relative so that they don't force us onto the City of Villains boards? If you can't do than then please change them to City of Heroes instead. Most people use the heroes style and the villain colour combination would fail the "accessibility" tests we put our web sites through.
[/ QUOTE ]
I think relative urls of cityofheroes v. cityofvillains are only generated by the board for the listing of threads in the forum menus. Once any of us put a link in a thread, we have to choose heroes or villains and that link is hard coded.
However, if you go to My Home / Edit Display Preferences / Which style sheet... and choose City of Heroes (rather than Default), then you'll always get the blue background (the border might still be maroon). You may have to exit your browser and come back in for it to work. You may also have to login to both the heroes and villains versions of the boards. And you may have to clear cookies in order to do that (yeah, stupid boards). But once I did all that, I get the maroon background even for urls that have cityofheroes in them (I prefer the villains skin myself). So, it should work the other way around.
Hope that helps.
Now, a question regarding 'accessibility'... are you saying that the heroes' skin passes accessibility tests with its green links on a blue background? Isn't green-blue color blindness rather common? -
With regard to ordering by Issue release:
I'll try to switch up a few of them when they address the same topic and put the more recent first, but there aren't that many guides which address exactly the same topic. E.g., the 'best fly bind ever' guide is technically older than than 'the second best fly bind' guide, but thematically, it should still go first. Also, even though the 'best fly bind ever' guide has an early issue date attached to it, it has a lot of more recent additions. The following discussion and follow-ups in a guide's thread may make it a lot more current than the issue date would have you believe. Also, a guide may have an early date, but if the mechanics it discusses haven't changed in the game... then it's up to date; meanwhile, a guide may have a more recent date, but if the mechanics it discusses were changed even more recently... then it's out of date.
All this to say... issue dates are not a very reliable way to know if a guide is out of date or not; therefore, using issue dates as a primary sorting factor is probably not the best way to sort the guides. -
[ QUOTE ]
I've actually got a third version of my screenshot/demo guide. However, that 'guide' is just a link to my online guide. You're welcome to link to either or both.
[/ QUOTE ]
Darn, I missed one! You're just so prolific.
Anyway, I updated the guide (still got editing rights) with V3. I'm leaving both threads up since the discussion of your guide is as enlightening as the guide itself. -
And... it's finally done.
This guide contains everything the old Guide to Guide had (thanks again to milk_weasel for updating that). But the old Guide to Guide included only those guides which Cuppa put in and those that were posted to the thread. There were lots and lots and lots of other guides that were in the forums but never included in the Guide to Guides or posted to its thread.
So, I went back through all the threads in the forum. That's two and a half years and over 4,300 threads. I can't guarantee I got everything that should be included. Luckily for me, the vast majority of threads consisted of AT guides which were outside the purview of this general Guide to Guides.
I did use my judgment in not including certain guides which were only a little tips, terribly incomplete, or hopelessly outdated. If the authors of those guides are put out by that, they are free to update their guides and post them here as they were asked to do.
Any feedback would be welcome on the structure, or grammar, or typos, or whatever.
Certainly, many of these guides that did make it could use a good updating and replace the old ones altogether. Maybe even combining similar ones. If the author didn't respond to the call to update them... then their loss. Feel free to tackle them.

I. [u]AN INTRODUCTION AND GUIDE TO GUIDE TO GUIDES[u]
Updated: Jan 30, 2007
PLAYER GUIDE FORUM & THE GUIDE TO GUIDES THREAD
This *forum*, [u]Player Guides[u], is a place for players to share their guides with other players. Unlike the other forums on this bulletin board, the threads in this forum do not automatically 'scroll off' or get 'aged out.' They stay until the time comes when the forum moderator decides they should go. Right now, threads go all the way back to May of 2004.
If you make a player guide, we ask that you place a copy of it in this forum in a separate thread, even if you are hosting another copy off site. This will help to reduce broken or stale links.
This *thread*, [u]Guide to Guides[u], is an effort to organize all the player guides. This thread contains links to the guides that are not specifically written for an Archetype (AT) or powerset. There are guides for each of the ATs in their own forum (a link to the AT guides can be found in this thread below). The AT guides are stored in this forum, but the guides to AT guides are in their AT forums (in other words, the Guide to Scrapper Guides thread can be found in the Scrapper forum, but the the actual Scrapper guides are stored here in the Player Guides forum).
WRITING GUIDES
If you have written a guide, please let us know by posting a link to it at the bottom of this thread. If you don't know how to do that, don't worry, this thread has links to guides on how to write guides and how to make links in the forums. See how handy this Guide to Guides is?
If you write a guide for a particular AT, then post a link to it both in this thread and the appropriate Guide to AT Guide thread (for example, if you write a Scrapper guide, post a link both here and in the Guide to Scrapper Guides thread in the Scrapper Forum).
If you have created a guide, then please do not post the guide itself in this thread. Start a brand new thread in this forum for your brand new guide.
When you title your guide, it's helpful to be as clear as possible what the guide is about. Fun names like "Guide to BOOM!" don't really explain what that guide is about. Instead, something like "Guide to BOOM: How to make exploding objects work for you" is clearer. If your guide is dependent on certain game mechanics that might change over time, it is also helpful to indicate what Issue your guide was written for. For example, putting [I7] in the title lets us know about when your guide was written (during Issue 7's release) and for what game mechanics it applies.
FINDING GUIDES
Please do not make a request a for a guide or ask if a particular guide exists in this forum. We don't want to archive all those extraneous threads. Instead, please post your question or requests in the forums of 'Suggestions and Ideas,' 'Player Questions,' or one of the General Discussion Forums.
Tip: Use your browsers search function (usually Edit / Find...) to search this thread for the guide you're looking for. If that doesn't help find a guide you're looking for, try the Search function of the forum (there's a guide linked in this thread that tells you how to use the Search function!).
READER BEWARE
It is important to remember that almost all of these guides are written by players for players. They are not official guides from Cryptic (the game developer) or NCSoft (the game publisher and owner of the forums).
Some guides contain straightforward factual information. Much is easily verified or has been confirmed by the Developers. Some information is simply the best guess of the player because we don't know all the secrets of the game mechanics. There's a reason the company is called Cryptic. So, use the information at your own risk.
Some guides are more advice, suggestion, strategy, and opinion. As such, feel free to disagree. People are attempting to be helpful, but you don't have to take their advice. Play any way you like as long as you don't break the EULA (there's a link to that below).
Some guides get better with feedback, but only if it's constructive feedback (see the guides on forum etiquette). If you wish to discuss the content of a guide, please do so in that guide's thread, not in this thread.
Also keep in mind that some of these guides might have become outdated. That's why we include an issue number with most of them. Some guides are timeless (like good etiquette). Some become stale as game mechanics change, for example, a recent buff to the strength of Archvillains might make many of the older guides to defeating Archvillains no longer helpful. Here are the dates for the issue releases so you have an idea of how old a guide might be....
I1: 6/30/04
I2: 9/17/04
I3: 1/5/05
I4: 5/5/05
I5: 9/1/05
I6: 10/28/05
I7: 6/6/06
I8: 11/28/06
UPDATING GUIDES
We strongly encourage authors of guides to revisit their guides to keep them fresh and updated. A recent call went out at the beginning of 2007 for everyone to update their guides.
If you see a guide (or a group of guides) that have become outdated and stale and the author hasn't updated them recently, well, you're certainly welcome to update it yourself if you'd like. Just simply cut and paste the old guide into your new guide and update it. Then it would be nice if you linked back to the original guide with a thanks to that author's initial work. There, everyone benefits.
Speaking of which, thanks to milk_weasel for updating the previous Guide to Guide threads which can be found here. That was a big help for this guide.

Actally the red background is gone now for villain side. it only has a red border so 244A7A will work great for either side.

Huh? I have a red background. The red background is not gone. You sure you're looking at boards.cityofvillains.com?
[/ QUOTE ]
yep only difference for me is the top where it has all the villains, and the borders where it is red. I'm in Villain a lot of the time, and the background is not different anymore like it used to be.
Makes me wonder if I can change colors now.

Yes, you can. Go to My Home / Display Preference / Which style (skin)... -

If it is a click and you don't want it to root, then you're asking for another exception to the rule.
[/ QUOTE ]
So?
Really, what would be the problem if IR's description said "unlike other click powers, this power does not root you in place while activiting."
[/ QUOTE ]
Well, it seems to fly in the face of the idea of standardizing buffs. If that click self+ally power becomes unrooted, then why not all the other click self+ally powers? There needs to be a compelling reason to except it from the rule.
Which leads me to question why click self+ally powers should root except for healing auras? The healing aura is an exception to the rule. So, in this regard, I'm on your side in questioning the new policy for click self+ally powers. If they want standardization, then standardize. If they start making exception for the team heal buff, then why stop there? Make IR and Group Invisibility and Recovery Aura and Accelerate Metabolism and Vengeance all unrooted, too. If I can heal myself and my teammates while running, why can't I make myself and my teammates invisible while running? -

Another post from the Animation Dept.
[ QUOTE ]
Hey everyone. The changes to toggle power animations and the standardization of what does and doesnt root you should now be up on live. I just wanted to clear up any confusion about some other changes to click powers that also happened at this time. The only intended changes to rooting were supposed to be for toggle powers at this time. Were in the process of standardizing click powers to follow their own set of rules, but theyre not going to be slightly different than the rules for toggles.
Right now, our intent is to use these rules for click powers:
1. AOE Heals will not root
2. Self Buffs will not root
3. Self Heals will not root
4. Everything else will.
You may have noticed some click powers that used to root you and now dont. These powers snuck their way into the wrong build (see what happens when we dont root them), and most of these will change back in the next build that makes it to live. Consider this an official heads up.
Again, sorry for the confusion this has caused. Well get it all sorted out shortly and we thank you for your patience and understanding.
[/ QUOTE ]
[/ QUOTE ]
Out of curiosity just how far does this new balance idea extend? It is clear that rooting times for powers mentioned above were not standardized for balance, no does it appear animation times were/are. The rooting portion seems to be on the fix boards, atleast for the powers you mentioned. However:
1) Can we expect such a fix to trickle down into the attacks also?
2) Is there any thing in on the plate that would suggest the rooting fixes will continue and we will see some sort of animation standard for balance issues?
[/ QUOTE ]
It is my understanding that when it comes to attack powers, animation time has been included in the balancing of the power. If a power takes a long time to animate, e.g., then they've already compensated for it in some other way by reducing its END, or Recharge, or increasing its ACC or Damage. So, for attack powers, it's a little bit more difficult to standardize animation time since many other factors come into play.
That's not to say animation times haven't been tweaked in the past or that they won't revisit animations of attack powers and rebalance them in the future. If you think certain powers have inordinately long attack animations, the best thing to do is to find some other attack that has similar END, Recharge, ACC, and Damage but a shorter animation and complain that the one with the longer animation time is unbalanced. Right now, the onus is on the players to make the case that the animation is too long and unbalancing and to do so with numbers, not simply saying 'I wanna shorter animation just because.'
