Quote:Except for all the times Cap has gone out and kicked mass amounts of butt w/o the shield. Scrapper all the way. That nearly indestructible shield tells me otherwise.
I'm reminded of a moment in the comics (forget the issue) where he puts spider-man behind him and ducks behind the shield while the Hulk pounds away at it.
To me Captain America and that shield are inseparable as a comic character.
I say Tank all the way.
Shoot, the movie was like one scrapper challenge after another. He was constantly told "You can't do that." He always responded "Watch me." That is the scrapper attitude all the way, for prof go look at the scrapper boards. Cap also attacks with that shield as much or more than he defends with it, again very scrapperish. I would say StJ/Shield all the way. -

Quote:No way, Cap is a scrapper through and through.I've always imagined Captain America as a tank and Peter Parker's Spider-man as an Archetype not currently in game. Now, if they ever introduce an archetype with a one set (primary or secondary) that is ranged controls and melee attacks, and one defense set (along the lines of Ninjitsu) then that's what Spider-man is.
This thread really went all over the place. The one thing I am sure of at the end is that the AT I love the most, the Scrapper, will most likely not get anything cool and unique.
What I have enjoyed, no matter how heated it has been, is the passion I see for the game. Even after 7 years we care so much for the game and our creations in the game that we fight tooth and nail for them. That is a pretty awesome thing.
I still want my beloved scrapper to get something unique to them, something that they share with no one else. It seems a little unfair that all the other ATs have that, but scrappers don't. It is what it is though. Scrappers are the first to step up in any given situation, I think it is just part of the mentality that goes with playing that AT. After 7 years of playing this game, playing any other AT still pales in comparison to me. I step away for a moment or two, but I always come back to the scrapper. -
Quote:Very true. I think MoG of the time was their craptastic way of trying to get his berserk rage going... it failed as many things did back then.Yeah, but Brutes didn't have claws at the start. Considering how insanely popular Clawsbub is, and especially was when they were creating the ATs, I'd lean hard towards saying he was who they had in mind. Especially since in the old character creator (maybe even still in the current one) selecting the Scrapper AT even made a SNIKT/SLICE-ey kind of sound.
.
We are in the here and now, and what I have seen over the past year has given me new hope for this game. -
Quote:My suggestion of allowing them inherent Superior conditioning, where their max end increases by X every Y level. Would have little to no impact on game balance. That I can see any way. I would say 5 points of end every 10 levels for a max of 25 bonus end. So the level 50 scrapper w/o accolades or IOs would have 125 total end. This much I can almost see. The problem is introducing something unique that will not affect balance. Or, at the very least, take something away first.
Shoot, what do scrappers have left to take away. Everything they had has been copied to all the other melee ATs. -
Quote:First off, I have grown to trust the current powers team. Synapse is by far my favorite dev. If he says he is going to look at it, I would expect something good to come from it. I like him as a dev, and from the interactions I have had with him in game and in PMs he seems like a great person. I know after so long it is hard to have faith, but they did buff regen, and they removed the fear component from burn. They are doing their best to earn our faith.I'm far past trying to convince the devs of anything. They're either fully aware if the problem and don't care about it, or don't have the time/resources to address it. To the latter, five years on, patience is running a little short. To the former, there's no point in trying to even be reasonable.
There's been some talk about looking at Tankers I'm very skeptical given their collective past treatment of the AT. I think that's justified. If you don't, fair enough.
I think wanting the damage cap adjusted and there to stop being a double standard with the melee ATs is very reasonable.
I also want for Tankers to meet the same expectations set by their comic Tanker counterparts as reasonably well as Scrappers meet the expectations set by that short hairy guy with the claws and as Brutes do for the big green guy with the anger issues, without having to pretend being a decoy means you're a powerhouse because some guy played too much DnD designing the game instead of referring to guys like Kirby, Lee or Bruce Timm.
Why those ATs are allowed to, but Tankers have to get the shaft for "balance" that I don't think is really balanced isn't something anyone will ever convince me of.
.
I would say Wolverine is a brute, or was in the early days. Captain America is a good example of a scrapper if you need one, or spider man. I assumed you wanted to stay in marvel. -
Quote:In a way they did. The idea of fury originated on the tanker boards, and was even said by Geko (who I am sure we all remember and love /sarcasm) to be a good idea. Then all of a sudden it turned up on the Brute. So I can see where he coming from.Brutes did not steal Fury. Tankers never had Fury for it to be stolen.
I'm with you that Scrappers don't need a buff, though.
I also think we have moved past saying scrapers need a buff, and more towards scrappers need/want something unique to them. I have been very vocal about what I feel the best path is and why.
If one person sees something then it may be an issue their perception. If multiple people see something, then there may actually be something there. I am not the only person saying scrappers should have something uniquely theirs. I am just the most vocal. I am sick, school is on hold because of it, and I am not physically able to do much. Expect me to be more and more vocal about this issue (and costumes) every chance I get.
I also apologize in advance as the radiation kicks in, I may be more of a jerk than normal. -
-
Quote:It may also seem that way to me because it seems (mater of perception) that they take longer to have a good attack chain, or enough attacks to suit me. Someone with more experience on tanks would have to chime in on leveling while solo.I don't know that for a fact. They might on average, but the offensive difference in Tanker primaries might be higher than the difference between the average tanker and average scrapper, say. If the overlap is high enough, and the overall average difference is not high, the difference may be within the acceptable limits of a game that cannot exactly match the performance of every powerset combination identically.
Depending on the server though, 1-20 on a DFB with an XP boost is trivial. -
I am an offensively minded player, which is why my highest tank is I think lvl 35 and bores the crap out of me. I choose between brutes and scrappers based on concept alone in most cases. StJ/Invul made more sense to me as a scraper for the reasons I listed above a cool head, and training to win the day.
My TW/EA is a Brute because he is a Werewolf, and they are all about fury and rage.
It is a good thing that now stalkers are in the mix, but I still see them as assassins, and I have very few concepts that fit with that because I like being a hero.
I agree with what you post Arcanaville. The question to me though is do the other melee ATs level faster than the Tank solo, and the answer is yes (based on my experience alone). That is assuming we are using leveling as the thing we are comparing.
I play on Virtue, so concept and back story weigh very heavily into my AT choice. That however is not what the OP was about. Scrapper still do not have anything unique to them, and I think the should.
Also, Johnny you should visit the scrapper boards more. They (we) notice EVERYTHING when it comes to their toons. Someone would notice the orange numbers are lower. -
-
Quote:To be to be fair to Johnny, and because you always give good answers, where do Brutes fit in the balance scheme of things. They do seem to stomp all over Tanks (and scrappers) to a degree. To repeat: Tankers did not pay anything for Bruising. Reducing Scrapper damage modifiers and replacing it with a resistance debuff has to be justified. I only said the change would be an even swap given your stated assumptions about it. By mine, it would be a nerf with no justification.
Attempting to portray it as an equivalent situation doesn't make it one. We can talk about certain differences as being "trades" from a mathematical perspective for simplification purposes, but from a game design perspective Tankers trade nothing for Bruising. Bruising is itself a free damage buff that has no justification for its existence except to make Tankers that want more damage than the archetype can quantitatively justify happier. Its only problematic for people who believe their own personal concepts for how things should work supersede game balance requirements.
I would rather see the Tank brought up than the Brute nerfed, but the situation does seem to be a bit unbalanced.
What I really hope comes from this thread is that the Devs see that we the players see some problems within the melee ATs. The brutes OP, the Tanks need of a buff, and the Scrapper's lack of uniqueness. Really stalkers are perfect to me at this point. Scrappers are not broken, just something unique would be nice. -
Quote:Works for me, makes me think of Superman fighting Darkseid at the end of JLA season one I think it was.I've known many who consider their Brute AT character to basically be a Scrapper, except Fury is a game mechanic.
So they'll have the Spider-Man type hero/villian, but use the Brute AT because they like the Brute ATs game mechanics better.
While I was never one for adding taunt auras to existing Scrapper secondaries after they were added to ported versions for Brutes, due to legacy issues (there are just players out there who don't want the aggro aura), I don't discount it's usefulness at all.
I have a character I want to roll as a scrapper but wish I had an aggro aura so enemies actually stay around. It's a useful mechanic.
So basically...I wouldn't let game/AT mechanics dictate the type of character concept a person is rolling.
But going by Brute, I think saying a SS/INV Brute is Superman, and that Fury represents him using more of his strength as the fight goes on. Starts out holding back, notusing his full strength as he's pulling his punches to start, and as the fight goes on it becomes obvious that the enemy can take it, so the punches get harder and harder untill...BOOM!
I think I will still stick by my suggested buff for scrappers in a growing end total increase. I still feel like it would have the least impact on game balance, and give scrappers something uniquely theirs. -
-
Quote:Dude, you just can't seem to get it. You think we are all against what you are saying about tanks, but we aren't really. The mechanic that Brutes use for furry was taken right off the tanker boards. I don't have an issue with tanks doing more damage than they do now, but even you have to admit that having a character with more HPs, Higher DR cap, AND higher damage than any other character would be broken. Tankers need a buff, no arguing that. The last buff they got didn't do enough to put them even with or above brutes. Again man, it is not what you are saying, but how you say it. You want what I have been accused of wanting for scrappers (which I have made clear was not true) you want them to be the best AT. If that is not what you want, than I and most of the other posters are really reading something wrong.Superman disagrees.
So does Statesman.
FYI, Darrin Wade didn't steal Statesman's powers so he could stand there and act as a distraction while someone else did the real fighting.
.
Wade stole Statesman's power because he was an incarnate, the strongest incarnate.
Sam, that is how the devs have described the scrapper ATs in the past. It also fits with the games description of scrappers the best as I read it. -
I really could see tanks getting a small boost in damage, but I think it would be better (man I HATE nerfs) if brutes Resistance Cap were lowered to 85% and they lost punchvoke.
I agree that tanks should have a defined role, one that they are better at than anyone else.
Also, Devs take note as to how passionate the players of these ATs are. This discussion is the way it is because we love our melee AT's. -
Quote:Love the question! But what makes a Scrapper more fit than a Brute, who actually needs the fitness more thanks to the nature of the Fury mechanic? I'm not saying this to challenge you, by the way. I'm genuinely interested in an explanation.
In my mind Scrappers are like Batman, Bruce Lee, Iron Fist, Night Wing, or a host of other characters/people who are that good because they train that hard. The fighter that wins is the one who is in better condition than the other. Scrappers represent that conditioning to me.
Brutes are like the Hulk, they get mad they hit harder.
Stalkers are assassins that strike from the darkness and never really need the conditioning for a sustained fight, after all the target is dead. Cassidy Cane Bat Girl is what stalkers are like now. She is awesome in a fight, but she is not Batman or Nightwing.
Tanks really are like Superman, not because the hit hard, but because it doesn't matter how hard you hit them.
Scrappers are those who fight the way they do because of training and dedication. They are the College Wrestle who runs an extra 10 miles a day. They are the martial artist who stays for the extra sparing sessions. They are the energizer bunnies of the ATs. They just keep going and going and going. Spiderman is still going long after the Hulk is breathing hard, Batman has the physical and mental fortitude to never stop.
It also fits with how people say they like to play them. It fits for them over the other melee ATs precisely because the don't need it.
Also, of my 4 kids, 3 are girls. I love the Power Puff girls! To me though, scrappers are more like Kick Buttowski. Also I choose to use characters from Marvel and DC for refrence on purpose. I stepped outside of comics because I know you are not a big comic fan.
Also Ken and Ryu were perfect copies of one another in SF1, in the following versions Ryu had a better Fire Ball, and Ken had the better Dragon Uppercut. Either way it would be hard to argue against the majority of the SF characters being anything other than scrappers. Perhaps Honda and Zangif could be Tanks or Brutes.
Sam, I hope that answered your question. If not I can go on. -
Dude, how do you manage to not get banned on a regular basis?
Why does this discussion have to become so personal?
Several of us have disagreed left and right, w/o taking it personal or throwing personal insults. The last post was really uncalled for.
Edit: This was directed at Johnny, I just didn't want to quote him. -
Quote:Is what it is. Stalkers were not even on the radar, and blasters offered safer damage because they could do it from range. Note earlier where I exceeded the ranged soft cap on my one and only blaster. With that said, Triumph can be a weird place at times, which is why I moved to the much more normal and sane Virtue. With a little disrespect as possible meant to your friends, I think they are downright weird.
If there's anyone my friends worry about on a "master" spot (and for the most part, there's not, as long as we know the player is competent), it would be a Blaster or Stalker.
Let me again petition for a way for scrapes to be able to increase their max end. Shoot, get rid of conserve power, and give scrappers the more reliable Superior Conditioning in their EPP.
Out side of this argument. I would like to show that I am sane by stating that I think Scrappers have a snow ball's chance in hell of getting any kind of buff. As many have said, they just work. I would still like to see them get something that is their own, but I don't think it is likely to happen. As many say "Don't fix what's not broken" I get that, I really do. However I also love Scrappers and would love to see them get something unique.
As this point I would be satisfied if some of the more requested sets were proliferated to scrappers. I am pretty sure that will have to satisfy me, because it is the best I am likely to get.
I still say that a scaling end total buff would be cool, and not game breaking. At most it would allow scrappers to maybe change up their slotting, or not pick a power. -
Quote:I also read the first few, and they still had a bit more than what I would like. The last one I tried to pick up Narcissus in Chains I believe was so bad I couldn't finish it. I have seen less raunchy actual erotica.I heard rumors that the latest few novels in the Anita Blake series aren't as sexed up as the few that came before them. I loved the first 9 books (mostly), book 10 was getting a little too sexy for me and book 11 I didn't even finish. I wanted Anita Blake sword wielding Necromancer with her Vampire/Werewolf love triangle, not Anita Blake sexual party favor of every were<animal> in the tri-state area.
Again, Briggs is great about conveying love w/o the need for really graphic sex. -
Quote:I have these on the shelf upstairs waiting their turn.Mike Resnick "Weird West" novels are fun, if not too historically inaccurate, romps featuring Doc Holiday. They currently consist of The Buntline Special and The Doctor & The Kid.

Quote:I have never been so glad in my life that players have so little control over the game. I have been told for years (by very good friends) that letting a scrapper on a Master run of anything was a pity spot, and I was the only person they would do it for. They never said that about tanks or brutes.I would increase the Tanker damage cap so their damage would to be 25%-30% less than Brutes at their damage cap.
OR I would go for the root of both Tanker and Stalker problems and remove Scrappers and Brutes from the game entirely, leaving the remaining two melee ATs to do their own thing at each end of the spectrum in peace and let the devs go from there. Sure, it would be hugely unpopular with some people. But since I did it, I'd take the heat, and it's no worse than what I get already.
.
Tanks have a role, it is just not the role you like.
Also I agree, Brutes are still OP. their resistance cap should have been lowered to 85% when the fury chances were made. I say that with all but 3 of my 15 lvl 50 toons being scrappers and brutes. -
Quote:I get all of this. I don't want them to be better, but I do want them to have something that is their own that they don't have to share.Where you'll meet the most resistance from other posters is you come off as wanting for Scrappers to be intrinsically "better" than all other ATs like they were for years, and their just being about on par with other ATs isn't enough if they're not better. I can understand the desire for this, and you even admit the unpopularity, but that's simply going to be the bone of contention - a lot of us are really ending our argument at "good enough," and as it stands, Scrappers are good enough. Considering I can't say the same about too many other ATs, changes to Scrappers appear unlikely.
And again, if we're talking about changes, I'd shoot for base stats and nothing more. No powers for free, no taking the perks of one powerset and giving them to all powersets, no mechanics that depend on enemy health and so forth. Up their health or up their damage or up their resistance caps. That's the extent I'd go when it comes to improvements.
Out of all of what you named it still seems like a buff to their end total would have the least imbalance in the game. -
Quote:IIRC Inventions were i8, and the RWZ update with pylons was in i11.
I guess a good question to start with is, how long have scrappers been soloing Pylons, doing the RWZ Challenge, and soloing AVs? If it was since before inventions, then that's it. If you can survive an AV long enough to kill it by yourself, the margin only improves on a team. -
