I kind of feel like he's Jack Kirby. With me, I don't *like* Kirby's art. But I freely acknowledge the huge contribution to the industry that he made. And please: before someone pipes up with "who is Jack Kirby" just go look it up and don't embarrass yourself

How is it possible someone, anyone doesn't like Jack "King" Kirby's art? That really freaks me out...

    ...

Clearly he must be a witch.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    She, first

Me and Jack Kirby go way back. I ran a comic store for 13 years, here in Sunny San Diego - the site of the world's biggest (western, not manga) comic Convention. Where Jack was the guest of honor for many years, and I did get to at least meet him through a crowd one time.

I ... really don't like the 'constructed of square blocks' school of art that he used, but the "kirbyesque" style of 'comic fx bling' will always be some of my favorite stuff. His characters, stories, all kind of fun but ... I just don't like the art. It's like if you don't like a particular kind of pizza, shouldn't make you an outcast in a pizza party, right? Just get half without

Well - me and Jack, though... There's this horrible story. Back when my store was thriving my boss would hold auctions in the stores to get people in and spending money. We had this piece, it was an uncut sheet of trading cards on chromium stuff of the Topps comic venture that Kirby did for them.

No one was bidding on this.
So I, in my infinite wisdom, made the comment, "people, it's Jack Kirby. He's like 75 and has cancer, he's not long for the world. Bid on it!"

.... That was a saturday sale.

He was dead at around 2 in the morning Sunday I believe. So... Yah. I killed Jack Kirby and I've never lived it down. True story. So I try not to mention other people in the industry for fear that the words will come true. :/

Honest and true: ask my friends if you think I'm kiddin. I killed the man. It wasn't because I disliked his art!! nooo! o.o

    *runs away*
  3. Ppppfft who reads those?

I don't think I would have connected them, actually, because ... well, like I said, never heard of the guy until recently. Plus, you know how tiny the print is in that book!? My old eyes! They ache!

So the game has "Gone to the British-es"?!

    [/ QUOTE ]

    nooooooooo!
  5. HEY! I didn't even know there WAS a guy named Robert until about 10 minutes ago

Though what the hell he's doing running around loose in the devs cages I don't know.... I would have assumed - like most of us - that it was RICHARD that would do such things, since he is not the astronaut and instead the game designer... fair?
  6. I can think of some other names, but..... I shall refrain
  7. [ QUOTE ]

Well, if Robert is short for Richard, I guess.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Robert who? Richard Garriot is who we're talking about, here.
  8. [ QUOTE ]
    There are two Garriots.

One is Lord British, he who pwnz noobz in Tabula Rasa.

The other is the NCSoft bossman.

  10. I just hope he keeps his head in TR for a while. Because that one review of it (and him) is soooo dead on lol.

And what does Garriot have to do with COH? Nothing, so... shrug on that one.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Oddly enough back in alpha Garriot was the NCSoft manager overseeing the City of Heroes development by Cryptic. Then he went off to develop TR.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    OH! NOW I remember him!

He was always a cool guy, as I recall. ... I wondered what happened to him

    [/ QUOTE ]

o.o You're .... joking, right? Garriot? Please tell me you're joking... I mean about the not knowing - I didn't realize he was actually still producing games, but I bought pretty much half the Ultima line and all that jazz. That's why it surprised me to learn this. Meh, learn something new every day or something. I think I've learned plenty today. My brain is full.

[*]NCSoft will be relocating the current "City" QA (Quality Assurance) team from the Austin studio to the new NorCal Studio. That's right, their QA gang will be able to stand up from their computer, walk down the hall, and say, "Hey, BackAlleyBrawler" found a bug with an animation you should see." How freakin' efficient is that?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Whoa, whoa. Do you have a source for that? I thought I'd been through all the Dev/Community posts, and I don't remember seeing that.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Well the fact that they all had a pumpkin carving contest in the same building said volumes to me...

My issue is 9: I don't see where Ex mentioned any hint at 'single server' - she replied to my query about servers with "we're getting new hardware". Not "we're getting new hardware and it'll all support one big gigantic megaserver". Sorry on that one, but *eeeent*. nope. New hardware = 11 servers. Down the way? sure, but not while they're investing so much in this. I don't see that at all.

And what does Garriot have to do with COH? Nothing, so... shrug on that one.

Is it just one game now?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Yes. Essentially, that's what they've done today with some of the player-perks we're getting, including the Debt wipe and Prestige things.

Hmm. I just realized that Statesman's assurance that we'd be getting Street Fighting likely no longer holds any water.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Yeah, but you should see the "Fisticuffs" powerset in MUO! ZOMG its teh sweetest!

    [/ QUOTE ]

Aha, perhaps that's what he meant?

    [/ QUOTE ]

I'm guessing it's more like the GIANT SPIDER from Superman's movie...
  16. I have to hope this is a joke, PP, because... they don't get any of that special junk. JUST access to the other game side. Why is that a problem?

I want people with solo accounts to be able to access the stuff they didn't have before. That's a really sweet way of keeping newcomers on board. Getting them to come into bases if they couldn't, bonus.

They never said anything about getting the GVE specifics, the Preorder or Beta goodies, or any of that other extra stuff.
  17. [ QUOTE ]
and there was just no way that Cryptic would keep working on both. I just hope this doesn't spell the end of CoH as we know it.

    [/ QUOTE ]

The same development team is still working on COH. The SAME PEOPLE. Under a new name. *shrug* no doom. Maybe a teensy doom. lowercase doom.
  18. [ QUOTE ]
Is Cryptic doomed ? Why did Cryptic let CoH/V go ?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Because in part, Cryptic is in development of the *competing product* Marvel Universe Online. Makes sense that they no longer have to worry about conflict of interest lawsuits.
  19. [ QUOTE ]
another one for the, you can't please everyone examples?

    looks like.
  20. [ QUOTE ]
Awesome. Sow where are the NEW zones, again?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Well, now that there's a dedicated publisher with the intent to improve this already great game, AND the development team who created that great game on board, I would say "COMING SOON".

Jeez dude. It's a good thing. It's not a bad thing. Just because you didn't get a pony last issue doesn't mean this will doom everything.
  21. [ QUOTE ]

/me Notes with Nervousness that the biggies are all named individually... _except_ States.

    [/ QUOTE ]

He hasn't been on board for a while. It's no biggie.

Sexy Jay, biggie. War Witch, the others, biggies.
  22. Tal, you DO know that they also run Lineage, Lineage II and other games, not just Tabula Rasa and COH?

Right now it looks as though a fine quality Dev team has been relocated under a new roof and is getting their paychecks from a faintly different source.

Nothing else is changing. NC has always been good with COH, it's their *best* product, certainly, if not their most profitable one.

As someone else said, if it had been handed off abruptly to some OTHER publisher, I'd worry my head off. But as it is, NC has *always been with Cryptic's team* and since essentially the team and the publisher are still the same, they have the same relationship.... I 'm not worrying until they start going back on things like ingame ads not in coh, etc. That would be a breech of good taste after having asserted here in no uncertain terms they don't want it.

Consistant good publisher relations have been what's made this game, for some. Don't forget: these forums are NC sponsored. Not Cryptic. so... don't diss NC, they're doing okay and it's the same folks on both ends, just in a new house.

    And EX: QUESTION ===

What about the physical servers? Are they maintained by NC and just going to be where they are, or are there going to be days of moving physical hardware involved? (and at that point could you please chase the mice and dust bunnies out from under them, as they seem to chew the connections sometimes?)

    [/ QUOTE ]

The servers and operations are all still intact and will not be re-localized from their current spots. We are however up for new hardware, so that is full of pure win right there.

    Ex

    [/ QUOTE ]

HURRAH!!! oh man, you just made my day right there. New hardware = love.
  24. [ QUOTE ]
Frankly I feel unsettled that development control being taken away from Cryptic and given to NCSoft. I have yet to see a game where executives sitting in offices have understood what is best for the game compared to the developers who are working with it directly and have experience from their successes and mistakes.

This might be what finally makes me leave the CoX community should the devs/corperation goons not keep to the original vision that Cryptic has laid out for them.

    [/ QUOTE ]

.... Development control, as I believe LIghthouse said in a subsequent post, *is still in the same hands*. They haven't said "and the guy working the mail room in NC's sub-basement will be giving the orders now"...

    And EX: QUESTION ===

What about the physical servers? Are they maintained by NC and just going to be where they are, or are there going to be days of moving physical hardware involved? 25. You know just because Jack's not on the team, doesn't mean his Nerfbat isn't sitting right there on the desk.
